I burst out laughing when Mike forgot about Midsommar. I remember so many people saying it was the best movie of the year/ever and now no one fucking cares about it
That movie was held together by its cinematography. It was somewhat interesting seeing a horror movie in the daytime. The cast was bland and the shock factor was dull.

I liked Midsommar quite a bit. Its a good fucked up horror movie that looks different from what you usually expect out of horror.

But it also kind of got lost in the shuffle pretty quickly. That's probably the downfall of not being based on an IP as those things seem to fade quicker unless they are attached to some kind of brand.

I feel like the same thing happened to Splice, which was a super fucked up sci-fi horror film (at least as fucked up as mainstream would allow at the time), but didn't seem to have much staying power in the collective conscience.

I'll freely admit I'm just spitballing and still developing a theory, but I think a large part of "staying power" depends upon "expandability" of the story.

I've not seen either movie, but just reading their synopsis on wikipedia, it strikes me that after the film... there's no where else to go. Meanwhile the classics like Freddy and Jason - well the sequel bait was pretty obvious. Heck, John Wick had some staying power and I would point out that it had lots of threads and potential one could pull and develop on for possible sequels. (how effective were those sequels... I'll leave to you)

Maybe we call it the... "potential fan fic equation" of a movie. The more fics it could fuel - the stronger the cultural impact. Or I could just be drunk. That's also likely.

I don't know why Death Wish 3 was on BOTW and based on their reaction to it, it shouldn't have been.

It's like putting Evil Dead on the wheel.

Also the problem is that we get an ending that's
meant to be triumphant, but is actually fucking horrible:

Her boyfriend who wanted to dump her stuck with her anyway because she needed him
She invites herself on the trip and is a fucking downer the whole time
He gets roofied and raped
She decides to punish him by having him burn alive when she could have spared him and sent someone else who was willing to die like that

All that ending was missing was a freeze frame and We Are The Champion to play over it just to make it as incongruent as it gets.

I mean it's a very capable movie, gorgeous shots and everything, but overhyped and made overly political when it shouldn't have been.

Isn't 3 regarded as the best one?

I can see 4 or 5 being rated the 'worst.' I sat through 5 because one of my favorite actresses is in it.... barely. They need an excuse for Kersey to go on another rampage.

Yeah it's usually either 1 or 3 as the best one, I'd say it's 3 > 1 > 2 > 4 >>>>> 5

5 is still watchable but not a repeated viewing kind of thing

People generally regard 1 and 3 to be the best in the series. 2 has it's fans mostly among the more die hard exploitation crowd because it's a far meaner and sleazier film than the later sequels. It also attained some legendary status due to the difficulty of obtaining the fully uncut version with the graphic rape scene in tact.

I actually enjoy all 5 movies and yes even part 5. Part 5 has a great villain and some fun moments even if Bronson clearly did not give a fuck anymore and it shows.

No it's the ironic worst. Reviewed on jabootu back in the day. Had Troi in it.

EDIT: y'all being serious or ironic?

On its own its alright, but compared to the first 3 it's pretty bad

Death Wish 3 is on the same level as the likes of Road House or Schwarzenegger's Commando or The Running Man or Stallone's Cobra and if you think those are bad then fuck you.
Nah. Those are awesome and I'd agree with you. Have any of you watched Bollywood? That's some kick ass shit too.

I think there's some disconnect because DW1 at least is on the same level as more serious cinema. The disconnect of two very different grades in the same series throws some people off. (Imagine if Commando was like... a sequel to Full Metal Jacket.)

I agree that the tone definitely changed with DW3. DW2 is more in line with the first film's tone.
