It was actually Sonic he wanted to use, but honestly I think the only major difference would have been Chris simply reusing Sonic characters wholesale (I.E. the last 'major' addition to the Sonichu cast IIRC was 'Ren Skysoar' who was literally just Dr. Eggman from the original Sonic games) as opposed to just a bunch of weird hedgehog offshoots and Amy Rose with a Raichu tail. Despite it being his "brand" Chris really never invested much into Sonichu, as evidenced by his comics almost immediately just being his version of real life events and his escapist revenge fantasies. Besides the medallions, Sonichu himself and anything associated with him never actually influenced anything Chris is most infamous for doing except the Mary Lee Walsh meeting where he 'wanted to convey to her a message from Sonichu' but that easily could have just been him saying he would be a mouth piece for Sonic proper.

Ironically, Bob was the one who actually thought Sonichu could have some value as a way for Chris to handle his autism based on that old letter.

But no, Chris has always been his own worst enemy from day 1 and probably stands as an example of where the 'nature vs nurture' argument fails for both sides as while he might have been far better off if he'd gotten the education he'd needed, he still ended up being a colossal piece of shit personality wise that at no point actually demonstrated a willingness to develop skills beyond basic levels.
