The major obstacle that people raging against fiat currency face is one in adapting it to the current economy. At current market value, there is not enough gold in the entire world to back even the American economy, let alone the combined product of the entire world. The whole economy would have to shrink back to 19th century levels of prosperity, which is an obviously undesirable outcome.

The other problem of currencies backed by gold or other metals is their inconvenience. Try going to a supermarket with a satchel of gold coins, let alone buying a car or a home. In this age of electronic banking, the entire world's supply of gold would merely sit in vaults for eternity while electronic exchanges of wealth would proceed more or less the way they do now... So what's the point?
