Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
All of the specialized armors are pretty crap, even as they've added more and more dangerous weapons, both to the person on the receiving end and the person using them.
The laser one is really funny if your local meta is over reliant on pulse lasers, but that's about it. If you're using specialized armor you're mostly abusing Ferro-lam

Heh, speaking of laser metas and armors, I once heard a funny story from a guy about him taking some autocannons into an MP match on that one moon in MW4 Mercs. Naturally, since everyone laserboated on that map due to the boosted heat dissipation, everyone ran with reflective armor... and then he shows up blasting away with ballistics, causing total carnage.

Luck blessed me today at my local game, I hit my opponents Locust with a 12 to hit and then rolled a head hit, not getting through armor but knocking the pilot out on a 3+ save. Then in the physical phase my Ostsol managed to kick a Dire Wolf's head off. Turned the entire game around because my Awesome was getting thrashed trying to hold that thing back.

I've been getting into Alpha Strike because it lets me play bigger, combined arms game but god I will always love classic BT because it lets you pull off Baller moves.

Absolutely blessed encounter. I love how games can just turn around after a good round. I have opposite luck effects with my Phoenix Hawk. My first game with him I tried a cheeky DFA but he got headshot by a single SRM rocket, failed his consciousness roll, smacked the ground, then could not wake up for like 3 rounds as he ate LRMs to death lol. My latest game with him he got his head blown off by two lucky headshots.

Alpha Strike seems cool. I've got two groups pretty close to me. One primarily plays Classic and the other primarily does Alpha Strike so I'm going to start learning Alpha Strike sometime soon. Good to hear it helps with combined arms because I'm going to start getting tanks and aerospace soon.

The short version is that Alpha Strike is so streamlined that you can do a lot more heavy lifting and all units follow the same format, just with a handful of universal special rules tacked on to differentiate themselves from each other. I can have a game with 1-2 lances of mechs, a platoon of manticores and squads of battle armor and it takes a few hours at most.

Yeah everyone says it is easier to run and faster. Plus more units would be baller. Like I said there's a group that focuses on it (while having some classic players as well). So I'll probably learn it from that group while still playing classic with another group.

Alpha Strike is for big epic battles with lots of units, without requiring you to start on Saturday and still book three days of paid leave to actually finish the match.

The Classic Battletech ruleset works much better for smaller fights, with the big upside being the granularity and randomness results in all sorts of silly shenanigans.

It all depends on what you want out of your game.

The only real reason I shit on alpha strike is because that Sarna goof who has never played CBT.

If time isn't a limit, I'd still rather CBT even in big games. But with a dedicated night and group we have no issues breaking things up. I'm pretty spoiled.

Looking forward to the ghost bears DLC for mw5, because like every game is now a beta until first few DLCs... Ghost bears kick ass I love the Kodiak, elementals will be fun. Also it's a nice homage to MW2 add on being Ghost bears (also I love the idea of the stealth Kodiak in intro movie). Time's almost up for that MWO event for a free mech... I just don't feel like playing lately.

The old BattleForce 1 and 2 games were great for larger battles. Not only could you fight entire regiments but it gave lighter units stuff to do besides try to get into a rear arc and/or die. This was especially true if you were playing double blind games so you had to send out recon units and then try to develop a picture of the battlefield so you knew were to commit your heavier units, place infantry and armor to begin the attrition process, try to take objectives that didn't simply involve grinding down the enemy, etc.

Honestly, BT breaks down at anything larger than company vs company simply because it isn't designed to be played at anything larger than that and has no business being played above that. Patton said that the essence of command is two echelons. You need to know the exact orders of the echelon above you and the general intent of two above you. Likewise, you need to know the location and exact conditions of the subordinates directly below you but only need to know the general information of two levels below you. As a company commander, you need to know exactly what your battalion commander has been ordered to do and where you fit into that, but just needs a generalized picture of what your regiment is doing and what they're up against. You need to know where your lance commanders are and the general conditions of each of their mechs, but you don't need to know that the Archer is down to 37 rounds of LRM ammo or that the Victor has one JJ out. That's the kind of granularity that ends up overwhelming commanders and dragging the game to a halt.

AS and the BattleForce games and even ClickyTech get rid of so much of that superfluous info that it makes being able to play larger games possible. That said, they shouldn't be seen as replacements so much as adjuncts to BT, something with a different bit of scale, just like BattleTroops was and the Succession Wars game were.

I know the CBT group has campaigns and stuff that they play when they can get all the campaign people on board, or will have side missions and stuff. I just want to get a better understanding and go through all my mechs before I commit to that, but SOON.

There's another group that mainly does Alpha Strike, so it's not like I even need to choose one or the other really. Got lucky with my location.

Ghost Bears are the only clanners I really fuck with, and the Kodiak is fucking sick. I meant to pick up MW5 when Mercenaries came out, but I'll just wait for a mega sale and get basically everything at some point.

I'll look up BattleForce sometime that sounds fun, and yeah that kind of stuff can drag the game down. I'm still new to Classic and was in a larger game with a bunch of heat efficient mechs so I had to weight pros and cons for one shot vs another which was a lot for me at the time. Factor in I slept horribly the night before and it was a mess but we powered through.

MW 2-3 Intros, aka piloting a Vulture sucks. Now I need to rewatch the intros. Edit: Upon rewatch, MW3 is still my favorite intro far and away.
To clarify: the smokey intro, fucking phenomenal.

I've kinda got a thing for the Star Adders because Absolom Truscott was Nicholas Kerensky's Nakama and so they were allowed to be the pragmatist clan based solely upon favoritism.

What, no love for Sigma Lead from the MechWarrior 4: Vengeance intro? Dude went down like a boss, but he was still in a Vulture.
