10-3! Cubs did it! They also traded for Michael Soroka.

The trade deadline so far has been pretty slow. And most of the guys traded left me with a reaction of "Who?"

I know who Soroka is mostly because he's Canadian.

But I would've never guessed he was pitching for the Nationals, even though I'm pretty sure I watched his start against the Jays way back in March.

When I saw the headline about the Cubs' trade, my first two guesses were that he either was still pitching for Atlanta or the White Sox.

The league is big and it's hard to keep track.

The Phils have acquired Twins hurler Jhoan Duran which makes this the first time the Bryce Harper-era Phils actually have a closer. I remember when they had to go to the World Series with a washed Craig Kimbrel as their heart-attack closer.

If you're not familiar, he was the Twins' hurler of a closer who throws 102 mph sinkers which actually move.

They had Carlos Estevez a bit last year, but if I recall he wasn't as good as he was historically. Johan Duran is probably my favorite closer to watch and I know the Dodgers were close to getting him so I'm glad because I may not like the Phillies but I like them more then the Dodgers lol.

Reactions: Tommy John Surgery
The Mariners traded for both Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez, and still have the probable MVP runner up on their team. If there was ever a time to make it to the playoffs again now would be the time. I wait with great excitement knowing they have the possibility to choke again, this time even worse. I sure do hope they don't miss it by 1-2 games again!

Holy fuck, they got Gene too? Guess I'm gonna be extra pissed this October when they miss the playoffs again.

Cleveland has traded Shane Bieber to the Blue Jays for pitching prospect Khal Stephen (he was Toronto's second round pick last summer.) Bieber's yet to pitch this season due to injury after getting Tommy John surgery.

Edit, another big trade is going down:

To San Diego:
  • reliever, Mason Miller
  • starter, JP Sears

To the Oakland-Sacramento-Las Vegas Athletics:
  • shortstop prospect, Leo De Vries (18 years old and a top 20 league prospect)
  • reliever, Eduarniel Nunez
  • a pair of AA pitching prospects

Khal Stephen was the darling of a lot of the amateur Toronto prospect huggers this season. Apparently Fangraphs listed him as #5 in a weak Jays system recently.

I think it's a decent gamble though I know little of Bieber and he sounds very risky to come back at all.

The Jays just got their heads beat in with 4 losses in a row coming into Baltimore after reaching #1 in the MLB briefly while finishing 14 games in 13 days.

The rotation is old & pretty mediocre - Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Max Scherzer, Eric Lauer. Not really anyone to win you a big game and no one opponents fear.

The Jays also have Alek Manoah coming back from TJS but he has also just started his minor league rehab & sounds like he's behind Bieber. And wasn't very good when he was last healthy.

Interesting move by their GM Ross Atkins in a year where the team really needs to be going for it.

I think it's a good trade for both teams. When healthy Bieber is a top of the rotation starter, and he has a $16 million player option which he may exercise. If he exercises it then this already makes their rotation look better for next season and he'd be cheap for what the could potentially be getting. Toronto's management tends to be pretty conservative (naturally as they were Cleveland's old management,) but this is a deal that I think was worth taking a risk for, especially as a lot of their better prospects are pitchers (who are also in the upper minors) anyway.

Stephen is a pretty good looking prospect and has done nothing but see his stock go up as the season has gone on. Apart from his last start for New Hampshire he really hasn't had a single poor start this season. He has a great frame, doesn't turn 23 until the winter, and has pretty good control. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being a upper-middle of the rotation type of guy in Cleveland as early as next season.

Especially considering that Eugenio Suarez is only a rental, so they traded for 2 months of his production. Would suck to trade away 3 prospects for nothing.

A good starter and a flamethrowing one inning wonder sounds like a steal unless they somehow traded away the next prospect to become DeGrom. I wonder if Miller's gonna be the setup guy, high-leverage fireman, or taking over the closer role from Suarez (doubtful) from this Padres pen.

Last postseason, we saw their bats freeze over in the Commiefornia heat when the Dodgers bullpen got them in a stranglehold. Offensive stagnation when it matters seems kind of a bigger problem for them but having some additional pitching depth is always good.

With the deadline having hit, so far the Padres look to have done the most to improve their team out of anyone who is eyeing October baseball. At least a few more deals will probably trickle in though.

In addition to the earlier mentioned trade with the A's for Miller and Sears, San Diego has also picked up Ramon Laureano and Ryan O'Hearn from Baltimore for six prospects who were ALL drafted last summer in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 12th, 15th, and 18th rounds.

San Diego also picked up a pretty nice backup catching option by getting Freddy Fermin from the Royals for a pair of Major League relievers (Stephen Kolek and Ryan Berget.)

Baltimore continued dumping by sending long time outfielder Cedric Mullins to the Mets for a trio of prospects.

Texas' rotation keeps getting better as they got Merrill Kelly from Arizona for a pair of pretty nice looking pitching prospects. They also grabbed lefty reliever Danny Coulombe from the Twins for a pitching prospect.

The Yankees did a really good job of improving their pen by getting Jake Bird from the Rockies for two prospects, and also got David Bednar from the Pirates for two catching prospects and an outfield prospect. Edit: they've also traded for Camilo Doval of the Giants.

The Mets also got a few good relievers. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley for 3 prospects. Time will tell but seems like they overpaid for Giants reliever Tyler Rogers, a rental who they gave up 2 more prospects for including Drew Gilbert one of the pieces from the Verlander trade a few seasons ago as well as Jose Butto. We'll see in a few years if this is another Pete Crow Armstrong situation or just another Jared Kelenic. With PCA's emergence as one of the best MLB players it's looking like the Mets rental of Javy Baez to end in a 3rd place playoff miss was one of the worst trades ever.
