One thing that has floored me about Apple Sillicon Macs is that they seem to have even better performance longevity than the Intel ones did. My M2 Pro MBP still kills everything I throw at it.
Yeah, other than having to replace the thermal paste and the battery being on its deathbed (which is to be expected at this point) my MacBook Pro M1 Pro from 2021 handles everything I need it to and then some. Sure it'd be nice to have slightly faster compilation times for when I need to build a native node package but not 4k USD nice.

It sounds like you can replace the battery yourself for $130 or so or have an authorized service place for it for $250. Could be worth looking into it as the laptop might last long enough that the battery starts to swell on you and destroy a perfectly good laptop.

I've limited the charging on it in the meanwhile. I might be blessed with a new MacBook for work if I decide to stop doing contracting and go full-time in a bit so I've been holding off servicing it. Though I probably should anyways would be stupid to ruin a laptop that'll be usable for at least another 5-10 years.

You could probably sell it for more if it has a new battery, or whoever you gift it to will appreciate the battery

Agreed. With my old M1, the 8GB of RAM became more of a limitation than the outright speed (though I also wouldn't mind a little more gaming horsepower).

Do you think Apple will ever make a G1 GPU that gets added to the higher end models as an option, or maybe even as an expansion card to a new Mac Pro? or just make the M series chip even bigger?

I would like to see full expansion cards be an option again, including video cards. I understand the M-series chips have integrated memory blah blah but I think they could figure it out if they really tried. Unfortunately they don't really seem to have the financial incentive to do so since their last few attempts at "pro" Macs sat in warehouses while minis couldn't be restocked fast enough, so I wouldn't be surprised if all we get is eGPU capability, if that.

Tempted, very tempted at a new Mac Mini, but the memory cost increases are putting me off.
The limits that I am now touching are memory (16GB) limits and not really processing limits. I'm happy for shit to run overnight.

Has anyone else seen or read about a rumour that 2 new chinese fab units are close to coming online, or was that a fever dream?

I’ve heard it, but they are apparently 10 years behind in terms of what they can produce, process-wise, so it’s unknown if they’ll have a significant impact on the market.

I think one of them may ultimately be owned by Hynix, but getting solid info out of China is hard work.
That’s what I heard too. But with the export restrictions and everything they’d still be limited to whatever they can scrape up that doesn’t violate the bans if they aren’t using homegrown tooling, which still puts them ten years behind the curve.

During Covid I went down a rabit hole of Watches. I learned a lot about supply chains.

Dont under estimate how companies can obfuscate manufacture origins.

For instance, for a watch to print legally, on it's dial, "Swiss Made" it has to be 60% swiss origin. That does not count where the gears and pinions were made, but where they were assembled. Not the cost, but the value.

Legal minefield.

M6 Mac mini is here, boys.

2 nm 12 core CPU (2 super/4 performance/6 efficiency) and 12 core GPU, and up to 170 GB/s memory bandwidth.

(Also the base price is now $899.)
Not actually shockingly bad specs unlike the majority of current Apple products, at least if it lives up to prior incarnations.

Lads. I just pulled my old iphone SE out of a drawer to get a phone number and after a quick charge this thing is STILL going strong. No lag, screen is great and bright and everything just werks™️

I dont know what magic apple is making their phones out of but this is incredible.

Their phones are no different than their computers.

I still have a Blue and White PowerMac G3 that runs like it was brand new.

CXMT is ramping up, but all that does is provide more capacity. As long as jewish finance capitalism is causing totally artificial demand financed by your pension plan, prices will not come down. Hell, even if someone Mangione'd Larry Ellison and Sam Altman, prices probably won't come down until the (Murican) AI crash.

Fucking retard.

Blame ZE JOOOOOOOOZ for a Chinese-Korean cartel.

Do you even know how to think?

The RAM cartel was price-fixing and strangling supply to keep prices high for decades even before that, you fucking jewsperging retard.
So your defence of Sam Altman stealing from all of us is 'demand doesn't exist, it's solely a supply problem'? Strange, I guess they all just decided to conspire in exact concert with the AI bubble, those sneaky conniving chinks. Holy fuck you are one stupid fucking lying piece of shit, you aren't even bothering to try and pretend to be sentient.

Are ZE JOOOOOOZ in the room with you right now, you spastic monkeyfucker?
