What's frustrating about this is they make this a class issue and say you're classist if you have a negative opinion of self-diagnosis. Except... Publicly funded community mental health exists. Don't have insurance? That's cool, they'll help you get it or treat you for free. Can't drive? A social worker will pick you up. Some schools have psychology clinics staffed by grad students to train them and they're usually practically free.
There are still going to be some people who will have a hard time getting to a mental health professional for legitimate reasons, but it's not some kind of thing that's only available to the wealthy. But I guess that doesn't give you oppression points on the Internet.
To be honest, I have no idea how it works in the U. S. of A. but from what I've heard it can be difficult if you live in a rural area or are below the poverty line.
Apart from that, what I think the reason a some teens with legit issues aren't getting help say is that their parents won't let them.
Which is legitimate in my opinion, knowing how many middle aged people don't "believe in" depression and think vaccines cause autism.
Other adults think therapy is for completely deranged psychopaths and its super shameful to see one.
OR "Nah billy your homicidal urges are totally normal. I had em too when I was your age"
Unfortunately a lot of these teens also use these things as an excuse to not TRY HARDER to get help. It sucks shit, sure, but your health is your health. Be grateful that in this age people are actually talking about mental illness and not just blowing their brains out at 35 because they thought alcohol could solve all their problems.
