I understand that a lot of places, even in more rural areas have utility districts that aren't directly city related, and they're the ones bills get paid to. I imagine that they'll need to stop by and turn the electricity back on, if it was ever shut off.

With the dangerously unsanitary condition of Chris' house, his taint piercing, his constantly deteriorating health, and his financial condition, I'm genuinely concerned for Chris' life here. I have a hard time believing he'll be alive ten years from now.

It's honestly luck of the draw at this point. He might drop dead at 30, he might live out his medical life expectancy (which, admittedly, probably isn't so promising at this point either), or maybe somewhere in between. His circumstances have a lot to do with it, but above all it's just down to chance.

I think that's SOP during a fire, it would make sense when you think about it water and electricity are never the best of bed fellows.

You know I really hope that whoever they have got to do this, at least puts some effort into it and makes sure the place it at least livable as I don't wish to see OPL's health decline any more.

I suppose if a ween wanted to, he could call them up and express his concern about the Chandler residence, but whether or not they do anything about it is another question. Skyraider has expressed his doubts. Since an inspector is required to sign off on the repairs anyhow (I assume sometime soon), it wouldn't make any sense to harass their office any further.

A ween will call. There's no doubt about that.

The problem is that the building inspector doesn't care. No one who could actually help the Chandlers cares about their well-being. The Chandlers are not a pressing concern for the community -they're crazy, but at least they're reclusive. There are far worse low-lives in the County, for sure. Hell, out-of-towners making phone calls about 14 Branchville Court must eat up more of the county's time than the Chandlers themselves.

Good to know that Chris will die soon, unless he doesn't.

I can't imagine that the second floor would be very stable after the fire, especially since that's where water (remember, there was heavy snow around February) accumulated and undoubtedly started to rot the floor, but I'm not so sure how MUCH damage it would do. Would Chris fall through the floor if he tried to go up there, or is it not to that point yet?

The floors are definitely not at that point. Contractors were certainly on the second floor in the past eight months, and they aren't exactly string beans -one of them would have already fallen through if the floor was that bad.

Seems like the smart play is for them to just stop paying the mortgage, let the bank seize the property, and find a cheap apartment to rent with their tugboat monies.

I'm sorry if I'm late, but do we know what's going to happen next?

How long is the rental house going to be paid for, and what's going to happen if they aren't able to move back in to 14 BC? I feel un-easy for the Chandler family and seeing them be so irresponsible with their money just makes me want to smack some sense in to them.

Skyraider91 has been very comprehensive in updates.

The short version: September 22 was believed to be the last day the Chandlers would stay in the rental on State Farm's dime -this may only be an estimate.

It is known that 14 Branchland Court is being renovated, and the Chandlers expect to return soon. The house will be in terrible shape, but "good enough" for the slack standards of rural Virginia.

That un-ease is normal, but there's really nothing to be done. The Chandlers, and anyone in a position to help the Chandlers, will take the path of least resistance. It's easier for Barb to get back to the hoard now, and it's easier for Greene County to let the Chandlers move back in rather than do more paperwork to ensure their safety.

It would be a tragic end to the cautionary tale already unfolding of what happens with a combination of bad parenting, excessive hoarding, incredible laziness and stubbornness, and unrestrained ego. I'm not even A-logging here.
I still can't believe how lucky they were to survive the fire unharmed (I guess Chris' irregular sleep pattern saved their asses there). I doubt in a similar circumstance they will be more lucky in the future.

Yeah, especially since they clearly aren't concerned with the hit they'd suffer to their credit by letting the bank seize the house. Seriously, I hope they do this. It'll give them the chance to get the ruined house and the hoard out from under them, and they can find something simple and cheap for the little time Barb likely has left. Then when she's gone, Chris can spend his tugboat on a small apartment for himself and his vidya/LEGO and try to live something of a decent, quiet life without Barb's influence. He'd have to pay for everything up front in cash for the rest of his life, but even then it'd likely be better than what he's got going on now…

Or he can live up to all expectations.

Wouldn't Barb rather live in a newer house? Or rent an apartment?

No, because she's a fucking hoarder. To her, the house IS part of the hoard. It's familiar, it's comfortable. She doesn't give a damn if its unsanitary and basically unlivable, damnit, its her house! So yeah, just from what I've seen with other middle aged hoarders in my life, I have no doubt she'll use Chrissun to haul all of her shit out of storage and pile it up in plastic bins around the burnt out remains of her domicile. Maybe next time the firefighters, police or paramedics need to get in, they'll find their entrance blocked by boxloads of second hand crap from Goodwill.

Don't forget the HSN boxes, HSN preys on hoarders

Oh, I completely agree. I absolutely hate Goodwill, HSN, and dollar stores because they pretty much exist solely to prey on middle aged women with hoarding tendencies. Its bloody exploitative.

Chris started the fire by trying to use the Keurig in the middle of the night. If he was on a normal sleep pattern, he would have started the fire during daylight hours, which would have probably made it easier for the firefighters to deal with.

I can't imagine this is the best solution, financially. Their mortgage has to be old enough that they have a decent amount of equity in the house. Selling it as-is, below market value, should still let them pay off the mortgage and walk away with some cash. Letting the bank seize the house would just throw away what they've paid off on the mortgage so far.

Ha, look at us, discussing their finances like they're rational people.
