This reminds me of how I appreciate Internet historian as a guy who gives me similar vibes as the more oldschool content creators. While his heavily researched and edited videos are excellent, his videogame shitposts and the videos where he just sits there rambling with a friend about random topics and fucking around in photoshop are entertaining too.

I still grieve them, and it is sad that they had to tone themselves down as the years went to avoid strikes from youtube. I also miss the shitty mic that slowbeef had back then, it made him sound whinier while roasting someone.

He is/was doing some soda or food reviews I think, so he asked Beetus to take down all of the older videos that made fun of him to not impact negatively his new content iirc.

They just got old, man. They were going soft, and its not just social justice rotting slowbeef's brain. Plus Diabeetus obviously got sick of it. It died a natural death. Just be sure to archive what you can. Im sure theres a ton of lost rps at this point(iirc they actually did a fucking Viddler exclusive video.)


Also anyone know whatever happened to that furry playing SMW? That shit was the most brutal rp. Like you can feel the hate that had for that faggot, so bad the furry spent the rest of his mario LP seething abou it. I wonder where he is today...

Billymc is still truckin, though he gets bouts of aggravation for his channel, I think. Our boy @proteus4994 is chillin in some threads around here. Chip cheezum and his ilk have shit the bed and are just boring now. That's all the ones I know about.

Darkseed and Darkseed 2 are still seared into my brain. I wish Slowbeef didn't become what he did, but I also wish that SA was still the same forum it was 20 years ago.

I would actually really like to watch another Darkseed LP, has ANYONE else done one?

As someone who has never been on Something Awful and knows nothing about its history, can I ask for the short version of what happened?

I'm guessing its some variation of "woke culture took over" as nowadays I often hear them and that mentioned together, but apparently people didn't like SA even before that, despite how much of the internet they appeared to have influence over.

Another question.... okay, as someone who is programming-illiterate, can someone explain to me why the "Busco Quadnary" guy was totally wrong? I know what binary is and the bare basics of why its used but.... actually, I'm guessing this is a case where if you don't know your stuff you simply can't understand how batshit it is.

There's specific Let's Play I've been trying to find an archive of to no success. It was Mr. DJB and another dude Let's Playing a troll game called Sonic Inflation Adventure. DJB removed all his videos because of troll remorse and/or watching his girlfriend getting fucked by other dudes. It was seriously one of the funniest Let's Play I've ever seen.

It's an absolute shame that pretty much everyone associated with Retsuprae went crazy or became incredibly unfunny.

I was only active in the 2000's and stopped visiting altogether around 2011. I think the real fall came around the election in 2016 because gender politics took hold. Theres a ton of threads on SA including some on its founder Lowtax, as well as well known SA LP'ers.

I didn't hear the whole thing, because I can't adjust my volume to hear the guy without slowbeef destroying my eardrums. Plus, every time the guy was about to explain his idea, Diabetus would start wittering over him and I got frustrated. This is what I got from what I watched.

The TL:DR is that the guy is just using words from completely disparate fields of CompSci because he's a grifter. Some of the stuff he mentioned:
  • Binary is used because the electrical circuits that make up a computer system can either have an electrical current passing through them (1) or not (0). Switching to base-4 numbering system would mean that circuits would need to be designed for 4 different voltage levels, making them much more complex.
  • He talks about programming languages for a bit. I really don't see what this has to do with electronic circuit design or number systems. Ignore.
  • He talks about Depth/Z-buffers. One problem that early 3d programmers faced was the Visibility Problem which essentially is concerned with whether objects drawn by a computer should appear in front of or behind other drawn objects. A Depth-buffer (or Z-buffer) is designed to get around this problem in hardware (that is, a developer just has to tell the GPU to "use the Z-buffer when drawing" and the GPU will correctly draw closer objects in front of objects that are further away without the dev having to worry about it). This guy keeps calling binary "two-dimensional" and I have no idea what he means.
  • Compilers. Programmers don't type in binary, they type in a language that is human-readable. It's the job of a compiler to take text files and turn them into an executable that the computer understands (actually this is two operations, compiling and linking, but usually "compiler" and "compiling" refers to both of these as one). He claims that investors will get a quadnary compiler. Which doesn't make sense since it will either make executables in whatever the fuck quadnary is - so our current binary-designed computers won't understand them - or it will just compile code down to binary anyway, so what's the point?
  • He talks about games being built on top of Unreal Engine, then immediately calls these games "built from the ground up." Slowbeef points out the contradiction.
So yeah. I still don't know what quadnary is supposed to be or how it's supposed to make computers faster. But I hope my post explained why nothing he says makes sense.
