Stumbled upon another ebay find. At first I thought it was hats for like Kentucky Derby parties, but no, they are toilet paper covers. I never understood why they were a thing. Were people back then that afraid of toilet paper?

This brings me back to the early days of the craft malls back in the 90s. No one ever bought them, but ladies would put down a $75 monthly fee to rent a peg-board booth to sell these damn things.

Putting dolls in crochet dresses over random bathroom objects must have been a trend amongst old ladies back in the day. I remember one of my grandmothers having one that was specifically for covering those plastic air freshener tubes.

Found this pattern book for crochet flowers, the flowers look decent, but the woman on the cover the way she poses and how the flowers are just tacked on just looks bizarre and out of place

Is this magazine from early to mid 2000's? Look at her shirt and her pants, that is 00's fashion. In those years my sister used to buy magazines about crafts with beads. Not just bijouterie, any kind of shit with beads. She made a lot of earrings and brooches, but also coin purses and all that.
The thing is, those crafts were tacky as hell. I don't remember the name of the magazines and I don't have them. Otherwise, I'll definitely post them here.
I'm gonna ask my sister, she probably kept them.

I don't understand why seemingly every sewing blog and website is into using hideous, clashing prints for every project. It takes what would otherwise be a nicely made piece and sends it straight to tacky hell.

Tip: if you want your projects to look really nice and not "crafty", use prints sparingly, use more neutrals and try materials beyond basic woven cottons. Pricey fabrics are worth the money, too - you're still paying a lot less to have clothing made out of quality materials than you would at most stores that are a step or two up from gutter-tier fast fashion.

Me. I would. If someone gave me a pink cat for Christmas they had knitted or crocheted themselves, I would cherish it immensely.
i met an old lady who was spending her twilight years making little crochet elephants and cats for her church to sell during some market weekends. the yarn was big enough for her to be able to see while working with it, and didn't require as much dexterity to make into the animals as sewing did.

my supervisor had to pull me out once she started showing me the doilies.

tbh I blame Vera Bradley. That shit became ~trendy~ once that brand's tacky ass became popular.

It's popular? I thought it was for grandmas.

I also thought all this was pushback against minimalism but doing it wrong.

Ah, this takes me back decades. Something about seeing retro crap from when I was a kid always hits the feels. I can imagine my grandma making some of this shit, but she was heavily into cross stitching and painting ceramics rather than knitting. She wasn’t the best (still infinitely better than the skill level here), but she had a tremendous output due to her being a housewife and not leaving the house, ever. Ultimately even if these crafts are undeniably shitty, I’m glad a few younger people want to take up crafting. Except for the troons, they’re just (poorly) mimicking female arts to validate their fetish, fuck them.

I used to see those toilet paper cozy dolls all the time in second hand shops in the 80s and 90s. No one wanted them then either. I remember thinking they were just dolls when I was a kid. But my mom told me they were for toilet paper.

#plussizeupcycling has some gems

that's the thing about these crafts- theyre adorable if the person gifting them actually made them themselves, but they feel trashy and cheap when you buy them as a gift
