Gab's US Web Traffic has completely crashed. It dropped all the way to #793 when it was ranked around #300 just a month ago

Maybe if they maintained the site people would stay. After Rob got demoted they were doing so good for a while, but it seems like business as usual again.

Frankly it doesn't surprise me at all. I've been working on a Misskey based site and most people I follow on Gab have shown a lot of interest in getting off Gab in favor of it. People are sick of the constant technical bullshit.

Why can't they just freakin pay someone to rewrite their Backend Infrastructure LOL

I actually enjoy the Gab Groups, just wish Gab wasn't so slow and there wasn't crazy rate limiting

Good point mostly, but that begs the question of why Torba wouldn't Federate. Maybe I'm just dense but wouldn't that have done more better than anything?

Also does anyone know why Null seems to be personally offended by Torba's existence? I'm late on his history with the guy but from what I gather it's because he killed his bees, doesn't run his site well and he has an ego.

Because he's had incredible amounts of good will and boomercash thrown at him over several years and instead of using it to create viable alternatives to big tech giants he has fucking wasted it all on awfully programmed catastrophes, all while continuously sperging and larping, making himself and his userbase a laughing stock.

Meanwhile other non-mainstream people can't get anywhere near the amount of capital he has gotten, and their projects and tech alternatives go unfulfilled.

Which at this point seems like the whole reason he got that money. Why would venture capitalists give money to anyone who wanted to change the system they benefit from? A paper-thin controlled opposition is much more valuable than a genuine competitor to the status quo.

They have at least twice, set insane deadlines, and fired them when they couldn't be met.

Their implementation of groups almost singlehandedly make Gab a better experience than Mastodon, Imo. Or, they would if I trusted the administration.

Basically how federation went away was, they rewrote their frontend, and it was so bloated that it dos'd their site, to the point it couldn't stay online. So they went down for an entire week to improve performance. They looked at engagement with the Fediverse, it was somewhere between 1-2%, none of their users were talking to people on other servers (for reasons that were partially Gab's fault) so they decided to cut it to conserve resources.

I'm pretty sure Gab raised all their money through StartEngine, an equity crowdfunding site. I don't think there were any Venture Capitalists involved. (https://archive.is/CIWSi)

Anyone with web hosting experience have a rough guess as to how much it costs to run Gab? I can't imagine with a pretty low amount of active users and volumetric pricing it wouldn't be too much (relatively)

"Active users" isn't really the metric you can judge cost by here. A company with a mission like Gab's has to be in a position to handle the spikes. Their code isn't very good and they're very generous with upload sizes. They also have a video host in addition to the main site. They self-host and when they throw out hardware specs for their server it's insane,

They've put several thousand dollars into their current setup, and more thousands on former hosts.

But that's not what accounts for the majority of their costs. They're a company, and they have 7 employees total right now. All of them are making something like $25K-$30K a year. Torba, Rob, and Fosco probably take a bigger share than that. They have somewhat regular lawyer consultations, that's a drain.

I did the math once and it worked out where they'd have to make about $200K a year to be profitable (they supposedly just went cash flow positive post-2020 Election)

$200K was the price Torba paid for his .com registration.

I can't believe that I will help this piece of trash but I hate Aubrey Cottle even more.
