Batman V Superman

They really did just throw like 4 separate DC Superman-focused comic events into one movie, didn't they?
Yeah, not to repeat myself like a fool, but it did kind of feel like binge watching a few episodes of a TV series rather than a movie.
But man, Batfleck cracks me up! I really love him, even if said love is not exactly unironic. At first I was afraid that after Christian Bale we wouldn't get another edgy-by-intention-but-goofy-as-fuck Batman, but thankfully that's not the case.

Now that I have seen this movie, I guess I'll offer my thoughts. Jesse Eisenberg was a horrible choice for Lex Luthor. Not only did the current look too young (isn't he like around Superman's age) but whatever Jesse was doing was like a teenager's horrible impression of Heath Ledger's Joker. I guess since past works I've seen Jesse in, he's like Michael Cera (dull, boring, no emotion) so maybe he was trying to add something in to this role.

When Batman is in Luthor's cell, was Lex basically saying Darkseid is coming or just other major DC villains will be revealing themselves. I know WB/DC wants to set up Darkseid for the Justice League movie (since Avengers: Infinity Wars will have Thanos) so chances they're work on that build with the Wonder Woman movie and any other DC Universe movie. Since the leak of Aquaman with the line, "Unite the Seven," it has been speculated the founding team would consist of seven members. From this movie, we have Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. Who will be the final member? Will it be another alien like Martian Manhunter or Hawkgirl to tie Darkseid towards them? Will it be one of the Green Lanterns (would they try Hal Jordan again after the GL movie with Ryan Reynolds)?

They are planning on making a Green Lantern Corp movie in 2020, so they might try something to make their new pick ready for a solo movie like they're doing to Cyborg. I think it would be cool to see Martian Manhunter, but that's my opinion.

Based on how DC movies have been going, I'm going to guess the Cyborg movie will involve the other Teen Titans being brutally killed off and Cyborg having extreme PTSD over being half-robot.

Oh, and the Titans actually were angsty bickering assholes or something.

I a have friend who will defend this movie to the death precisely because of that. Something about BvS being "one of the most comic accurate comic book films of all-time". Of course, that's a bullshit defense because 1) no it's not, 2) that isn't automatically a good thing because comic books are mostly pretty retarded.

It's a little heartbreaking to realize The Iron Giant is a better Superman movie than any actual Superman movie made in the past twenty years.

So it looks like BvS hype train has run it's course and the second weekend's box office take dropped 68%.

Still, even though it made just 32% of what it made last weekend, it still grossed another 52 million, and estimates that it has made around $683 million in the last two weeks. If this downward trends continues however, considering the estimates that it has cost $800 million to make and market this movie, they may just only break even.

Apparently, it's gotten a much warmer response on social media than it has amongst critics. A lot of comic fans on Facebook and Twitter loved this movie. Which is weird, because you'd think people who genuinely like Batman and Superman would be the most disappointed by a movie which goes out of its way to paint both characters as unsympathetic assholes.

Maybe they're just a bunch of blind fanboys who can't accept their answer to the MCU franchise shat the bed before it even got off the ground.

@Replicant Sasquatch Never underestimate fan wankery. "It's grim and joyless? It doesn't make any sense from a plot perspective? lol that doesn't matter, I get to see two big, burly comic book men wrestle for 10 minutes. That's good enough for me!"

Is there somewhere that can show exactly what the budget was spent on?

Seen this movie and I agree with the consensus that they are throwing waaaayyy too much shit into one movie. They would have been better off splitting this into multiple movies. Going into the background of how Superman became so distrusted and how Batman became fallen. They did try to hammer in how they have so much in common, but it felt forced with how they were jumping around from point a to point b to point c to point d. If they had focused from point a to point b and then filled in the rest with details and character development they could have had a more concise movie.

I'm not going to bother spoilering this, but considering how death is a revolving door I didn't feel anything when Superman died. Either it would have turned out he wasn't dead after all or he is gonna be brought back from the dead through the power of asspull. Death is never permanent when it comes to prominent characters. Instead of death they could have ended it with Superman disgraced and then have a sequel hook with Superman seeking to regain his honor and trust of the people.

With that said DC would be better off embracing a funner lighter side as opposed to copying what Marvel is doing. I'm not saying they should go the 1960's Batman goofy, but sometimes it is nice to see something on the lighter side. It is blatant they are trying to copy what Marvel is doing as opposed to doing their own thing. Dark and gritty does not always equal realistic, there is a darker side to life but at the same time there is hope and light. Not everyone needs to be made into a total asshole or have a dark past; there are people in real life with healthy relationships and state of mind. Furthermore, by copying Marvel and trying to outdo them on the dark and edgy, they run the risk of diving their franchise into "Ow the Edge" territory and making The Justice League be seen as just a clone of the Avengers.

With that said decent movie, just as long as you shut your brain off and don't think too much with what is going on. Watch with beer in hand. The first part was a major drag so you might want to just fast forward to when the fight scene starts when it comes out on DVD.

At the risk of sounding like a DC fanboy stirring things up, when have the MCU movies ever been "dark and edgy"? You could say The Incredible Hulk was given the direction Edward Norton wanted the character to go but it seems Marvel Studio heads want to distance that movie from the universe and treat it as the black sheep. The trailers for Iron Man 3 appeared to be going into the "dark and edgy" territory and even the first half of that movie looked that way but when the Mandarin was revealed, it pretty much unraveled everything. So much so, Marvel backtracked things with that short featuring the fake Mandarin. Once again, Avengers: Age of Ultron trailers initially showed the MCU dipping into serious route only to have the actual movie be completely different to what the trailers would have you believe. Captain America: The Winter Soldier could fall into the "dark and edgy" category mainly how government surveillance and security vs. freedom plays a part in it.

Honestly, DC is at a disadvantage for the ensemble cast route of storytelling. That's because the Justice League is headed by Batman and Superman, the two most overpowered characters in comics. Superman is overpowered because of his nature. He's basically a god. Batman is overpowered because the writers are always on his side. These two characters need to be the focus of their own movies because otherwise it's just a mess.

We might be watching different movies here because the MCU isn't "dark and edgy" by a long shot. The Defenders series like Daredevil and Jessica Jones certainly are, but the movies are solid Whedon-style action adventure. If anything, that was one of BvS's weaknesses: it was trying so hard to be mature and dark that it just came off as ridiculous. Like, it wasn't enough that Batman killed people. The movie just had to do it in the most patently un-Batman-like ways because Zack Snyder hates Batman and he hates people who like Batman even more. The guy thinks we're all total pussies for wanting superheroes to save people rather than just punish them.

Also I laugh at anyone who thinks Suicide Squad will be good. A whole movie where half the marketing is just them telling us "this Joker is going to be waaaaaaaaay edgier than Heath Ledger guys, just wait!" I think I'll pass.

I'm going to go see it at some point this week. Considering I prefer matinees, and the fact that the consensus seems to be that it's crappy, I'll be surprised if I'm not the only one in the theater.

I feel like such a stupid asshole for liking this movie.

It's got so much dumb shit, certain lines literally made me laugh out loud, the end fight was nauseating, I wanted to murder Jesse Eisenberg and it was just an overall narrative clusterfuck. But in spite of everything I somehow still didn't regret the 3 goddamn hours I spent watching it. Maybe I'm just a horrible fanboy or something, who knows.

I still don't understand Wonder Woman literally having a theme song like seriously what the fuck even was that?

Did they ever explain how? Or was it a "just roll with it" thing.
No, it happened in like a 2-second dream sequence so it was really just non-sequitur number 1,391.

If it's anything like the comics though, I guarantee they'll just say "lol speedforce" and be done with it. Assuming of course they bother with it at all.
