Assassin's Creed thread

A decent game, but a huge piece of wasted potential imo. Connor is not particularly fleshed out and the ball only starts rolling near the end. I felt that AC3 really needed the Ezio treatment and Connor should've been given more iterational games to explore his character further, but that would've been better served with a more detailed and longer-spanning exploration of the American Revolution. It felt rushed for a setting and the timeskips don't do it much justice.

Also, the combat was ass. Going from Revelations combat to AC3 felt like a dramatic step backwards.
This is one of the issue of post-trilogy Ass Creed, it jumps around everywhere so the characters never have time to develop beyond a single game, especially considering the handicap from the hammy French-Canadian writing.

For instance, why was Origins' era never explored further with Bayek? Republican Rome and Julius Caesar were literally just there waiting.

Did you read the comment I linked?

Do you know how expensive and time consuming it would be to recast, rewrite, rework a MAIN character in a massive game like AC: Shadows? That's not even getting into the marketing costs.

Remember how much it cost Ubisoft to release Skull & Bones because of three design chances over developments? (I'm taking the guy's word for it regarding development costs.)
I mentioned earlier that I agree that it's too late at this point to remove Yasuke completely, but they could:

- Reduce his exposure via marketing, making it primarily focused on Naoe. So far it basically feels like he's sucked the air out of the room, whereas she should be the focus of an Assassin's Creed game.
- Bifurcate the storyline like the Vahalla or Odyssey, where you pick a character and the other one essentially plays no real role in the storyline.
- Softlock Yasuke from killing villagers and remove the hip-hop music (which is stupid, couldn't they have done something interesting like a fusion Swahili-Japanese mix to represent his origins?)
- Fix the history, and present him more like a retainer rather than a samurai, even if he does 'become' a samurai in the end. (this was one of their largest marketing failures IMO, to deck him out in samurai armor in the marketing material, rather than to depict him gradually powering up throughout the story). I mean, even Netflix's Yasuke shows him wearing normal clothes in the majority of their marketing material:

I'm still excited for it but that's only because I've wanted Japan set game for a long time. Rise of the Ronin kinda stole its thunder as did Tsushima but I'm really only in it for Naoe and the historical figures. I miss the snarky codex entries.

Look at this horseshit.

People who meme on Kingdom Hearts being convoluted have no idea how bad it can get. On top of the games, Assassin's Creed has had its story spread over dozens of comics, about as many books, five short films, multiple board games and their expansion packs, occasional semi-historical museum exhibits, and a half dozen ARGs.

But to answer your question, in one of the comics it was Bayek's disloyal, cunt, sort-of wife who led the group that assassinated Caesar.

What is even the modern AssCreed lore? People mainly remember the original trilogy ancient aliens shit. The only other game I played, Black Flag, the plot was some Five Nights at Freddie shit with a corpo using your genetic memory for the alien mcguffins? It was mainly an excuse. I also kinda remember Ubisoft trying to do a gay shared universe of their franchises.

Too late and too woke to do it. Even if they were to do it, their "fans" would bitch harder than the dog pound and their workers would never accept the job.

Problem is that they have given them different playstyles with the game taking that into account. You are expected to be switching.

That requires effort. SJWs do not believe in actually representing cultures. Not when it takes effort.

We WAZ KANGS! SJWs do not believe in effort (see above) and they do not make characters that go through character arcs. They want to make gods whose only problem is that people do not recognise their divinity fast enough. Showing him weak will be seen as racism in the eyes of the woke.

You can take the horse to the river but you cannot make it drink. And, again, it is too late. Too much money and time was spent already. They spent too much time and money on other flops too and they have not a penny more to throw into the fire. What is is done is done, fix shit just enough to appease Japan (even a bit) and promise the next would be better (which means be better at hiding the wokeshit).

Ass Creed's secondary media sucks and I would happily Star Wars Legends-ize all of it.

I was really interested in seeing them do something with Juno as they built her up in the Desmond games and set up her returning in Black Flag and Syndicate. The whole Instrument/third party faction to play off that would really open up some cool stuff. I was so fucking mad when I heard that she wouldn't appear in any future games because they speedran her whole story in a comicbook and killed her off.

AC just wants to be an alternate history franchise and it feels as if they drag their feet having to include the "real world" lore to it.

Like really, what is it? Templars vs Creed going on thousands of years? Cool. What's the modern day story? "Uhh artifact! uhh power! that's why we deep dive into negroid japan!".

Shame seeing how far this fucking franchise has fallen, however much I like the simple gameplay of the more modern games, they suck as AC games.

I'm replaying the series (or as much of it as we can stand) with a friend currently. AC1 and 2 have these really good counter animations of breaking someone's leg chopping into their shoulder, stabbing a guy through a skull with a hidden blade. It really feels these give a really poor combat system some style and soul. I saw some footage of Mirage and it just looked like waving a weapon weakly in front of you while the enemy never reacted to it and their HP bar just slowly goes down.

I remember when I played AC1 I would run around some of the cities aggroing as many guards as possible to have these giant 20 man brawls in the middle of the city square, solely to see as many of the combat kill animations as I could. AC1 had a visceral brutality to it that none of the sequels ever really managed to match, and the piss-easy combat was at least satisfying as a power fantasy sort of thing.

There should have been an American Revolution French Revolution Napoleonic Wars trilogy with the last one having London, Paris (just recycle it) and Germany as the rural area. Or eschew the “one big map” thing for smaller open world areas (something I miss) to fit in a variety of theaters.

And Napoleon should have been the villain, obviously

I think they totally squandered the opportunity for Napoleon

Edit: Robespierre was a perfect villain for Ubisoft's disgusting Good Atheists vs Evil Deists thing, so Napoleon maybe wouldn't be a genuine Templar, but it could have been a Templar civil war (that was in Unity's plot anyways, wasn't it?) or even just a wildcard, maybe the third game would have been Templar and Assassin vs Napoleon.

While we're on the topic of older games; how's AC: Syndicate? Saw that it's going for pretty cheap right now on PSN - about $8.99 - but I haven't heard much good about it; main thing I've heard about it was that it tries to make Karl Marx into this sympathetic character. Another suggest picking it up?

EDIT: Might as well also ask; what do you guys think of Unity? Any thoughts on the overall story and setting? I know a lot of people praise the parkour and combat of the game; what do you guys think?

It's mediocre. It's got a Far Cry like style of revolving around repetitive base-clearing and what not, but without the smooth gameplay and creativity that makes something like Far Cry work. The villains are fictional characters (only the heroes are real); they probably wanted to use James Mayer de Rothschild as the villain but paled because "anti-Semitism." The depiction of London is anachronistic; they wanted to make Gangs of New York, basically, and they manage to miss all of the interesting quirky gangs that were interesting in real life.

The world itself is somewhat nice, but aside from the novelty of factories in an AC game and the river area (where boats float through, you jump from boat to boat) I think it was my least favorite city to explore. AC3 cities were probably worse in the sense of feeling lame and generic, but it just isn't a location that holds up to spending a lot of time in it like Paris or the Italian cities do.

The combat is Arkham style, which isn't inherently bad and could even feel fresh at this point (it having been a long time), but at the time people hated that. I thought they were greatly held back - as usual - by adherence to a formula. Moving into an age of revolvers, they should have worked that into it way more than they did.

Is that so bad? Karl Marx was not a Communist dictator. He was a historian/economist who wrote about the issues of his day. His place in the world more like a muckraker than a Lenin.

Well, I went ahead and picked up Unity again; so far, it's been a mixed bag. I'm torn on the gameplay side of things; combat feels alright, but I'm still trying to figure out what weapon class that I like. Parkour's a bit more negative, having the same general issue with Black Flag; that being that it's not always clear or consistent on what Arno can climb, and whether or not he's going to jump to the railing next to him or go flying off a building. Story-wise, I'm not entirely sold either; the French Revolution setting is frankly neat, but as @Ughubughughughughughghlug mentioned, Ubisoft's typical "deists bad, atheists good" shtick is making me hesitant on getting invested. The fact that I still hear certain people insisting the Reign of Terror is this "glorious Marxist/socialist uprising" is not helping.

So, I'm definitely torn on whether or not I'll bother with this game further. Haven't beaten it yet, but I don't know if I'll bother; I'm willing to overlook the story, but the gameplay is also mixed, so...

Speaking of Black Flag, I've been doing quite a bit more work on it. Fleet missions are going pretty well, especially since I've been relying on the exploit to capture Man-O-War ships a LOT earlier than I should've been able to; even got myself a level 60 Man-O-War doing that. Haven't made too much progress on the main story as of yet, I've been grinding out various rewards and gear from islands, such as Templar Hunts and Assassin Contracts, and they've been useful for getting a ton of supplies. My only issue is, again, the parkour; the crappy jumping has made me fail missions more than once, even lost a rather easy Assassin Contract because of it. Bit of a shame, since the rest of the game is pretty solid, aside from the tailing missions; I want to hope that Ubi manages to fix the game with the upcoming rumored remaster, but I'm not holding my breath.

Did you hear about that DEI Assassin's Creed Shadows leaks coming from Reddit? Ubisoft is going to add Seasonal Battle Passes to it. As for the leaks, Ubisoft is being Ubisoft as they're scrubbing down any leaks. Some images are saved, such as the Loading Room of the Animus Hub where you (unfortunately) play as Yasuke, and the Isu Coins logo (similar to the Helix Credits logo).

Beautiful. It's like pottery. They are doubling down and going full retard.

Just 100%'d Mirage. I fail to see how it's a return to "old AC". More environmental traps? Insta stealth kills? Rest felt pretty modern AC. Jerking off in a bush whistling instead of designing good patrol routes with natural traps along the way. When'd we last push someone over a balcony? And I remember in previous games seeing few chances to double-stab but holy shit it was nonstop in Mirage, yet you can't. Cause it's not a move in that game. Like, at least 4-5 chances to double stab in each combat area.

Anyway: Good game on a sale, think it was like $20? Now I just have to wait for Valhalla to go on sale to see how much more expansive that is cause Mirage really did feel smallscale and spin-off'ish at times.
