General GunTuber thread

why is he complaining about it blocking the charging handle?
it doesn't block the handle unless you're putting it super far back. it's meant to be 3-4 slots forward of the rear, enough for a back up folding sight if you want. putting it more forward also lets you put nose to charging handle (if you do that) and shorten the length of pull by half, accounting for armor and the more forward position of the optic.

look at any picture of actual people using a SpecterDR and you can see this pretty handily. about the only people that use them that far back are machinegunners with the M145, or the Canadians (or Dutch) with the C79, and that has a completely different mount than the ARMS one in the video. ARMS intended the QD mount to work in conjunction with the ARMS #40 low profile flip up sight... requiring the optic moved forward on the rail.

this is some basic "how to use in the field" stuff...

and why is he complaining about it blocking the charging handle? you only have use it once.
Ideally, only once, but things can happen. The same reason I like the forward assist, I also like to be able to easily grab and rack my charging handle.

Of course, just don't mount your optic too far back, I'm just playing Devil's Avocado.

Here we are, talking about idiots going for the newest overpriced gear they don't need... meanwhile Ian is pulling his old bubba guns out of the safe again.

That "flashlight" holder is nothing short of hideous, and the scope despite being technically functional makes my head hurt, but I'll grant it to the man: he does look like he's having a blast firing that damn thing. And it might not even be the concussion.

You know when you're driving down the street and that teenage kid passes you in his chopped and dropped stanced all to fuck bimmer? That kid's always smiling because his car is retarded but he loves it, and at the end of the day that's what matters.

I like Ian's retarded chopped up guns, they're funny to me and I like seeing something that someone built.

I'm a bit of a purist and I don't like to modify my guns all that much. Mostly because I have a policy of only holding on to three guns at a time so I tend to trade my guns semi-regularly. It keeps the wife happy, and keeps me from sinking too much money into the hobby. But so long as the gun works and it's not completely heretical (like ruining a rare gun) I'm fine with letting people have fun with their property.

In Ian's case I can see where he was coming from, and I can't even too mad because he's clearly embarrassed by his own past work. 15 years are plenty of time for someone to improve, after all. I imagine if he tried to do the same project today he'd do things substantially different. And again, he's clearly having fun. I've seen a couple bubbas in my time that insisted their guns were great, all the while gritting their teeth whenever they pulled the trigger on their cut-down Mosins or "lightened" SKSs.

I dont mind ones that can be reversed completely. the M1 garand has a great after market that that thing could rebuilt to service standards easily.

Only on the bayonet l from what I saw. Also, that M1 wasn’t in original condition when he got it so I don’t see any har in tricking it out like he did
He was more embarrassed by the entire concept (and cheap kludge-ness) of the build in hindsight. He was way into scout rifles back then, but he has admitted a few times that it's a bit of a gimmick. Still, he likes the rifle, beater Garands are no big deal, it works, he has fun with it, and he's able to laugh at himself for making something so goofy. So I'm cool with it. I would just not build one myself in a million years.
