Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

>lack of gender/LGBTQ+ diversity
>in an industry that's made up entirely of liberals who do nothing but push gender/LGBTQ+ diversity
>until they realize they can't make money from the woke and emotionally stunted manchildren who are the only people that actually watch this shit
>so they cut the blatant pandering or turn it into coded subtext in an attempt to actually sell it to children and their parents
>fail anyways
>post rainbow flags and cry about a lack of female and LGBT diversity in children's cartoons that don't appeal to children

Which would you say provided the best animation catalog in the 90s-00s? Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon?

Nickelodeon had a few decent shows at that time. CatDog, Spongebob Squarepants, ChalkZone, Rocko's Modern Life. These are standoffs for me. I would say Cartoon Network had the edge over Nickelodeon. Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Ed Edd n' Eddy, Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack. I found myself watching more CN than Nick.

That's not even going over their co-channel, Boomerang or their Adult Swim channel block. Nickelodeon felt too "safe" and formulaic. With CN, you didn't know what you would get.

Hand on heart: Cartoon Network.

Nick had great shows like Hey Arnold etc. but it paled in comparison to CN in the mid to late 90's. Powerpuff OG, Dexter's Lab, Samurai Jack etc. Too good.

Both channels are pale shells of their former selves. Nick is focused on SpongeBob, CN is focused on Teen Titans Go. The CalArts art style is getting stale.

Really, I can't choose. They were both pretty good at their peak then.

With Cartoon Network, I strongly believe that the channel started to lose its way once it was split off from Hanna-Barbera in 1997, and when their original studio was closed. When this happened, they lost a wealth of experience and staff, and effectively the studio had to start over from scratch. While the problem didn't show itself for a few years, as many of the original "Cartoon Cartoons" like Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, etc. had all got their starts at Hanna-Barbera and were well established by this time, it was clear that the split hurt many of the newer shows. I also believe that the "Cal Arts Style" that is much talked about is basically Cartoon Network's way of having its own established style so as to distance itself from their Hanna-Barbera roots, the latter of which obviously also had its own distinctive style.

Turner struck gold with having the licensing rights to older cartoons. Remember when Saturday morning cartoons consisted of Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry? That was their pull for children's programming and it paid off. CN was certainly more lax with their Standards and Practices compared to Nick.

I would say the beginning of the end for CN started with their push with Canadian based programming like Total Drama and 6teen.

Hanna-Barbera was producing stuff exclusively for CN until Bill Hanna died, and then they renamed it Cartoon Network Studios... and they didn't actually lose the staff when they lost the building. They just went over to the newer building in Sherman Oaks.

My understanding of it all was that although the production side of things were housed in a new building (which was absorbed into W-B once Bill died in 2001) Hanna-Barbera's extensive archive and animation collection was moved away into W-B's archive, making it more difficult to access for production staff (not to mention, Warner's apparently disposed of a lot of their stuff, some of which ended up being plastered on Cartoon Network's walls as there was so much of it!).

In addition, prior to the merger the studio was still working on new releases based off of old Hanna-Barbera properties (including new model sheets and designs for all the H-B characters) which was canned once Time-Warner took over and closed the studio. The Flintstones: On The Rocks special, which aired on Cartoon Network a few years later was basically a swansong to Hanna-Barbera by the network and incidentally features these new designs. The studio post-merger between 1998 and 2001 was really just Hanna-Barbera in name and bore no relation to the previous studio.

The studio post-merger was basically how the studio was immediately before the merger, though; exclusively producing shows for Cartoon Network in the Nickelodeon creator-driven tradition.

Yep, H-B as it was kinda died without a whimper.
But hey, let's be honest, would you rather watch this...

Thankfully there's only one confirmed female pedo in Western animation and she's probably not going to be working any time soon. https://twitter.com/juliavickerman/
Last year when the now thankfully canceled Ren and Stimpy reboot was announced, one of the people who worked on her show went on a rant about how the original show degraded and humiliated women in animation or some shit, and far too many people noted the irony in how she was saying this as she also aided and abetted a pedo.

(I, however, was thinking "Way to erase Lynne Naylor and Kelly Armstrong." And, for that matter, Teale Wang and Vicky Jenson.)

goddammit I thought that was just one of twitter's flashes of lunacy never to be seen again. Turns out it's real. And I'm not even going to attempt to wonder what the fuck that thing is in the right-hand corner or it's "queer" work (jeez those walleyed dolls have seen some shit).

I'm not usually one to give a shit about how someone looks, but the fact the woman in the top right has a head like an egg and is right next to an egg-like character (I assume one she made) is very funny.
Gotta write/draw what you know. 🚬 Which is a theme in today's creators. I can't name a single one from 2010s onward who hasn't made at least one character (including the main character) similar to them and would rather spew preachy bullshit than be an entertaining escape from Planet Honkhonk.

I remember that time SUfags attacked an artist on Tumblr for drawing Rose Quartz just a tiny bit more thinner. And I remember that it got so bad it almost made her shoot her own brains out.
That show and its fans are just riddled with drama, isn't it?
Were. SU is over so now they've spread to other fandoms and it's not hard to spot who used to be an SUfag. But you are correct, there was a TON of drama that was equal parts lulzy (review-bombing the real Keystone Motel) and fucking horrifying (Jasper otherkins sad she didn't have a bigger role or was a uwu softgirl and wanted to do a flip).

Oh that old chestnut. While it's true SUfags can be obnoxious faggots at the best of times, that incident wasn't down to them per se. Still retarded though don't get me wrong.
What do you mean it "wasn't down to them"? No matter which angle you look at it, they did that shit and should feel bad. And feel lucky she didn't go through with it unlike other cancel victims who sadly did.

Why Allyship in any capacity does not work unless you are commanding armies in countries at war Exhibit "D". for Disney. Or douchebag, fuck that one hit wonder.
