This is mainly because their arcs are mostly irrelevant to the plot... The main plot doesn't revisit it again, it's up to you to pursue it. So the plot and mandatory events doesn't really factor her character arc in, but they dont need to as her arc has no bearing on the plot or her personality.
The characters arent all marmite. Rise and Teddie are the biggest offenders, mainly for being shrill 'Senpaiiiii' sorts. And if you dont want romance arcs, then every female SL in 4 and 5 have platonic paths too. In 3 you're forced into it though
Understandable, crafting different triggers depending on the social links, interweaving it in main plot scenes and still keeping the flow of the story and dialogue natural is quite a demand. It's a shame, you'd expect some modular bickering or referencing between characters; depending on how far you'd advanced your social links, you'd have different dialogue & interactions which encourage replayability etc. Probably nothing more than wishful thinking on my part, since these games take ages to beat and are filled to the brim with dialogue as is. I guess it comes with the scope.
Wasn't the bonus character added to P4G considered an offender as well? Fans certainly appear to dislike this "Marie". I'll be getting P4G regardless, but I'll bide my time unti the 30% discount hits again this week.
Both are worth playing, if only P3P for the FeMC route and the different SL's she gets
Play FES first though. Portable has a lot of it stripped down, like navigating the town is essentially menus. AI teammates isnt as bad as everyone makes out, you just need to remember to use the orders so the team does what you need them to. Also, Portable isnt balanced for full control so you'll steamroll the game. Finally, while The Answer is a bit of a slog, it does explain the ending which is needed.
Upon checking my PS3, it appears I imagined having downloaded P3 FES when PSN was still around. A practice I recommend to everyone come shopping season: look up the most acclaimed titles and your favourite genres, clear your schedule for the next 4 hours and go on a shopping spree. Doesn't swell the backlog too much and ensures you don't end up with one of those libraries from hell.
