The "rich young prince" parable in the Bible is often mis-interpreted that you have to be poor/give up riches to follow Christ. That is not what Jesus is saying at all. The point is for the rich young prince who asked Jesus how to gain eternal life - money was his "god". Jesus knew the prince's heart and that he worshiped money more than God. Until he got rid of that false god in his life, he was unable to follow the true god.

the US has very long transitioned into a service oriented economy rather than manufacturing, but the manufacturing that is left is either computer controlled, or requires significant skills. the services offered generally are also highly skilled, but there are more low skilled services (waiter, greeter, phone sales cold caller, data entry) available and because it's a service, people aren't usually keen on paying a walmart shopping cart wrangler a payrate equal to an ASE mechanic. people value certification and education to improve skills to earn a higher wage, and after the 80's that spiraled out of control where the paper is borderline meaningless and people are "passing testing" without actual useful skills for employment since higher education become very profitable selling lies of a guaranteed "good job". nothing is guaranteed except the output of your labor with your own hands - for good or bad.
