Dead Space Thread

Just finished base DS 3, I gotta say, starting with the good things about it...The music is very good but it feels a tad too orchestral for Dead Space. its Co-op isnt bad on the technical level, there was practically no lag and the thing flow well and it can be fun killing necromorphs together (at the cost of literally making the necros not scary anymore). I played it on Impossible and the game's true difficulty doesnt relay on what you would expect from the first 2 but rather on your resources gathering, its all about getting those circuits and resources to unlock more spots for curcuits so your weapons can do a damn against the necros. And you know, I feel like the weapon customization COULD have worked within the Dead Space context if they didnt went as crazy as they did in 3. What I mean is that the customization allows you to make some pretty OP combinations, one of mine were what I dubbed "A Force to be Ripper with", it was a Ripper and Force Gun combination...necros get close? Ripper, TOO close? Force gun to push them away. There other combinations probably more OP than that but I legit didnt want to make the game THAT easy on the hardest difficulty. Ultimately, they could have the gun customization, just maybe taking it way easier...

Ah yes, I cant forget something that legit made me pissed when I realised it.

Me: wait, what you mean I can only carry two weapons?! I could carry 4 in the last 2!

I legit got Bioshock Infinite flashbacks over "suddenly" not being able to carry more than two guns with me and the disappointment was the same. I wondered who had this moronic decision. I THINK they thought it would make the game too easy to have 4 fully customised guns....but ONE is already enough to carry you through the game most of the times, at most you keep the plasma cutter as a side arm to cover. But still, I feel like its seriously limiting my choices...then again, the last 2 games, while you COULD have 4 guns, they still didnt guarantee you total protection against them necros as each gun had their pros and cons and the key was learning how to work around their strengths and weaknesses and coming out ontop. It rewarded you playing it smart instead of just unloading you Contact Beam on anything that moves.
Shooting stuff with TK also feels severely under appreciated in this game...before it was a smart way to save on precious ammo...it wasnt OP, simply useful to use in a pickle...there was no greater joy than cut off a necro's blade and shooting it with the TK kinesis. But in this game, while you CAN still do that, the game just doesnt reward you much for it because outside of still looking cool, there is no benefit outside of saving ammo that you have plenty of for the most part. So thats another feature from the series that was nerfed or nullified with the changes 3 have made.

Ah yes, let me talk about the characters. The new ones, I mean, tho Ellie sometimes feel like a different character than the strong but smart woman she was in 2. Most of them are...alright...the old wounded guy felt interesting until they just kill him off rather quickly once you get to the planet...The guy and chick pilots are literally red shirts to be killed the moment we got inside the planet but the little we get of them...they are REALLY fucking whinny. Santos was alright, didnt catch my attention but I legit didnt want her to die when it happened...man, if only any of us had time slowing technology to use on the cage and/or necro-spider so we can buy sometime for Santos... *look at Stasis modules* pity we dont have any of these outside of gameplay apparently.

And now we get to Norton. Fuck me, where do I start with this guy? Never before have I seen a man of leadership so childishly incompetent. He seemed competent enough at the beginning but shit goes downhill once we get to Ellie and he suddenly wants to flee to somewhere else...where to exactly since they imply we are getting necro outbreaks and unitologists riots nearly everywhere? He doesnt answer that, he just dodges it and acts like a childish moron again. How the hell did Norton reach his leadership position by being this whiny? And dont tell me that the marker signal was messing with his brain, that feels like a handwave excuse to justify him backstabbing the whole operation by ratting us out to the Unitologist Ned Flanders under the comical delusion that they would only kill Isaac and let them leave. HOW.THE.HELL.YOU.GOT.ANY.LEADERSHIP.POSITION?! You incompetent fuckwit! It is no wonder EarthGov fell if most of its squad leaders were just as incompetent as you! The novel also implies that Norton was always like this so, worst case scenario, the marker just slightly sped things up...ultimately he is just a poorly written character who becomes evil because the plot needed to bring Isaac and Ellie back together and needed an excuse for Unitologist Ned Flanders to find them. Carver is okay-ish for the most part, he is meant to be a dick so at least I applaud the consistency...I felt like there was a good character in there but given how he was introduced in the last chapter of this saga, he feels under used (when honestly Weller from Extraction and Severed would have been a more fitting character for this role as we would know he has experience with necros and emotional stakes that we have actually seen). He sort of reminds of Vega from Mass Effect 3, right down to both being muscular hispanic men with a backstory that gets explored in another media like a book or animated movie and that acts rather hostile to the main character but slowly builds trust through the story. Im not saying Dead Space 3 was ripping off Mass Effect 3 but when I see some of its similarities, it is difficult to not get a "copying homework" vibe. But while I at least came to respect Vega by the end of ME 3, I mean, from all human squad mates, he is legit the least boring, Carver just fucks off majorly by the end when he handles the Codex, the key that was make or break for Earth, to Unitologist Ned Flanders so he doesnt kill Ellie...something not even Isaac and Ellie wanted to do because they knew what was at stake. So instead of just Ellie dying (tho lets be honest, Ellie's survival felt like a last second decision), now all of humanity, INCLUDING ELLIE, will now die. Great job, Carver, Earth's destruction is indirectly your own god damn fault now.

Well, this is already as autistically long as is, Im sure that there were other things I forgot to mention so maybe I can leave them for the Awakened DLC "review".

Am I the only person who liked DS3 and the co-op? I get the criticism that people have for the game, the story shit the bed and the microtransactions were retarded but the game was really fun. Mabey it's just my nostalgia because my little sister and I bonded over the co-op.

My biggest fear for the remake is how badly they will fuck up the lighting. DS has some of the best lighting in video games, it's not all that impressive from a tech standpoint but the artists really knew who to craft a horror environment.

I really liked the co-op because the two players see wildly different things. Isaac (player 1) has already been through all the bullshit with the Marker so he sees things as they really are. Carver (player 2) is new to all this, and so in the co-op dungeons the Marker is actively fucking with his head. From seeing background detail and even physical props that Isaac can’t, to asymmetric segments that have both players completing different tasks.

My favorite bit was me as Carver waiting for a door to open when suddenly I get sucked into a nightmare world where I’m fending off waves of necromorphs while also shooting at a Marker, similar to the last boss of DS2. Afterwards, I asked my co-op partner what they saw while all that was going on, and they said that they were also getting swarmed by necromorphs while the door was ‘jammed’ and trying to open, while Carver was standing in the corner clutching at his face screaming “GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!” over and over again..

These sequences only happen in the co-op dungeons but they’re easily the best part of the game.

So yeah, "quick" review of the Awakening DLC and thoughts on the series and "its future".

I think a good question is "Why this was made in the first place?". I have mixed feelings on it, I really enjoyed some segments while others kind of felt a tad rushed.

The plot is that Carver and Clarke somehow didnt die when the brother moon landed ontop of them when it perished. Its never fully explained HOW they didnt die, the DLC did allude to a possible explanation but it shut that down for the sake of an unrelated revelation. The dual think their jobs are done and the goal is to get back to earth to probably retire to somewhere warm and make a fortune off the vids, tho that doesnt last too long until a Necro Norton appear (I feel like the devs were aware of the hatred towards this character so they decided to let the player kill him twice), revealing the necromorphs and thus the marker signal are still around. Im not sure how long this takes after the ending of DS 3 where Ellie said that the signal IS gone so who knows. The brother moon is technically dead but apparently it was able to ring the dinner bell to its 7 brothers. They are hungy and they are coming, thats literally the arc words of this DLC. So the goal is now about reaching Earth before the brother moons...not sure what is Isaac/Carver's plan tho, what CAN humanity do against 7 moon sized enemies? Somehow build 7 machines? I dont know, it all kind of reminds me of Mass Effect 3 except way bleaker. You know shit's fucked when Isaac, who did build quite the resistance to the marker signal, is getting mind raped again by these lovecraftian gods.

The visuals are still great and this image is pretty fucking horrifying

The moons talk to Isaac and Im surprised it doesnt take much terror from them, perhaps because they make sure they have this lovecraftian aspect to their speech, as if to imply that the only reason they are bothering "talking" to your pathetic mind is to taunt you over the futile nature of your struggle.

Anyway, I feel like this DLC almost has this sense of self awareness with the base game's shortcomings in the form of dialogue and other things like killing Necro-Norton and Isaac calling Carver out for handing over the Codex to Unitologist Ned Flanders...there is also the fact the DLC tries to bring some psychological horror of the previous two games back but I feel like its shorter runtime, there was only so much they could do. You are constantly getting hallucinations and I do mean a lot, it feels like the writers REALLY want to bring that DS horror asap and it kind of gets in the way in a gameplay perspective. A lot of previous areas are recycled with some minor differences here and there...I know this is a DLC and reusing assets from the base game is just something you do but it kiiiind of gives this DLC a somewhat cheap feeling. Tho that could just be me.

Back to the story, the dual are able to get an unitologist ship and take off into the Terra Nova to get a shockpoint engine (pretty much DS's equivalent of hyperspace), we get a short zero gravity sequence as we return inside the ship and see that its a tad more Ishimura-ish and thats the best way I can describe the rest of the DLC now, Dead Space 1 lite. We got candles (I LEGIT am asking where did the even nuttier Unitologists found that shit even more than the ones in the first game), creepy writing, the usual. Again, it all feels like its desperate to give Dead Space 1 vibes (it helped I was playing in the engineer suit). Anyway, turns out that Unitologists are either going more insane or starting to question their faith altogether...its a tad bizarre and sad to see that, on one hand, the unitologists were always these almost cartoonishly evil cultists with only very few exceptions over the entire franchise so them going even crazier is rather fitting but its also a bit sad to see some of the diaries of the ones that didnt go crazier and see that most of them were just desperate for existential significance as most of them realise that maybe their religion was false this entire time (it obviously doesnt justify their jihads but it does paint them in a less cartoonishly evil light). Either way, Isaac begins to fear that the moons are manipulating them to find Earth and I enjoy the rising tension between Isaac and Carver as the former wants to destroy the engine to make sure that the moons cant locate Earth while Carver wants to go back and we are lead to believe Isaac is the right one but in an interesting subversion, its revealed that the moons already know where Earth is and are just trying to hinder Isaac and Carver's chance to get to it first and warn everyone. After a few "boss fights" that are clearly Dead Space 2's final boss converted into a regular boss, right down to shooting a marker after killing enough enemies while the boss chases you around slowly, the dual activate the ending, take off into shockspace. Cue the infamous ending we all know by now.

We all have already ranted over the ending of this DLC outright nullifying all struggles of the whole series and officially finishing it all in a rushed downer ending that seems to be trying to be lovecraftian in nature I suppose but its obviously meant to be a hook for Dead Space 4 as I absolutely refuse to believe that Visceral would dare to end the series on this note. We also already know DS 4 was meant to happen with Ellie in the leading role, which could or could not indicate Isaac/Carver are both dead but after DS 3 undersold and Visceral doing some projects that ranged from decent to pretty mediocre, EA closed their doors out of nowhere while they were cooking up as Star Wars game...Tho that does raise a good question about the brand

Would Dead Space 4 have happened if Visceral wasnt shut down ? I legit think not. I could be wrong but it seems EA lost complete interest in the series after DS 3 and they really werent afraid to show it. Could have they changed their minds eventually? Sure but its telling that Dead Space only is "back" thanks to EA needing a nostalgic cash cow to be their answer to Capcom's lucrative Resident evil remakes.

Would have I prefered if Visceral was working on this DS remake ? Sure but I dont think that Visceral would have settled on a remake, they would probably try to persuade EA to instead try to make DS 4 the "RE 7" of the franchise to kickstart back interest. Thats at least my "what if", right now the future is uncertain as one must wonder what is even EA's plan if DS 1 remake makes enough money...will they just remake DS 2 as well or go into a completely new direction? Personally I would prefer if they just went to a new direction so at least this journey isnt so predictable...could it be garbage? For sure and it probably will be but Im willing to at least to give something new a chance. I wish the team behind this remake a shit ton of luck because they absolutely will need it, especially on filling such big shoes, not helping the very negative reputation their parent company have with fans of the brand they are remaking ironically.

I guess I can close this by saying that, even through its lows, Dead Space was still a very delightful ride to come back to and make me seeing that almost nothing from it really need updating, which is kind of an insult to the remake and a compliment to the devs of the originals to create a rather timeless experience. it was a horror series made by horror fans. I can only hope the Dead Space spiritual sucessor carries "the spirit" of the brand to a whole new generation.

Yeah indeed, if I gotta compliment the Co-op of DS 3 is that it TRIED to at least have some psychological terror and to sort of add this element of social distrust over Carver possibly losing his mind to the Marker Signal (we did see that shit happen multiple times through the franchise, usually its just a matter of time.)

didn't someone mention earlier they were going planet cracking the moons ishimura style? it would possibly mean more action than horror, which was EA's goal to begin with so possibly visceral was going in that direction. as for visceral itself, that's mostly on EA too, hardline was damn great but hampered by EA's retarded business decision trying sell it as a mainline game (same way they tried to sell a niche survival horror game to millions of people).
they still don't really give a shit, else they would've done 4. the remake is done to get a new audience so they don't have to deal with all the old games out there (and possibly prefer them more) while banking on it's brand recognition to lure old players in. same way mass effect 3 is the best starting point in the trilogy...

in short, EA can get fucked since only sportsball are dumb enough to still give them money for sub-par games, and even that seems to slowly stop.

They making the game look darker and more yellowish tint, like Deus Ex Human Revolution, compared to the original.

Seeing that sends my world building autism into overdrive. Why would the Ishimura invest in lights that barely light up the whole room and why would those lights have that yellowish tint? That's not a very comfortable kind of lighting to live in and it would drive the inhabitants inside insane given that it doesn't do a good job illuminating the interior in the first place. I get they want to make the remake look more dramatic and darker, but the whole point of designing the Ishimura during the development cycle was so that not only would it be a creepy and atmospheric level to roam around in, but it also made sense from a interior design point of view.

EA got rid of all the competent game developers and it's par for the course at this time.

The original game does make sense in ho the lightening was done. It was to make it look like a normal station.

They showed off a bunch of early alpha stuff today, and while I'm still wary of how it's turning out, it does feel like they're trying to do a good job and keep the game spooky.

Low res screenshot I found, wish I had better.

It looks a bit brighter, but the new lighting engine looks good.

Still cautiously optimistic until proven otherwise.

On one hand, I hate EA and loathe them for what they did to Visceral and Dead Space in general.

But on the other, this doesn't seem like a quick cash grab. It seems like they are really trying here, and with good results.

I'll be watching a little closer for more updates like this, but they are surprisingly on the right track.

I know it's early pre-production but it'd be nice if they make the effort to add the little things the original had, like how Isaac's head would turn and look where you're pointing the camera (unless it was at an angle your neck naturally can't turn to). The walking looks...wonky. Suit also kind of looks a bit chunkier; or Isaac got some sick gains.
I gotta admit, the Necromorph and the dismemberment looks damn good.

Some details from the stream:

-Gunner Write returns to voice Isaac, but he'll only speak when interacting with other characters.
-The dismemberment system is divided into two parts, stripping away the flesh to expose the bone, and breaking the bone to cut the limb off (dangling is a possibility if some flesh remains). You'll need to target the exposed bone to cut the limb, shooting anywhere else will only damage the flesh.
-This system provides utility for weapons like the pulse rifle and flamethrower, both can rapidly expose bones.
-To accommodate the DS2 zero-g mechanics, some areas will be redesigned to make better use of the mobility.
-The story will follow the main beats of the original, but will give more insight into other characters like Nicole.
-They reiterated that stuff like the anime and sequels will be referenced in the remake to some extent.

All in all, some good stuff here. Happy to see them interact with the community, wish more developers did that.

Yeah I’m actually a really big fan of the dismemberment mechanics. I’m still
not sold on the lighting because the sources are placed in impractical areas and it makes the ship look kind of fake. But I’ll stay open minded and maybe that’s just one level I’m kind of iffy on.

See, I knew I shouldn't have been so lazy and actually watched everything they put up instead of some highlights twitter was trying to force feed me.

Good, we don't need a Metroid Other M situation where he's talking constantly, but some feedback on his part instead of awkward silence when talked at might be nice.

So long as this doesn't lead to enemies requiring more hits needlessly, sounds great. Love me some good damage feedback.

Just don't pad stuff that doesn't need padding. The story doesn't need a 3 hour explanation that Nicole killed herself.

Are they going to remove the turret sections in the remake?
Not if they're going to follow the original plot, but they might tweak those sections with the feedback they're getting.

I don't mind the idea of them, and I actually like the second section, but the first one needs to be toned down a bit.

I like the bulkier suit design, it contrasts the slender Advanced Suit from DS2 and brings real-life design philosophy to tech design. This was in the originals too, look at the contrast between the Ishimura and the Sprawl

Getting Wright onboard is a step in the right direction…..remaining cautiously optimistic.

The lights are brighter as seen in the medical bay. Ship is on power reserves

Doesn't seem like a complete disaster so far, which for a modern EA game is high praise. I know some people are flipping out over Isaac talking but as long as it's not like a Sony game where he's Marvel quipping every 5 seconds I'm fine with it.

I honestly like the idea of Isaac talking to Hammond and Kendra, him reacting to the two fighting and possibly being swayed by one or the other is intriguing.

Isaac “talking” to “Nicole” also has potential.
