Dead Space Thread

Is that the latest trend these days? I mean if that's all they fuck around with, ill be glad, but pretending it doesn't happen isn't going to make the problem go away. I hope they have a half way decent writer.

Wonder if it was a subtle fuck you to EA by torpedoing the franchise.

It was a subtle fuck you to EA. They even trooned out the armor with garbage like the arctic suit and most of isaac's armor. The majority of players wear the N7 suit for good reason.

I like Extraction too, though it's a travesty how unused, and even misused, the characters were afterwards. Weller should've survived 2's DLC and been Isaac's partner in 3, not Carver. And killing off Sam like they did sucked ass, he was cool.

That ending was bullshit. Gabe made isaac look weak but he had a stupid cause of death considering he was wearing miltary grade space armor.

I can see why Visceral mercy killed this franchise after the one hit wonder of 2. At least dead space didn't suffer the same fate of halo and other beloved franchises with losing its identity and meaning. At least not immediately.

This remake is real apparently and also REEKS of being Pozzed.

Same here, I legit prefer the vanilla ending with Isaac and Carver possibly sacrificing themselves to destroy the brother moon and save Earth for the time being with even the implication Isaac could still be alive despite all (dude is a survivor afterall).

Awakening kind of ends the whole franchise on a cliffhanger/downer ending. Its clear they wanted to setup Dead Space 4 but given how, unlike the previous two entries, a sequel to this one wasnt practically guaranteed, it was ultimately a stupid move.

Isaac went from taking down lovecraftian gods in the vanilla ending to being a total failure at stopping them in Awakened.
I actually like the awakening ending more, but maybe that's just because I'm a big cosmic horror fan and that ending makes it clear that despite all his efforts, Isaac was never truly in control.

I dont mind it if it didnt feel kind like an asspull, ya know? To the point I think it was almost all meant to be a marker vision of the future or something like that to tease a Dead Space 4. Its like if Mass Effect 2 ended with the Reapers already at Earth when Shepard and crew return from the Collectors base, not only it wouldnt make sense but just say that its "cosmic horror" feels like its trying to cover holes.

I thought that the direction they were going for for dead space 4 was something like this: "It's done. Show's over. Humanity lost. You, the main character, must try to fuck off the planet with what and who you can carry while humanity is dying with a horrifying weep. And pray thet you're insignificant enough that they won't come after you.

I figured that it would be Ellie trying to find a way to stop the Brother Moons from harvesting future cycles.

Humanity would be pretty much fucked in the long term, but new species could have a chance to not be doomed.

Dead Space doesn't need a remake, period. I replayed it just a few months ago and still holds up beautifully. It is not a perfect game but it is one of the best of its genre and generation. It is widely available on PC and easy to run on current hardware and whatever technical issues it has are an easy fix away. This is nothing but a cash grab and just being reminded that EA destroyed Viceral makes me certain I won't be playing this remake. Just get the original on GOG and download the .exe so you can have it before EA decides to memory hole it so people are force to play the remake.

I always said that the premise basically was "Mass Effect 3 but with Brother Moons instead of Reapers" which I have mixed feelings towards. Apparently we would have been able to use the planet crackers as improvised weapons against the moons (oddly fitting if you ask me). The fact we control Ellie could be an indication that Clarke and Carver are truly dead (or maybe it will be a twist later on when they return). I also thought to myself "I swear, if by the end of DS 4 we meet with some sort of avatar of the Moons and have to choose between destroying, controlling or fusing with them, Im gonna fucking flip!"

My understanding is that if they were going to make another one, it would essentially be a horror Battlestar Galactica . With a flotilla of survivor ships trying to survive and find a place free of necromorphs.

The wiki page has some pretty interesting tidbits. They would have gone more into the origins of the necromorphs, Ellie would likely be the main character, they were thinking of making it non linear, and it was hinted that while it was possible to stop the necromorphs , there may be some unintended consequences. " Sometimes, you are better off with the devil that you knew."

Remember how crazy the 1st one was with all the side comics, animated movie, and novels? They Probably dont have to, but it would be interesting to see them do at least one of those for the remake.

It's sadly defunct, but they even had this whole point and click storyline ARG website. It was following some poor bastard who barricaded himself in the med bay on the Ishimura and a remote outpost that received the distress calls but were killed by earthgov to keep it from leaking. https://deadspace.fandom.com/wiki/No_Known_Survivors

I bet the remake is gonna kill off Issac and replace him with a living Nicole. With good writing it could work, this series is no stranger to killing its protagonists. But it would be dicey.

I get why a lot of people hated Dead Space 3, but I personally enjoyed it solely because I loved the narrative of Dead Space 1 and 2. Gun play also wasn't half bad it just didn't fit in a resident evil inspired game.

At the very least the marker had a satisfying conclusion to its mystery and it explained enough that it left me content, but also speculative about the marker's origin. Also the alien ruins was hands down my favorite area in the franchise.

I need to finish 3. I made the mistake of trying to play it my first time with a coop partner who got sick of it when we accidentally ended up playing too many side missions instead of the main story.

Ironically you just pointed out a problem with Dead Space 3. The side missions feel like an excuse to motivate co-op stuff because its more fun to do that stuff with a buddy but that also can get a bit tedious since you want to progress but you also NEED that materials...

At least Resident Evil 5 kept a constant flow of narrative and thus a sense of progress

They making the game look darker and more yellowish tint, like Deus Ex Human Revolution, compared to the original.

They’ll probably ditch or edit what made me love the universe and characters, specifically Isaac who is a favourite of mine among video game protagonists.

From the slight details in the first game to the banter in the second, he’s a damn good character. First of all he’s got a slight hunch, a reward for a lifetime of backbreaking labour and the journal entries for each mission, an overlooked feature which develop a mute character pretty well. He’s bitter, his mom blew his college funds on Unitology and he ended up with a lesser education as a result, his career is stagnating and he’s pushing 50. It’s very clear that the only thing that made Isaac happy was Nicole and he encouraged her to do a tour of duty on that doomed ship…..

It’s why the self-harm angle is critical to the first two games, Isaac sees the other “survivors” mutilating and killing themselves in DS1 and he’s got no way of knowing that it could be his future, when the Nicole reveal is done and the Hive Mind is dead Isaac’s true torment begins.

Throughout DS2 Isaac struggles with his guilt, it’s killing him and the Marker preys on the weakness, appearing as a mutilated Nicole which is probably a creation of Isaac’s mind. He never found her body and she was more than likely amongst the hordes he cut down. The poor guy probably prefers to imagine her as a corpse then as one of the abominations.

“Nicole” is every negative thought made manifest, every insecurity, weakness and shred of guilt made flesh. She even jeers him after a dementia-induced suicide attempt. While he fights through the Sprawl Isaac goes through the phases of grief, and it’s when he forms a small group of survivors that he has his “upward turn”and Nicole disappears, it’s only when he’s alone that she returns and he finally comes to terms with her loss, through a boss fight no less.

The Marker destroyed, Isaac sits down. Accepting of his fate, but he is ultimately rescued by Ellie and it’s very clear that this ending represents his “second chance” in the first game’s ending Isaac is alone with the haunting memory of the woman he loved, in the second he is alone with a woman who could be what he lost, something to live for.

Fuck EA if they tamper with this wonderful story.

While I'll agree 1 was scarier, the environment and atmosphere for 2 felt better for me. Something about going through areas that should clearly be massively populated but are desolate fucks me up.
The first Dead Space was:

Going through area, get gun, shoot necro
- get on the train to new area -
morphs, complete objective get new
- get on the train to new area -
gun, new necromorph, is this
- get on the train again to brand new area that looks the same -
all going to continue be like this?

Not in that rapid of a succession of course but they were trying to mask a level/mission based game as something with more variety and freedom than it had. DS2 actually delivered on the environments and was open about its linearity. DS1 was a fine game but it annoyed me, the presentation was evocative of a horror Metroid Prime in a way but it was certainly not a game like that.

I get that DS2 has a far superior range of areas. It was deffo an upgrade and had a lot more variety.

Maybe because I tried to play ds1 a number of times, the areas in the first few chapters are more stuck in my mind. There was an underlying sense of dread there that wasn't matched by ds2. I still prefer the delineation of the set chapters, it created better set pieces for me even if they level design is inferior.
