Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? There are a few ways in general, though all have subsequent costs. Direct reduction of government subsidies, the placement of burdensome regulation on a state, fucking with the levers of bureaucracy to damage them, the funding of primary opponents in an election, the application of public pressure, constant legal battles over trivial shit to drain the opposing governors capital and funds, etc. All of these are entirely legal or at least not illegal. There are many ways the federal government can squeeze the states.

Absolutely nothing. The thing with such a tactic is that it is a giant game of chicken. Strong arming the states incurs a rather steep cost over time to the federal government, a cost which will be felt well outside the states it is done on. Hence why Trump never did it. But Trump had other options which cost him way less, he had the luxury of choice.

On the state side in this game of chicken is the fact that it does hurt the state in question a -lot-. The end of this game is based on who blinks first, who feels the damage to them is too great to continue.

The thing you miss in this is that this is the tactic of someone who LACKS charisma. If someone has charisma, they could have avoided this being a necessity to begin with. This is and always has been a tactic of last resort for the presidency. Done only when Capital is so low as to make the cost of doing this pale in comparison. After all, if you already have 0 Capital, what Capital will be burnt in the process?

That is what came to my mind when I saw the 18 wheeler story. It doesn't sound like a lie to me it sounds like a dementia based story. I've seen old people with it invent intricate stories about how they used to babysit for the Kennedys and outlandish shit like that. Usually they get very defensive when that notion is challenged too because it is very real to them, then they become afraid if their mind reaches the point of contemplating that it might not have actually happened.
On some weirdly empathetic level of mine it's almost a pitiable situation to me. Yes, they clearly packed the press pool and arrange his contacts so he is never face to face with anyone who would challenge the narrative they are trying to push, but they also have to do that because the dude is so frail that he might have a legit breakdown due to the collapse of the house of cards that is his mental reality. As much as I hate him for his role in the deep state for the last several decades and as much as I like to laugh at his stupidity and thinly veiled racism, I still have to feel sorry for a man who literally has to have his alternate reality supported because he may have a pants shitting fit of terror rage in public if it wasn't. Biden is a prisoner in his own body and his access to the keys is waning.
