There’s the part two deniers, and then there’s the shippers.

But seriously, the shit after the timeskip wasn’t bad, but it didn’t really have the punch of the first part. And remember the three sacred words of Death Note: “Matsuda, you idiot”.
Part 2 was actually even more tense at times, but Light's opponents couldn't match L in likability in most people's opinions, plus it was basically a rehash of part 1 and brought very little new to the table. I think more people could have accepted Light's defeat if it was L who won.

I was just glad to get more Death Note and didn't really care too much about who won because we got a fun story out of it either way. In comparison, Attack on Titan didn't have a fun story anymore and actively ruined most of the characters in service of contrived twists and unearned emotional showdowns, so it's almost not worth watching aside from curiosity.

Another thing about Death Note Part 2 is that Light felt perfectly in character and consistent with who he was, but yeah the issue really with Part 2 really boiled down to Near and Mello not being as engaging characters as L. Otherwise if Near and Mello had that same amount of likeability it could've worked.

But AOT kinda fumbled in the timeskip by making Eren inconsistent since Isayama couldn't really dedicate himself to an Evil Eren and flip flopped with his motives.

Light cockily announcing his victory at the end was the one instance in which I feel he may have been a bit out of character. He was extremely careful up to that point, and to my memory the closest he ever came to behaving like that was rubbing in his victory to Misora's face. But she was already under the influence of the Death Note for certain based on her behavior so it was safe.

It's just a minor nagging thought I have whenever I see his victory proclamation I question if it fits.

Of course, compared to Eren it's literally nothing and is probably just me overanalyzing.

Well as I said before, I do think it's in character and that's really because Light at that point in Death Note felt like he was playing against people beneath him that weren't on the same level as L since in Part 1, L kept him cornered and Light is one of those characters that really has a big brain when he's cornered.

But anyway with AOT, yeah Eren just flip flops like the story can't decide between him doing the Rumbling because he didn't know but he had to, a psychotic nature he had since he was a child, some sense of patriotism to help out Paradis in the most fucked up way possible, or some retarded Lelouch plan.

At least with Naomi, I’ve heard a lot of that shit was in the sense of “there is no Light Yagami anymore. There is only Kira”. Like some sort of Jekyll and Hyde thing thanks to using the Death Note. Honestly, now I’m just sad that Titan shifters didn’t have some thing where they had a thing where they had to control some sense of bloodlust and desire for wanton violence.

I’ll give it that: Death Note knew what it was, what it wanted to be, and stuck to it. Can’t say the same for AOT.

Never forget, Light’s last stand.

Also, I loved how his demise played, though I think that him crying and whatnot in the manga was justified at that moment, didn’t try to make him too noble or with symbolism.

As for Eren, not really sure how you could have fixed it outside of the meltdown and dialogue.

The thing with Death Note isn't so much that Light lost. It's that he lost in a really contrived way, at least in the anime.

Iirc, Near had one of his subordinates follow Mikami, steal the Death Note, and replace it with an exact one-for-one copy that he made in under 24 hours that was so convincing it would fool Mikami who obsessively looked it over for any changes every night.

To be fair, I think the manga suggests that Near used the Death Note to make it so Mikami didn't realize the difference, which isn't mentioned in the anime.

Light still blew his cover in the end by getting way too cocky, though.

Outside of the terrible worldbuilding in the latter part of the series, and blatantly ignoring elephants in the room like Levi's constant fucking up, and Eren's psychotic behavior like you mentioned, AoT's biggest problem is its lack of commitment.

Its not like things didn't get extremely contrived once the authors writers pet and obvious dream girl insert Amane was introduced. The amount of bullshit with her flip flopping from extremely competent to laughably incompetent to suit the plot makes my head spin.

Well at least Light managed to get his dick wet with her, unlike Eren who decided to fucking murder everyone over not being able to sleep with Isayama's dream girl insert despite her canonically being incapable of saying no.

Simping and waifus are kind of stupid. At least Mikasa had better writing. Even if Misa had her moments:

Misa seemed like what would happen if a normal person got the Death Note. They'd make a lot of mistakes, but could also be competent with direction. Being surrounded by geniuses probably made her seem more stupid than she was meant to appear. I think her performance was believable and consistent enough.

Light only dated Misa to further his goals. Even before he had the Death Note he put his school work before everything. I think that girl he dated in the bus jacking episode said she was surprised he wanted a date because he said was waiting until after his exams. If he's going to put exams ahead of getting laid then he's definitely putting the enactment of his god complex ahead of it. Light did think Misa was cute and even blushed (only in the manga), but snapped himself out of being enticed by her.

Light is pretty much exactly like Eren in terms of putting their goals ahead of everything else, boning Misa just happened to further his agenda. I'm sure if plowing Mikasa aided in destroying the Titans then Eren have shown more interest in her early on.

Light absolutely hated Misa, and outside of that one panel you mentioned, and some moments during when he had his memory wiped, he either looks disgusted, infuriated, annoyed, or just completely disinterested whenever she tries to be romantic.

Hell, when she tackles him to the ground, he literally admits this the first time he's ever been provoked to hit a woman.
They might have fucked, but don't think for a second Light actually enjoyed any it.

Yeah, its really AoT's wish-washy nature that defines it. It couldn't stick to horror, it couldn't stick to shitty WWI-WWII analogue, it couldn't stick to time travel, it couldn't stick to supernatural, it couldn't stick to fucking anything.

AoT had no idea what it wanted to be and plot points were just driven by what Isayama wanted to write that particular month. Everything is basically author fiat, and I think that's where a lot of the problems of the series comes from. Its why shit just turns on a dime without any rhyme or reason. Nothing really makes any sense.

Even the ending, which was fucking hysterical and NOT what Isayama had intended (Don't believe that, he's full of shit. He had every intention of making Eren genocide the world and kill his friends). I mean, you only have to look at the last sections to see how much Eren is winning for him to just randomly fucking lose out of nowhere.

The problem is that its VERY clear that Isayama and/or his editors realized what sort of message a genocidal idiot winning would send, so at the (literal) very last second they turned around and basically author fiat make him lose. Don't get me wrong, I didn't WANT Eren to win, its just that the way it was written there wasn't any way he could lose. And in basically the last few chapters its a major reversal, yet again, from the direction the manga was going in.

People like to say ANYONE CAN DIE ITS SO HARDCORE, but that's honestly only true before the basement. Sasha dies because Isayama fucking hated her and wanted her dead, and Hanji bit the dust because he fucking HAD to kill off a character during the end. Other than that, shit stays pretty static.

The thing is its such a great horror idea, they basically go "And then we killed all the titans by luring them to the gate and smashing their heads with a log." Its a joke. AoT is a textbook example of how not to write something. I mean, the last leg of AoT entertained the fuck out of me because the entire final arc was just the manga ripping its own guts out. I've never seen a story suicide itself in a more hilarious manner. I mean, I think it basically blew its brains out when it insinuated Eren had a detailed plan and instead it was just revealed his plan was 'lol kill everyone'. I thought that was the dumbest fucking thing. You really didn't need to hide that plan for five fucking years or whatever. Nor is it an 'amazing' twist because its the fucking most obvious plan out there.

God, this manga is so fucking braindead its hysterical.

You know, I’m kind of surprised that Hanji never really tried to see what would happen if a Titan shifter and someone with the power of the Ackermans would have a child. I mean, given the time skip length, there’s enough time for Mikasa to go through a pregnancy.

You know, I’ve kind of forgotten how good the writing and English acting for Death Note really was (thanks for reminding me). Also, Lights voice and faces in those panels is amazing.

With AOT, that statement honestly pisses me off because all the characters who die in AOT are the characters who typically die in fictional stories (I.e. Parents, People only characterized as the "Best Friend" like Marco, and Veteran soldiers). The biggest proof of example of how the "anyone can die" claim AOT has is bullshit is the serumbowl for the sole fact that Eren's childhood best friend Armin should've been dead given he was literally charred to a crisp and fell many stories up in the air, yet somehow is still alive while Erwin who is a veteran soldier with a lot of death flags gets killed. Truly groundbreaking Isayama

I forgot about him wanting to hit her. It's a rare display of Light almost losing his cool, another that comes to mind is L revealing himself to him.

And I'm sure they fucked, but Light probably writes in the Death Note while Misa rides him, something like this comes to mind :story: :

Unrelated but those images remind me that Ryuk is such a damn good character, I like how they made him more human than Light. He gets overshadowed by the cat and mouse antics of Light and L, but he's just fun and amusing. They easily could have just relegated him to exposition alone, but they went above and beyond with him. I just wish he got a bit more screentime.

She seemed more interested in studying them for what they are than doing mad scientist stuff, I think. I'm more surprised the government didn't forcibly sttempt to breed an army of them now that you mention it though.

I lost any real interest in Death Note once Light decided to rub it in that guy he killed’s wife right before the Death Note took hold of her. Seemed unnecessarily cruel/dumb ego boost for him. Didn’t really want to see him outsmart and outmaneuver everyone past that point, though I did check out the ending once it happened(I think the manga did it better, but I’m kinda biased involving my feelings for Light.

Never got super into AoT, but the timeskip definitely felt more like an arc or two got completely skipped rather than a natural progression.

I'm not.

From what the series shows us, with the exception of Mikasa's dad, Kuchel, and I guess her, and Kenny's grandfather, every Ackerman is shown to be a stupid, insane, overpowered, violent yandere. The only one outside that isn't completely that is Kenny, and that's only because he's not a complete idiot like the other ones are.

Despite Paradis' government (and well, every government in AoT) being a complete shitshow, I fully understand why they didn't want more of them running around.

That's actually one of my favorite moments of his because it shows that no matter how much he tries to hide it, Light's just a piece of shit doing all this for fun.

I can understand that, and it is the best evidence that he’s just a shit. I just didn’t want to read an entire manga about the guy after that.

Light seems to have been corrupted by the Death Note, he initially had a lot of internal turmoil about even killing criminals. I remember him staggering down an alleyway vomiting and close to discarding it, and it really fucked with him, but once he decided to keep using it things went south pretty quickly.

I think they should have focused on that part of him more, instead it's like 1 page in a flashback.
