The "rich young prince" parable in the Bible is often mis-interpreted that you have to be poor/give up riches to follow Christ. That is not what Jesus is saying at all. The point is for the rich young prince who asked Jesus how to gain eternal life - money was his "god". Jesus knew the prince's heart and that he worshiped money more than God. Until he got rid of that false god in his life, he was unable to follow the true god.
Most people have false gods they put above the true God - that's the point of the parable. Identify your false god and get rid of it to find eternal life.
