Seven people remained unaccounted for a day after an explosion at a warehouse storing fireworks in Northern California, the authorities said on Wednesday.

A fire broke out in the warehouse just after 6 p.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, Cal Fire, the state’s firefighting agency, said in a statement on Wednesday. The fire triggered an enormous pyrotechnics display along with flames and smoke in a largely rural area of Esparto, Calif., about 30 miles northwest of Sacramento, officials said.

Officials did not immediately give any information about injuries but said that multiple structures were on fire. A cause was still unknown on Wednesday.

Cal Fire said that while the fireworks warehouse was “owned by an active pyrotechnic license holder,” investigators would work to determine whether all of its operations were in line with license requirements.

“This type of incident is very rare,” Cal Fire said in its statement.

When firefighters arrived on Tuesday evening, they found “numerous explosions and numerous wildfires throughout the area,” Curtis Lawrence, the chief of the Esparto Fire Protection District, said at a news conference on Tuesday night. The fires covered about 80 acres, he said, adding that firefighters had those under control while crews battled the main blaze.

“The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area,” the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday night. The Sheriff’s Office urged people to avoid the area for at least several days.

The Sheriff’s Office announced a one-mile evacuation zone around the warehouse and urged people to avoid the area. The evacuation order remained in effect on Wednesday afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Office said that it was not “investigating anything criminal at this time,” and added that the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s arson and bomb unit was taking the lead in the investigation.

A joint statement from the city of Marysville, the city of Yuba City, Sutter County and Yuba County identified the operator of the warehouse as Devastating Pyrotechnics. The company’s website and social media accounts did not appear to be active on Wednesday afternoon and company officials could not be reached for comment.

The fireworks for the joint Yuba-Sutter region’s Fourth of July celebration were destroyed, according to the statement, which noted that “honoring those affected” by the explosion was the top priority. Devestating Pyrotechnics had been “a trusted partner” and a “cherished part” of past firework celebrations, according to the statement.

“This tragic incident is a sobering reminder of the many hands behind the scenes who help create joy for others,” the statement said.

Can't be the only one that thought of this?
The real thing is actually crazier
I got stuck in traffic watching this one cook off in SC awhile back.

The only Fireworks facility I encountered professionally was when the Grucci Family facility went Thermonuclear out on the East end of Long Island. That looked more like the aftermath of the Beruit explosion. The factory compound mostly vaporized and no unbroken windows in a 2 mile radius. There really wasn't much fire to fight. My team was going door to door in the nearby neighborhoods looking for people injured by glass.

There are some fireworks factories in the US. But they mostly make the really big stuff used for commercial fireworks shows. There aren't a lot of consumer retail manufacturers in the US anymore. They tend to be made in China or Mexico.

are they showing how to use it as a magazine, or modify it so the lid closes on its own for storing shells during a hand light shoot?
i dont think they would approve anything that can be carried away as a storage magazine and i dont know if you could fit the required clasps on a job box.

but you dont need a magazine to get into 1.3, we have been doing shows for around 15 years and just got storage a few years ago, you just have to pick it up on the day of your shoot and shoot it all,or return any extra (aka shoot it all)

or look into 1.4 pro, basically 1.3 shells that you can store wherever but you need "training" to buy them, a large amount of our show is now 1.4 pro

I was going to attempt to do this, but my issue is I live in a community and don’t have an open field or acreage, so I figured I would have been shot done. Got as far as the finger print process and purchased a video to show how to properly fill the forms out correctly. Would the 1.4 pros have cakes? I’m not big into mortors myself. I live right next to an enormous park which would be perfect for lighting off cakes. I could genuinely go to some place that deals with 1.3 and just buy them and whatever I don’t use I just return? I live like 2 hours away from at least 3 or 4 suppliers and had I known that I wouldn’t have even bothered with that shit.

yea you can get cakes in 1.4 pro, here is a link from a 10 sec google.
they are more limited then what you can get with 1.3 but are pretty good.

though my favorite cake is the 36 shot 2 inch 4sec salute cakes, you can really feel them in your chest. we shoot 2 in our finale
something like this. but its 1.3 obviously

yea you can get 1.3 license without storage, you need what is called a contingency letter.
you usually just get one from your distributor, it just says code123 can store shit in my storage if shit hits the fan.
but you never use it because you should just shoot everything unless you get rained out hard or something.

you also need a state license for your state ontop of your atf 1.3 license, but thats just a open book test in my state, others might be harder.

Thank you very much for this amazingly helpful information!!

Here is live footage of the explosion.
Reminds me of a case near me at the time : basically a welder didn't have firewatcher, and a fire started, and lit off an entire shipping container of fireworks. This BASICALLY turned it into a rocket with all the pressure going out one end, sending it a mile before landing on a freeway.

FUNNILY ENOUGH NOBODY DIED, but mass firework explosions are no joke. Not that its unclear that its dangerous, but still

REALLY wish I could find the article but it was maybe 15 years ago. Sadly that didn't have a video of it, most it has was the charred husk of the container on the freeway IIRC.

The most surprising thing is there was an operational fireworks factory in the US.

I don't think I've ever set off an American firework, and I've set off a shit ton of them.

Wonder what it was a cover for. Meth lab? Weapons pipeline to foreign countries? Mysterious.
It's not a factory, it's a warehouse.

I used to help my town set up their 4th of July show. The fireworks are made in China, but, once you buy them?

Someone's gotta ship, store, and set them up for individual shows. (and have the HAZMAT and blasting licenses to do so).

For the 5 days it took to set up? We had a 53' foot semitrailer serving as our storage that we'd have to get the boxes out of. It was tagged and placarded as you'd expect. And under the law? Qualified as a powder magazine.
