They don't need converts because it's not about converting people, it's controlling other people's lives. Social activism is the perfect avenue for that; "protest" is so romanticized that doing something as protest is akin to doing something on behalf of the church centuries ago. You can do plainly abusive things as "activism" and the target of your abuse doesn't have much recourse, because as far as the mob is concerned, the onus is automatically on the victim to explain why they're being targeted by a designated force of "good."

The short term goal in shutting down highways genuinely was as mean and petty as "make people late, interfere with their income."

R*ddit drama is way more small scale but it's the same basic idea, anyone who signs up to be a janny fetishizes small amounts of power over others to some degree. In the discord leaks you can tell they're sort of enjoying the tug-o-war of fake reddit "power," the larp of it all sorta gets them off.

Dude I think it was top #1 at one point by the numbers (though of course it was censored on any lists).
There was one hilarious day when admins were trying to fudge the algorithm to prevent r/the_donald posts appearing on r/all which resulted in the first ten pages of the front page being exclusively donal posts for like 24 hours. Amazing salt.

(And actually that's such a weird "mistake" that persisted for so long that there must be an agent of chaos on reddit staff; so cheers to that dude.)
