Ok I get the rebellion part but what does China have against high school romances?
Welp, guess this Chinese animated movie from 2015 was correct.

Cars is a great example FAGGOT.
Nothing produced before the mid 10's is even a good example, as the US animation industry was gutted from top to bottom by progressive advocacy groups (think Women In Animation) during that decade. Producers and execs might be starting to kick and scream over it (see Elio's executive meddling, I think a similar movie out of Pixar was axed entirely too), but the labor pool is near-exclusively progtards now, and has been for some time.
Thread Tax:
Watched Last Exile (steampunk/sci-fi dogfighting show) recently. It was pretty good overall, but something that stuck out to me was that the show's middle third seemed rushed. Gave the impression that the story was written w/ more than 26 episodes in mind, and when that didn't pan out the studio had condense a lot of the plot to make room for the last act.

That was my exact point that he clearly is not willing to engage with. The last twenty years have seen the precipitous drop in quality in Western entertainment, and that is a fact. That's why Nameless One referenced a twenty year old movie, rather than a recent movie, and he knows it. He strikes me as the kind of guy who very much does not want to admit that progressives have absolutely annihilated the American entertainment industry, including our animation, and are very obviously trying to make Japan follow suit. You're already seeing that start to pay dividends; look at Kojima recently announcing that his company openly embraces globalism and DEI. It's still a sign of the degradation that annihilated American entertainment making serious inroads into ruining Japanese entertainment in turn.

Last Exile is ok. I watched it because Range Murata did the character designs, but I didn't really care for it as much as I thought I would because of the rushed story you mentioned. I haven't seen it in a decade though, so my memory isn't the strongest. The aesthetic was fantastic though, it's worth watching just for the experience, if nothing else.

and here's why you don't use CGslop for shows

I never thought I'd see fucking CLIPPING in animu
not much to say about this episode other than it feeling really slow paced, they're not skipping any gore and the fight between GOLAN goons and villagers is accurately brutal (including executing the guy right in front of his daughter) and Major poperly cuts his own head off this time

!!Huge post incoming!!

I had too much time on my hands recently, so I gave almost everything on the seasonal chart the good ole 3 episode test and now I'm here to share my thoughts & impressions since I saw a few people wondering if there were any worthwhile shows this season. To keep my disappointment and RAGE levels to a minimum, I have a self-imposed rule to avoid anything to do with fantasy / isekai / reincarnation and sequels of ongoing stories until there's a confirmed finale. Every season, I like to sort by airdate and go spelunking for gems with minimal information, no trailers or fandom-faggotry necessary.

  • The Good (in no particular order):

Agents of the Four Seasons: Interesting premise of drama, angst, romance, and political intrigue between the anthropomorphized 4 seasons and their retainers. I hate the heroine's retard-tier stuttering but there is a canonical reason why she's like this. Here's a fun sentence: The remaining seasons (characters) will each have their own dedicated season (cour) airing in the corresponding season (IRL time of year).

Oneechan Gokko: Technically from last season since ep1 dropped in January but I liked it enough to include it here. Excellently suspenseful psychological horror. I found the art style & general vibe reminiscent of those Vocaloid MVs of yore, so I looked into the creator and get this: not only is he a “Vocaloid producer” but also this 3-episode anime is based on a previously released MV of his. Keeping an eye out for this one, high hidden gem potential.

Niwatori Fighter: Top kino. Nuff said.

Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!! I hate faggots and this screams "tumblr anime" but I've enjoyed it so far due to lack of blatant faggotry. Sure, Nakamura has a massive crush on Hirose but all I've seen is innocent slapstick romcom bullshit, no butt-fucking fantasies or degen shit in sight. The anime itself looks fantastic with cute designs and seems to be tailor-made to emulate aesthetically pleasing 90's nostalgia even down to the selection of ending songs used.

Yomi no Tsugai: They're still setting up the world & characters after kicking off impressively, so I need to see more of it before I move to Hypetown, Guntama. Explaining how modern technology works to those people never gets old hehe. Desperately needs a stronger OP/ED song combo tho.

Mao: Surprisingly good! I like the air of mystery it has and I have tons of questions so definitely looking forward to the rest. Winner of best OP this season.
:gunt: haara hara haara hara:gunt:

Dandelion: Gintama & Bleach lovechild. Heartfelt and hilarious, though it was jarring seeing characters use smartphones and tablets in one scene and Gameboys in the next. Winner of best ED this season.

PonSuka: Charming & fun show! Super likable charismatic cast. I know the spring season has tons of school anime, but I promise this one’s worth a watch.

Replica datte, Koi wo Suru: I’m a sucker for sappy melodrama so this drew me in. Replica-chan is living her best life while original-chan mopes at home. Why is the original a depressed hikki? I wanna know wha happun.

Nippon Sangoku: KINO ALERT!! Diplomacy in a fractured future Japan. It oozes style.

My Ribdiculous Reincarnation: Taking the piss out of tired isekai tropes to an insane degree. Protag-kun dies at least twice per episode then each reincarnation segment uses fun mixed-media & animation styles made by different creators. Check it out it’s great!

Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? This anime has SOUL. It’s genuinely heartwarming watching both gals hangout & bond with mc-kun, and I’m glad he isn’t being gross about it. GOOD STUFF!

Kami no Shizuku: The wine anime!! I’m having a blast watching this. It has a slight shounen-y edge to it that I could do without, but otherwise it’s been an informative good time learning about different wines.

Awajima Hyakkei: Sentimental multi-generational stories of girls pursuing stardom. The 1st episode blows but the rest is solid drama.

  • The Meh & The Bad:

Kirio Fanclub
: Has its cringe moments but otherwise mostly whacky fun shenanigans. I like the OP's visuals.

Akane-banashi: Amazing 1st episode, mediocre continuation. I know Akane looks up to her father and imitates his Rakugo mannerisms, but I despise the way she strains her voice trying to sound like a cheerful chatty man. Cease this pooner behavior.

Maid-san wa Taberu dake: Accurate title lol. Cute but feels hollow and lacks substance so turn your brain off and look at yummy food. I got mad cravings watching this lmao.

Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi: It's the classic "I-it's not like I l-like u or anything b-b-baka!!" bit dialed up to 11 interspersed with the author’s fetishes.

Needy Girl Overdose: Bought the game last year on Steam but I thought fuck it I'll check this out before playing. Cynical cringe fest that bombards you with overly verbose 3edgy5you preachy as fuck dialogue. It parades itself as a SUPER DEEP We Live In A Society TM intellectual think piece but couldn’t be any shallower. I dropped it faster than you can say Borderline Personality Disorder.

Witch Hat Atelier: Really well made and I dig the art style & music & adorable daughterus but I can't stand the main girl soyjakking at every little thing (seriously watch the OP, she does it 3 times in a row! :0 :0 :0) WAOW WAT MAGICKAL WHIMSY!!! I'll watch it but fuck me I'm not putting up with any sequels.

Tadaima, Ojamasaremasu! Guilty pleasure dumb shoujo slop. Don’t like how it glamorizes being an otaku mega consoomer, like why does the heroine have to own a billion copies of a regular ass novel? And why is she ashamed of being seen owning it by the 2 male love interests when her room is full of otaku merch on display? wut???

Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana: Another one of those cute-girls-getting-drunk anime. Fun fact: the Japanese title is an irregular haiku (7-7-5). I like the way it’s directed, the rough-linework look, and the informative alcohol tidbits, but witnessing Digibro’s downfall gave me PTSD so anything with YuRi uNdErTonEs puts me off in a major way. That, and the main girl’s design being a little too tranny-coded for comfort caused a spike on my Troon-o-meter®, so I looked up the author (a) who turned out to be a terminally online programmer and ex-software engineer. Well well well! He hasn’t trooned out yet but I see a pair of programming socks in his future.

Kill Ao: Assassin ossan gets stung by bio-engineered wasp, physically reverts to age 13. Personally, I’m not a fan of the “young again” trope but this seems like it’s heading in a fun direction. I dig that OP!

Liar Game: I can’t believe how awful this adaptation is, did Madhouse’s Z team work on it? Everyone looks so derpy! I’ve always heard good things about the manga but never got around to reading it, guess now’s a good time to start. Does the male mc have hypothyroidism? Cuz holy shit…
ChinnyChinChin (1).pngChinnyChinChin (2).pngChinnyChinChin (3).pngChinnyChinChin (4).pngChinnyChinChin (5).pngChinnyChinChin (6).png

Candy Caries: Picked this up to screen for bullshit and determine if it was safe to show my niece when she visits. Love the glossy and transparent acrylic look. HOWEVER there was a NIGGER & some brown characters as well so my screening continues, I wanna see just how bad the DEI rot is. I’m not exposing an innocent child to globohomo propaganda.

Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly: Another anime I picked up for my niece. It’s so lackluster and soulless. Oh well, guess we’re watching Cardcaptor Sakura again.

Ramparts of Ice: Oh nooo she got mildly picked on in middle school and now she has a bad case of victim complex and she can’t even omg no1currr get over yourself soon </3

Always a Catch! (Niggatsuri): Boring arranged marriage drama and one girl calling the other Aiiiida a billion times. Aiieeee da!!

Haibara's Teenage New Game+ Oh wow he got another shot at high school how exciting.

Kusunoki's Garden of Gods: Great Value Natsume Yuujinchou except his handwriting expels evil. If this guy was in Witch Hat Atelier he’d be the strongest motherfucker in that world.

Ghost Concert: Missing Songs more like missing braincells. Wtf did I watch? Apparently, society is ruled by an AI which has outlawed singing so all music is now AI generated, and if you DO sing, you’ll become possessed by historical figures (Cleopatra, Nikola Tesla, Tokugawa Iemitsu, among others) whom you can control only if you sing at them good enough. So it’s like Fate but with extra steps lol.

Petals of Reincarnation: Boring chuuni trash. The titular reincarnation refers to reincarnating historical figures’ “talents” to use as your own after killing yourself. Seems like ripping off Fate is en vouge this season.

Marriagetoxin: Seemed like a dumb fun show initially then veered HARD into BnHA quirk territory. Also I can’t stand that crossdressing faggot.

Friends with 2nd Prettiest Girl: Oh wow he befriended a pretty girl how exciting.

Hidarikiki no Eren: Hard to care about Eren or the MC or anyone really. For a show about art it severely lacks in that department. There’s some text in the OP that reads: “To everyone who couldn’t become a genius”. Now why would I waste my time watching that?

Kujima Utaeba Ie Hororo: Baka gaijin bird-creature terrorizes a Japanese family into submitting to his every whim. The premise got old from the get-go and its pathetic attempts at comedy are painfully unfunny. Kujima is unbelievably cringey I hate him so much I want to kill him and turn him into Yakitori skewers.

Ichijouma Mankitsugurashi! You can tell this was made specifically for diehard Otaku consoomers who will buy every piece of merch at least 3 times.

Aishiteru Game wo Owarasetai: Very janky. Another one of those “teasing” anime. Just fuck already, jeez.

The Bloody Mary: This one’s weird, the quips and jokes sound like they were written in English first then translated into Japanese - actually the whole thing has a very DreamWorks feel to it despite the staff being all Japs. For some reason it reminded me of Monster House. Nothing mind-blowing here, though it has a funny bit during an exposition scene where people were moving like how character models from those janky fps games move while smacking stuff with crowbars lol.

Higeki no Genkyou to Naru Saikyou Gedou Last Boss Joou wa Tami no Tame ni Tsukushimasu Season 2: Watched this by accident, the title was way too long so it cut off midway and I couldn’t see the “Season 2” lol.

And that's a wrap!
I’ll catch up with Dorohedoro during the weekend then I’m starting Dr. Stone. After that, I might watch Diamond no Ace if I feel like it.

I don't know what's up with this one. In myanimelist, it lists veterans that have been with madhouse for decades, including the director that directed One Outs, authors other manga. Either they are wrongfully credited and outsourced everything to koreans, or they didn't have time. In any case, they dropped the ball on what could've been classic anime.

I still don't understand how film directors can't adapt his work faithfully
Cosmic horror doesn't work in film because it relies on the reader to fill in the blanks with their own fear of the unknown. Good example is Colour out of Space which you can't actually depict The Colour for shit because the entire point is that you can't ascribe a description to it which makes it unfilmable because the second someone can just look in a movie theater it it's just a normal color. A lot of Lovecraft's work just becomes "Oh god it's the fish-hill-billies" or a sequence where a guy reads a book but it drives him mad when you film it.

While he has had a LOT of bad luck at making it onto film in one piece Junji Ito's work is an example of (near-cosmic) horror that is at least hypothetically filmable because it works in a visual media already without relying on descriptions of how indescribable the horror is.

Just dumping because I have these on hand and it's funny how the inverse works.

I read that one twice over, years apart and completely forgot about it both times until the trailers. Think I got lured by the cover art.
If I remember right the MC's reincarnation is actually true assassin / Hassan

In The Mouth of Madness does cosmic horror very well, but that's really the only example I can think of off the top of my head.

Lovecraft's writing is not particularly visual and relies heavily upon purple prose and internal mindsets of characters, which doesn't translate particularly well to a visual medium like TV or cinema. If you attempted to faithfully adapt Lovecraft's writing style to moving picture shows it would result in a plodding, meandering, mess of a film that was four hours long and nothing really happens.

Event Horizon was a pretty good cosmic horror movie, I've heard.
Event Horizon is definitely decent but it's one of those films that was butchered in editing due to content and so there's like four different versions of it that are all slightly different. So finding the best version is a matter of taste.

Very nice effort post

Well, that took a while to get through because I kept googling the titles, but I appreciate your breakdown of the season. You're obviously a woman so we have pretty different tastes, but I still decided to try a few shows based off of your recommendations, so thank you for writing this out. When I saw that you were having your niece watch Cardcaptor Sakura, I knew you had good tastes overall. I also appreciated a lot of your trash talk; for a few I thought you were exaggerating, then when I went to read the description on My Anime List, it actually sounded worse than you described. I appreciate you taking one for the team.

If you're curious, I picked up:

-Niwatori Fighter (it does look kino)
-Oneechan Gokko (sounds spooky)
-Yomi no Tsugai (I had no idea the chick who wrote FMA wrote this but it sounds good)
-Needy Girl Overdose (I want the edge)
-Petals of Reincarnation (You're watching fags so don't judge me for the chuuni)

I am iffy on Nippon Sangoku. I really do not like awful companies like Amazon having more influence over anime, but it actually sounds pretty interesting so I am conflicted. EDIT: wait Petals of Reincarnation is Amazon too. Damn, they are really going for the anime space, aren't they?

Thanks again.
