Andrew Torba / Gab (Gab.com / Gab.ai) / Dissenter (dissenter.com) - An incompetent captain sinking millions of other people's dollars.

This whole thing is so weird. Everything that Torba does just seems off to me, not incompetent off(which he is), but like there's way more to this story than what we're seeing. There are parts of his website that are still functioning.

The answer is that he's been making money off the thing and that goes into directly into the United Torba Autism Fund.

The ignoring of @Null and countless others by Andrew Torba may just be a 26-dimensional backgammon game by Torba to wait for Gab to get shut down, Streisand Effecting it more attention, only to get it back up with shit he actually already has planned, but didn't tell anyone about.

Because no way did this "Gab comeback" come to pass so quickly. No way did Torba find enough people to help him on such short notice.

Depends. How much money is he sitting on? (I'm assuming that contingency plans weren't already in place, since if he'd had appropriate backups he'd have rolled them and been back up in minutes/hours.)

Charlie Nash from Breitbart talk of the double-standard about Gab and Twitter. https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018...s-of-death-threats-from-mail-bombing-suspect/

Twitter allowed Cesar Sayoc, the man who allegedly sent apparent bombs to public figures around the country this month, to post more than 240 threats towards 50 different people on its social network without sanction. Meanwhile, the media managed to temporarily force free speech social network Gab offline after it was revealed that the Tree of Life Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting suspect had an account on the platform.
According to CNN, an analysis discovered that “Sayoc tweeted more than 240 threats directed to at least 50 public officials, news organizations and media personalities.”

“The threats, and Twitter’s apparent inaction regarding them, raise new questions regarding social media and radicalization,” CNN declared, adding, “In this instance, Twitter may well have provided Sayoc with the material that radicalized him, and then it stood idly by as that radicalization led to hundreds of threats.”

Some of Sayoc’s threats reportedly included, “Your Time is coming,” “Your days are over,” “your (sic) next,” and “Hug your loved ones real close everytime U leave your home,” while he also sent pictures of decapitated goats to users.

CNN’s report did not include all of Sayoc’s targets on Twitter. Sayoc tweeted violent images of man-eating crocodiles to liberal Fox News contributor Rochelle Ritchie, a fact mysteriously left out by CNN, which instead focused on anti-Trump celebrity Kathy Griffin, who admitted she hadn’t even read the threat tweeted to her.

Free speech social network Gab, however, was forced offline this week after media outlets and figures blamed the platform for allowing Tree of Life Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting suspect Robert Bowers to make anti-Semitic comments on his account — where Bowers also made several posts attacking President Trump and the MAGA movement, which he perceived as Jewish.

Hah, Alt Right Tankie. I thought I was the only one that knew about him. Definite lolcow. The absolute worst youtuber ever, he stumbles over his speech so comically. Just pick a random video, he can't talk worth shit. Totally low quality. Laughably pathetic individual.

He's also on twitter.

I opened a troll account on gab months ago that I basically forgot about until I logged in a few weeks back. He had send me dozens of messages with links to his videos, desperately trying to get my attention for some reason. I really regret not taking more screen grabs/archives of Gab users when I had the chance.

I think more research on this guy needs to be done. He's trying so hard to be a youtube racist intellectual and he can barely string together a sentence. It's so fucking adorable.

Yep. The response is simply coordinated, like the original article that started Gamergate on. It's a tactic to convince people the reason is good, as people look at what other people are doing to evaluate things.

So this is well out of my pay grade, what would it take to make an actual decentralized Twitter/YouTube/Facebook that couldn't be dropped with a single point of failure? An actually accessible one, I mean, not one hiding in a corner of the Tor network. Assume that profit isn't a motive for the sake of discussion; there's no escaping a vulnerability to people brigading advertisers/payment processors.

It already exists. Just doesn't seem to be much demand for that kind of stuff.

There's mastodon. Though it's apparently infested with sjws for some reason.

On Gab, I specifically remember hearing people, during the loli "dialogue" for them to "fuck off back to Mastadon"; does that sound about right?

edited because I don't word good

Gab is for Nazis who got banned from twatter and Mastodon is for SJWs too triggered to be on it.

So I actually started looking into it because a few big bitcoin personalities got banned from Twitter for posting the Navy Seal copypasta, and a bunch of those people fucked off and made their own Mastodon instance. I'm doing some research on it now. Apparently the SJW infestation is really mostly just the mastodon.social node, and if you have your own instance/node/server/whatever-the-fuck-you-want-to-call-it, you get to set your own rules. I mean if you were so inclined you could even make a /pol/ node. But every node does have the opportunity to block another entire node.

The big question is whether mastodon.social has the power to force all nodes to block a specific node. It doesn't make sense that they would, since that defeats the purpose of being decentralized and federated.

So maybe it's not all that infested as long as you stay away from .social? I'm not sure yet, further study required.

So it's just as susceptible to forming echo chambers and is, as of yet, not large or streamlined enough to attract a standard audience or warrant censorship by (((them))). Noted. Pass.

I just tend to have a hardon for distributed computing. Bitcoin, Torrent, Tor, IRC. They tend to be the most actually censorship resistant.

That said there's not a social network or software suite on the planet that isn't going to allow you to build an echo chamber. There's one feature needed for that, and it's just a block button. A block button for entire servers, as well as a server-wide server block button that only an admin can access I think?, is an interesting idea.

Freenet was also very good for secure, more or less indestructible content, so long as the entire network wasn't destroyed. The problem is it was so obfuscated nobody would ever use it. If you could have something that either operated on top of the normal Internet like that or a cheap, ubiquitous mesh networking box that bypassed the Internet entirely, you could have all the applications currently available on the Internet in exchange for a moderate performance hit.

My theory is most people don't want echo chambers. They love to troll others. They love to feel offended and virtue signal. Social media is just a bunch of internet posturing and you can't do it if everyone is on your side.

It's why Gab sucked. Everyone on that site wished they were on Twitter trolling. Mastodon sucks because there is no one for them to get offended by. People love yelling at others online because they can't do it in real life.

Sites that turn into echo chambers die. Take SomethingAwful and NeoGaf for instance. They craved searching out members that didn't support their ideology and calling for their ban. But once all those people left, they became boring. Even ResetEra threads only seem to get active when someone runs in and says the wrong thing.

Gab would have done better if it was a smaller operation run by people who knew what the fuck they were doing instead of some businessman who kept making stupid decisions like trying to go with big webhosting providers, especially in the wake of the whole Daily Stormer deplatforming.

I'd be more concerned about the free speech ramifications from this because just like Charlottesville you're gonna be hearing about this for at least another year minimum.
Best words in this thread. It will be this, if not worse, as to speech.

But Daily Stormer is still a functional site, and AAnglin is a legitimately funny writer, even if you disagree with his neon-nazi schtick.

Gab never had any decent content creators, and I bet they ran anybody close to decent off by taking their machines down and giving all data possible to doj/fbi/homeland.

It has been funny to watch a marketeer faggot, that can't code or admin, gleefully crater his entire business, in real time.

I don't get whats to stop them from hosting the site on their own hardware or renting shit in some trashcan country where no one cares.

Cut the head off the hate speech snake and it grows back. This shit never works well.

If these people are too inept to host by themselves then someone else will step up.

Utter lack of talent. Seriously.
