Taliban offensive of 2021 and collapse of Afghan government.

whatever the fuck is going on down there, it is escalating super fast! most likely the reason why 3 press conferences have been delayed atm at the WH.

to POW sperg:

Americans did fuck NV hard by agreeing to unrealisticly high reparations that had no chance passing through congress, just to sign the accords and give Nixon a political clout. I thought that POWs were simply disposed as unnecessary bagage as NV realized that money weren't coming and original plan to hold hostages for money was simply not going to PR well with the world.

As recent as few years ago, Russian .gov passed to US families some shit about their 5 pilots shot down over 'nam. There are some parts of American planes still in Russian institutes where they were sent for analysis. No doubt that KGB had a hand in POW interrogations and possibly detainment.

It is possible some POWs got liquidated, but SRV would be terrified of the blow back if it got out. Which isn't to say it didn't happen, but it would have been small. The Delta force rescue prep was for 200+, and even in the jungle 200 bodies is hard to hide, especially with the attention the area has gotten. And 40+ years is a long, long time to keep a secret, especially when if you could prove your secret it'd be a multi-million dollar payday.
It is much more likely the prisoners were South Vietnamese, and may have been moved to Laos because the Americans were wanting to inspect camps and search for remains, and SRV didn't want images of the conditions they were keeping their vietnamese prisoners on the American news, especially as relations were improving with the US and falling with USSR/China.
Which is where the confusion came from, and why the mission was was scrapped: These were Vietnam War prisoners, but not Americans.

IIRC for some of their prisoners VC would put a guy in a village, tell the villagers 'keep an eye on them' and then leave because they didn't have the man power for prison duty. These guys might have been in vietnamese possession for years at this point, and with no one else to rely on, probably integrated into the village. Even if they were told they could leave in 1973, they may have just decided to stay (or figured it was a trick). Some of them, like previously mention shitbird, may have collaborated with the enemy and feared consequences if they left.
There is also possibility of glowniggers working with the SRV in the 80s to bury the whole thing and ensure anyone who was still in-country stayed in-country.

There was definitely KGB/Russian involvement in pilot interrogation, and some of the pilots may have been taken to the Soviet Union to provide insight on American planes; that sort of intelligence WOULD be worth the diplomatic hit.
But lots of the conspiracies talk about hundreds of POWs in the labor camps because the Russians wanting cheap labor, and that just isn't realistic.

Something tells me he wouldn't have left advanced military equipment there or citizens in some one runway airport.

The equipment was not "abandoned", it was to be turned over the ANA. Also none of the equipment is particularly advanced.

Good chart of some of the shit we left there. Personally the big concerning one for is that HEDP Mk 19 ammo. 60k is a lot and one ammocan can fuck shit up well it its aimed well.

Other than the mk 19, the only thing possibly of real value is the Tuccanos, depending on the load out.
The Cessna COIN Grand Caravans are just a grand caravan with military avionics and Hellfire mounts. Once you run out of hellfires, its worthless except as a spotter or small transport.
The Tuccanos, on the other hand, have optional internal and external gun mounts (bullets are easy to get your hands on )and are designed to mount dumbfire rockets you can get from the Chinese or Russians. The only thing that doesn't make them a solid win for the Taliban is that the pilots and maintenance will be turned over to Afghans, so who knows if they will ever fly and if they do, for how long.

i wonder if all the rampant incest caused this?
i knew a guy from saudi arabia and he said his parents were unusual because they weren't first cousins. they were unrelated.

Incest does bad things for IQ. Its common in the Arab world - where marriage alliances are important so reaffirming an alliance is more important than having your family tree fork, and keeping land/wealth whole is crucial to survival. And where you may not want to take on responsibility for a bunch of worthless cousin. Its doubly common in Afghanistan because of the isolation of the villages.

Fun fact: The Egyptian Pharonic Dynasties practiced extreme incest - like brother/sister and parent/child incest, with occasional injections from other royal families (including Ramses' father). They over came the genetic issues by breeding like rabbits in more or less communal fashion and mercilessly weeding out any non-hackers during childhood. If the mendel square says you've got 25% of mostly normal kids and 75 cases of pyramids-have-eyes. So you just make sure the current generation pops out 100 kids.

I'm still having trouble seeing how different tribes in that region consider themselves one nation. They do not. It's everyone around them project this notion of statehood onto savages who don't recognize any borders other than those of their tribes.

Answer: They don't.
There is a general understanding that their neighbors have said "this area is your reservation" but all the ethnic groups that aren't Afghanistan-only have cross border ties. This is the reason for friction with Iran, and the reason way Pakistan's ISI use the Taliban. The Tajiks have ties to - brace yourself for the shock - Tajikistan. There used to be a King/Waroverlord until he got Soviet'd but the central authority was never strong.

Afghanistan is a bunch of small pockets of population and they have two common causes:
Islam
Fuck outsiders.(Also technically "Manlove thursday and fucking little boys".)

They sent glower Burns in there to negotiate with Baradar, a guy he put in jail for 8 years to talk about the Aug 31 deadline. How the fuck did the WH think that was going to work out?

There's nothing uncertain about it, you dishonest faggots. These women have already been turned into property. Young girls are getting kidnapped and married off to Taliban fighters. Why don't you send some female journos there for on the ground reporting and see how it turns out for them.

tbh I can imagine some sort of "haha, you bastard, so now it seems our fortunes have changed. I remember you, you were an unwavering son of a bitch, but I can respect that. Let us barter your peoples' lives."

Funny that. It made me think, do you think our people would cry for blood if the Taliban bombed congress, killing everyone, even our beloved president? Or would we cheer?

I think, people left to their own devices, would realize nothing of value was lost. The media would frame it as horrible, of course, and the surviving cretins of the system would fight for power while deploying their loyal meat heads to the desert. The media would try to present the idea that we should be mourning, and it's really up in the air whether people would just fall in line or not. Probably, given the lack of response to everything else deserving one, but maybe not. I definitely don't think it alone would fix our situation, removing a government is only half the struggle, the other being having people ready to replace it.

Point being we need people ready to take over as the current regime fails, by whatever means it happens to. Heck, once there are people ready to take control, and it's known that they are, any group can act independently to remove the current regime if they like the look of the new one poised to take control.

Addendum: To be able to take control of an existing system requires people who know how it works, who have worked in and around it, and at this point, it might be the case anyone working within our political system is so corrupted by the process of making themselves amenable to it that we won't find allies there. It depends on how different the new regime aims to be. In any case, creating a parallel system that usurps the authority of the existing one could be effective. Over time defectors then can be used to help absorb components of the old system and dismantle them in ways that don't result in an unnecessarily destructive amount of chaos.

The thought has crossed my mind multiple times over the past year, that the biggest tragedy of 9/11 was the last plane not making it to its destination. Idk if I'm being hyperbolic in my own thought process but I do know there's not many people more deserving the rope than those in the US Congress.

Those were strategic targets. the fulda gap was full of tactical nukes
I wouldn't really know about that. There were no nuclear weapons in Western Europe. Anything else was just rumor and speculation. The US had no plans for use of nuclear weapons and V Corps and specifically III COSCOM had no nuclear plans what so ever.

Yeah, SAS Treysa is still glowing in the night, but there were no tactical nukes in germany...

Can an exceptional kiwi list all the aircraft that are tracked on public open services leaving Kabul so we can cross reference it with the max airlift capacity of the airframes so we can estimate how many people were actually airlifted?
honestly at best your going to get a guestimate with the C-17 since they are not using the seats at all and just having people sit on the floor.
