I doubt they were demoing it at all, I bet ubisoft just counted everyone with premium (or whatever name of that tier is) as "player" for theoretically having access to it, whether they actually play it or not.

Pretty sure that's why Tencent invested 1.16 billion EUR into the subsidiary and not Ubisoft proper.
