But… I do think that Lucas slipped here in that his version of fatherhood does involve anal rape. this “Popeye-looking” perseverance also really struck me. Like, I took more time than I should to understand if that’s a common slang or a new insult he heard (I think he may have with all those weird faces he makes in videos and he has a long history of stealing and recycling comments about him as projections to others).

Narcissism definitely explains his own distorted self-image, but I was also attributing his narcissism and tendency to use emotional or just tangential logic to explain why he sees women smile when they don’t or can “tell who the republicans are” out and about.

But the facial perception distortion feels psychotic/organic rather than personality-fixed. I know there are lots of neurological disorders involving facial recognition difficulties (“The Man who mistook his wife for a hat” is a great book of case studies in this disorders). I did a little research to see if there was left neglect or anything similar in schizophrenia or psychotic disorders (schizoaffective, bipolar).

Facial perception disturbance is definitely linked to psychotic disorders, as is emotional facial perception, or ability to correctly recognize facial expressions. So not only does Lucas’s broken brain tell him that Zoomers are all smiling and flirting, his ego supports his conclusions and blocks any reality testing or insight into the possibility that he may be wrong.

this is unsurprisingly terrifying to me. The more unhinged, stressed, unbalanced he is, the less able he is to recognize clear signals of rejection by women and more likely to interpret polite dismissals as invitations.

I'd guess he was on SSI, so he'd have to earn more than the maximum income or have more than the maximum assets you can have to qualify for it, which seems unlikely. Or he would have to have stopped being disabled, and if he was disabled a couple months ago, he still is, unless he was completely faking it.

I doubt he's lost it entirely. Maybe his payee (hope he has one) is keeping him on a tighter leash and trying to get him into actual housing. The fucker is really going to die otherwise, with that nearly gangrenous foot.
