Seven people remained unaccounted for a day after an explosion at a warehouse storing fireworks in Northern California, the authorities said on Wednesday.

A fire broke out in the warehouse just after 6 p.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, Cal Fire, the state’s firefighting agency, said in a statement on Wednesday. The fire triggered an enormous pyrotechnics display along with flames and smoke in a largely rural area of Esparto, Calif., about 30 miles northwest of Sacramento, officials said.

Officials did not immediately give any information about injuries but said that multiple structures were on fire. A cause was still unknown on Wednesday.

Cal Fire said that while the fireworks warehouse was “owned by an active pyrotechnic license holder,” investigators would work to determine whether all of its operations were in line with license requirements.

“This type of incident is very rare,” Cal Fire said in its statement.

When firefighters arrived on Tuesday evening, they found “numerous explosions and numerous wildfires throughout the area,” Curtis Lawrence, the chief of the Esparto Fire Protection District, said at a news conference on Tuesday night. The fires covered about 80 acres, he said, adding that firefighters had those under control while crews battled the main blaze.

“The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area,” the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday night. The Sheriff’s Office urged people to avoid the area for at least several days.

The Sheriff’s Office announced a one-mile evacuation zone around the warehouse and urged people to avoid the area. The evacuation order remained in effect on Wednesday afternoon.

The Sheriff’s Office said that it was not “investigating anything criminal at this time,” and added that the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s arson and bomb unit was taking the lead in the investigation.

A joint statement from the city of Marysville, the city of Yuba City, Sutter County and Yuba County identified the operator of the warehouse as Devastating Pyrotechnics. The company’s website and social media accounts did not appear to be active on Wednesday afternoon and company officials could not be reached for comment.

The fireworks for the joint Yuba-Sutter region’s Fourth of July celebration were destroyed, according to the statement, which noted that “honoring those affected” by the explosion was the top priority. Devestating Pyrotechnics had been “a trusted partner” and a “cherished part” of past firework celebrations, according to the statement.

“This tragic incident is a sobering reminder of the many hands behind the scenes who help create joy for others,” the statement said.

I really hope those missing and unaccounted for were illegal immigrants.

7 of the most marginalized immigrants of color who just wanted to care for their kids, gave their lives for the chud holiday of ford super duty drivers. (Avram start the montage of the kids crying.)

(It's always with the "heckin immigrantarinos take care of their kids so lovingly" when they never talk that way about white people/kids and hate kids anyway except as offerings to the alphabets)

Ignoring the big pieces of debris that landed in the pool... would being underwater protect you from the explosion's shockwave?
I'm not sure that's an appropriate comparison though. An explosion in the water will necessarily propagate the shock wave through the water. On the other hand you have an explosion in the air near incompressible water in this case.
I am not well versed enough of the mathematics to give a certain answer but I think the water wouldn't be of much help against the shockwave of the explosion. That force of the blast when it hits the water is going to find a much slower speed of sound and that deceleration will cause a force that is acting through your body. I would put more faith in just running away on your own two legs from the burning pile of kaboom than trying to shelter in an above ground pool right next to it.

I hope everyone was blown to safety

When I saw the original footage, I first thought of everyone that lost their lives in the explosion.

Then the sparkles happened. Best "Grand Finale" of all time, good luck topping it tonight East Coast, West Coast best coast

Being in water would be much worse protection from a shockwave than not. This is the very theory used for dynamite fishing. To test this theory put your head within 2 feet of someone and ask them to clap as hard as they can - you’ll be annoyed by the loud sound. Now put your head into a sink full of water and have someone smack the water with one hand and you’ll find the effects of compression.

Laying down perpendicular to a blast is the most effective protection as the force over square inches exposed is less than running away providing more surface area to be affected.

I guess somebody couldn't wait to celebrate independence day with fireworks and said fuck it and went for canada day instead. Indoors

Speaking of which, my idiot neighbor managed to fire off a roman candle at the wrong angle in his yard, fired it straight through an upstairs window and nearly burned his house down on canada day. Makes me wonder if some idiot handled something in a stupid way at the warehouse and caused this whole thing
July 1 will always be Dominion Day in my heart. Fuck this "Canada Day" -- they even move the holiday to a Monday so people get a long weekend, which shows how fucking important the anniversary of Canada's formation is to the maudit government.

There's a reason they say not to tap on the glass at the aquarium.

What's a barely detectable 'tic' to you? Sounds like a sledgehammer to the cranium to the fish.

It's also why depth charges don't have to score a direct hit to disable/destroy a submarine.
