It really does, and the legal battle is less Macross vs. Battletech and it's more both vs. Harmony Gold, but I think the cases are technically separate and the Macross side will likely never go anywhere because the Japanese see American legal battles as too expensive to bother with. It's why you find very few Macross series brought to the US. Getting Macross Plus over was a pain, because Harmony Gold constantly sues, even though they technically are in the wrong.Battletech is in this weird place where it not only has an absolutely nifty in-game history, but even the history surrounding the game itself is really interesting.
George Lucas sued them for the use of the term "droids", GW gave them shit for the Warhammer (afaik) and then there's the whole legal battle with the inventors of Macross, Harmony Gold and all that Jazz.
Hell, even Robotech was originally envisioned as a Macross dub, but Macek was told he had to have enough episodes for syndication.
If I recalled, Kawamori said it was FASA bought the rights from a model company who told them they had the rights to license the designs. Or that was his understanding of it. He sounded like he'd be willing to talk it out with the Battletech guys, but can't because of active legal cases. Kawamori's a crazy person, but he doesn't sound like a ass.The legal battle of the Macross designs was just with Harmony Gold and it wasn't FASA's fault at all. There was a huge fuck up with the rights and HG are litigious as fuck. While FASA probably did unknowingly rip off some shit, the Macross stuff wasn't their fault as they thought they had paid for the rights to the designs.
