I was thinking about starting a thread called "Was Bob a good person?" in early September when Holdek started the Bob memorial page because I thought discussion would be more appropriate there than on a memorial thread. Of course I didn't do it, I thought it was a bit redundant.

Bob gets more sympathy because he did something with his life and at least tried to turn Chris into a functioning adult, although he failed at it or gave up. Sure, Bob wasn't a war hero or an engineer who revolutionized the plastics industry like Bill Riley said, but at least Bob aspired to be something in life. There's no doubt that Chris would have done well to imitate Bob's positive traits, when OPL got the worst traits of both of his parents. Bob, however, was flawed and you can see these flaws in OPL, such as threatening legal action over trifles.

It also helps to remember that Barb did not have as many opportunities as Bob to make something of herself. Whereas Bob went to college through the GI Bill, Barb had no such hope, what with coming from a lower-class agricultural/moonshine family (not to mention the dead dad). Moreover, the time and place in which she was raised discouraged women from becoming anything more than housewives. That secretary's position she held for thirty years was probably about as far as she could go without a college education. (At least as far as we know; if she did go to college, nothing has surfaced.)

The thing is, she didn't even become a housewife!

If Barb ever went to college it would have been for the MRS degree women of that era went to college for. She's never showed any evidence of being intellectually curious, but then again we don't know that much about her.

And of course Henry Bemis is right, it was seen as unfortunate for women to have more than a part-time job back then, like the man wasn't properly taking care of the family. Barb may have gone to a cheap secretarial school or learned her trade through OTJ training, which was the best she could have done.

I also assume women trying to match or exceed their husband's intellectual or scholarly prowess was discouraged during that time. I can understand Barb not going to college and being a secretary, but I don't understand why she wouldn't share Bob's enthusiasm for world cultures, travel and music. We know little about Barb, but we don't know if Barb showed any kind of intellectual curiosity in any academic subject, which makes Bob and Barb a truly odd couple with little in common.

No, I think that's a pretty good idea. Might just start one myself if I get sufficiently bored at work here.

To Barb: the mother of the year.
May you and Chris have great make-up spooning.

Bob gets a pass in my eye because he tried. He pushed Chrissy into school and went to great lengths to keep him there. He pushed Chrissy into completing his eduction at PVCC tried to set his last son onto the path to life.

But I feel in the end Chrissy was just too much for a 60+ year old man to deal with and in the end Bob just didn't have the juice left in him to fight he good fight.

According to RL sources Bob was a pleasant and quite gregarious person who lead a moderate interesting life upto the point he fucked Barb and ruined his life. :alog:

Happy Belated Birthday Snorlax. I hope you start gathering more shit.

All true, but I somehow suspect that even had Barb been given every opportunity possible to better herself, she still would have passed them all up.
