Not sure nostalgia is a factor, I think it's more an aversion to reality, because if they try to watch something more serious (like GoT) they'll get emotions, the bad kind of emotions like angry, saddness, etc. They might also get reminded constantly that the world isn't a fairy tale, that injustice and bad guys exists and most of the time are unpunished. It's a grim reality?, sure, but that doesn't mean that every step you take will be met with a tragedy.
SO, instead of watching news, more serious series, documentaries or something more interesting, they rather watch cartoons and live in a happy colorful place full of justice were the villain always lose. But since these manchildren now have the capacity to come up with really complex bullshit (compared to kids simple minds), they simply try to overthink and build a world of their own, filled with crazy crap that satisfies their shitty behavior and all based on the cartoon they are watching.

TL;DR They watch cartoons because they don't want to face reality, make shit up and live in a bubble.

I agree. I also think there's more to it. The animation industry is probably entering a transition period: From dedicated target demographics to generalized target demographics.

More and more we're seeing broader age audiences consuming products (animations/cartoons) not specifically tailored to them. From an industry perspective, this means that the market is changing as a result of society changing itself, and that producers have to adapt.

Animation, as an artistic medium has the advantage of being easier to "get into" thanks to its graphical diversity. As such, older people getting into cartoons (and viceversa) is nothing new, but never before has it been as constant and as prevalent as it is today thanks to a growing bulk of young adults being unable to cope with personality issues and socialization rituals in a given culture.

To put it in "poetic terms" (Lol) Cartoons are the opium of an emergent group of socially inadequate individuals with difficulty to overcome anxiety and self-esteem traumas.

As such, this phenomenon of people clinging to children's cartoons as their only resource for a meaningful moral guide and environment will not stop in the near future. At the very least it will remain, and in the medium term, it will be the new norm for both, consumers of animation, and producers of animated series.

I dunno if this was discussed already, but do we know what exactly is the appeal of SU to the 'tumblr crowd'?

Is it the ugly-ass "quirky" artstyle that seems to be deliberately made to be as unappealing as possible? Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, I mean Rick and Morty proved that, but SU is an action show meaning it can't just be single-handedly carried by the writing. Unless it's just some hipster bullshit which is probably the case.

Is it the fact that the main characters aren't on the "gender binary" on account of being fucking rock people meaning they can project whatever special snowflake nonsense they want onto them? Which to me doesn't even make sense since the central character as far as I can tell is a white straight dude they try to protect, although maybe the idea of a goofy white guy being a weak loser in comparison to the lesbian transgender polyamorxiswhateverthefucksexuals master race is the appeal.

Or was it just a victim of circumstance in the sense that it had the misfortune of being a cartoon that was gaining some popularity just around the time tumblr was busy being booty blasted that bronies weren't their thing and were aching to "claim" the next big thing so they could flaunt around that this time they were ground zero as opposed to those meanie trolls on /co/ or something.

The SU fandom is insane when it comes to fan art. People freak the fuck out over Rose Quartz (a character who is more curvy than fat) being drawn as not morbidly obese. They also freak out over people giving Garnet too light of skin.

I'm positive this is 90% of why Tumblr latches onto the show so strongly. They want "their" own phenomenon because they were supposedly kept out of that one show. Honestly I I'm surprised the writers and Sugar didnt expect the fandom to get this crazy. When one of your writers is like "Lul go watch the avengers if you want CIS male action" and then the next day act shocked the fandom is so filled with tism. If anything the fandom is what is gonna kill this shows creative team. With MLP you can separate bronies and the show. You know MLP is really meant for little girls and the biggest thing, to sell pony toys. The bronies where just an unexpected side effect. They really have no bearing on the overall product because its not marketed to them.

With SU...you really dont know who its marketed for? I mean its on Cartoon network so 10-13 range? But that cant be right because the writers regularly interact with the older fanbase that keeps the show alive. But as someone pointed out when things dont go their way, the fans scream and SCREAM about it, harassing the creators. I mean the same shit happens to the MLP writers but they can blow it off as "Dude this show isn't for you"

But with SU they don't have that luxury and because of that they have to craft stories their older fans want and expect, even though the show is basically a kids show, to prevent a shit storm. And eventually as a writer, that wears on you when you can't tell the story you want and kills your creative process.

Alternatively as @Meowthkip pointed out they could go the route of Gravity Falls and take digs at the older fanbase from time to time and remind them this is a kids show.

I really hope they do that, but then that'd be taking a risk and "problematic"

The conflict between the Bronies and Tumblr went nuclear during the Derpy debacle, which I know mostly about due to none other than Chris, who was big on signal boosting Save Derpy. For the uninitiated, this was a major attempt by SJWs and Tumblr in particular to get a character who was portrayed as sort of ditzy and out of it as labeled "ableist," and have this character's name (Derpy Hooves) changed because "Derpy" is offensive.

For the Bronies, this was perceived (perhaps correctly) as an attack on the creators' rights to put what they wanted in the show and seen as a potential avenue for unwanted executive meddling (something that's viewed as haram in the Brony community). Since Derpy was (apparently) some kind of minor in-joke for the fanbase to enjoy, often seen as an embodiment of a nod being given towards its audience, in the same way a Dreamworks picture tries to sneak in a few jokes for the Dads in the audience, she was also rather beloved by the Bronies in general - so they immediately took this as a declaration of war. If one character could be removed for being "ableist," then the gloves were off and there was no limit to what could potentially be censured. And the Tumblrinas had succeeded in doing so. She was, apparently, all but removed for the remainder of the season and the bulk of the episodes for that season featured extensive corporate meddling, purportedly because of the ball that started rolling because of the Tumblr shitstorm.

Things worked out for the Bronies because they're what kept the all-important cash engine grinding along, and when they started to flag off, Hasbro had no choice but to appeal to the horsefuckers of various stripes who supported them in the first place. This was the first real victory against the Tumblrinas who were fond of MLP, which was soonafter followed by the anti-cult of personality episode which pretty much pointed out the dangers of so-called equality pushers, so at this point, the show's staff was firmly behind the Bronies.

This was when the Tumblrinas left MLP behind, for they had lost it to the Brony hordes. A war fought in secret, by spergs and lunatics, with consequences that mattered only to them.
