Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

Battletech is in this weird place where it not only has an absolutely nifty in-game history, but even the history surrounding the game itself is really interesting.

George Lucas sued them for the use of the term "droids", GW gave them shit for the Warhammer (afaik) and then there's the whole legal battle with the inventors of Macross, Harmony Gold and all that Jazz.
It really does, and the legal battle is less Macross vs. Battletech and it's more both vs. Harmony Gold, but I think the cases are technically separate and the Macross side will likely never go anywhere because the Japanese see American legal battles as too expensive to bother with. It's why you find very few Macross series brought to the US. Getting Macross Plus over was a pain, because Harmony Gold constantly sues, even though they technically are in the wrong.

Hell, even Robotech was originally envisioned as a Macross dub, but Macek was told he had to have enough episodes for syndication.

The legal battle of the Macross designs was just with Harmony Gold and it wasn't FASA's fault at all. There was a huge fuck up with the rights and HG are litigious as fuck. While FASA probably did unknowingly rip off some shit, the Macross stuff wasn't their fault as they thought they had paid for the rights to the designs.
If I recalled, Kawamori said it was FASA bought the rights from a model company who told them they had the rights to license the designs. Or that was his understanding of it. He sounded like he'd be willing to talk it out with the Battletech guys, but can't because of active legal cases. Kawamori's a crazy person, but he doesn't sound like a ass.

Harmony Gold does not possess the level of standing they think they do, their MO is to bully people into THINKING they have standing and PGI of all people called their bluff.

The reseen Warhammer as done by FlyingDebris is frankly on-point and much closer to the original Destroid Tomahawk than the first attempt at the reseen WHM (which frankly looked like ass). The FD Atlas was semi-affectionately nicknamed "Fatlas" in MWO, because it is rather chonky - I could see fiddling with it a bit (especially the absurdly large "codpiece" hip joint that alone has engendered Big Atlas Dick jokes) but it's mostly OK IMO and better than the MW4M Atlas (or the MW3 Pirate's Moon Atlas), at the very least. If I were going to tweak the FD Atlas I'd tweak the hip joint, maybe make the shoulder/arm assemblies a little less absurdly huge on top, try to make the head slightly less recessed-looking to bring it more in line with the classic 3025 TRO art and do a mild rework of the torso shape.

I like the nu-Reseen Marauder a bit (the non-MWO version and not that weird first try at the Reseen) but I'd work a bit with that AC/5 to make it so that there's actually enough of a fairing there to accommodate a proper ammo feed and handle the recoil of the weapon without snapping off and flying in a random direction - this is something I liked about the MWO Marauder, it makes the AC/5 housing a bit less silly-fragile looking and then the MWLL Marauder refines it a bit, gives it back the dorsal gun while ensuring it doesn't look as hilariously fragile and detached from the rest of the mech.

One of the things FD did really well with a lot of his redesigns was ensure that a given chassis could actually walk without clipping through itself or falling over. (MWO devs' rigging/animation abilities notwithstanding, obviously - the Nightstar, King Crab, Arctic Wolf, Nova Cat, Direwolf and a handful of others are all rigged poorly to various extents)

If any 'Mech deserves to have a codpiece and implications of extensive endowment, its the Atlas. After all, everyone knows the Steiners have to compensate for a lack of talent with sheer mass...

idk I always assumed that hip-fairing with that Deathgiver AC/20 was enough of a big dick analogue.

If anything, the AC20 should be placed properly. I'm thinking along the lines of this classic piece of media:

That reminds me, I need to try and play MWLL more, despite being a mostly dead game.
A couple of BPL streams of it caught my eye, and it'll satisfy the piloting stumpy robots itch until MW5 isn't just on Epic.

They keep pushing the Steam release date back despite likely not even being bound into exclusivity with EGS anymore. At a certain point it clearly is no longer about money, it's just PGI being fucking lazy and stupid control freaks

It's also about them being scared shitless of releasing a buggy/boring mess on Steam and getting torn to shreds for it on the user reviews.

As for MWLL, it gets a shot in the arm whenever a streamer decides to play it, but it never lasts because most people who would give MWLL a try have done so already.

Just look at the small laser looking like a cigar.

Never knew about MWLL until a couple of years ago. Shame its almost dead it looks fun.

Anyone get it running on a Linux build?

Can't say I've ever tried, but I imagine you'd at least be able to WINE it.

Just had a thought: are HESH rounds not a thing in Battletech? I can see rounds designed to cause spalling being devastating to mechs, basically the AC equivalent of tandem charge SRMs - a TAC on every shot. Spalled innards would utterly wreck myomer, ammo bins and god help the poor pilot who catches a HESH round to the HD location with all the stuff in the cockpit.

I have the game; I haven't played it much, but other than some weird hair colors, none of the alleged "tranny/SJW" stuff is very obvious. The game does have "straight white male characters".

According to Wikipedia, the lead director is Jordan Weisman and Mike McCain:

The lead producer is Mitch Gitelman

I'm not sure who that "Kiva" is, but I don't see that they're a "lead designer", as opposed to just some random low-level development flunky.

I think the legs are too large and the torso to thin.

What about the totally not a Victor

Technically, that would be just a variant of Armor-Piercing Autocannon ammo. BattleTech armor is bonkers, it literally just absorbs energy until it disintegrates/breaks off, so a "normal" HESH round would just pancake on the armor and instead of the energy pushing through the armor to flake of spalling on the other side, it would just make a shallow bowl-shaped crater on the surface. Another downside is that with how 'Mechs move and how they're shaped, there are often not a lot of flat, relatively perpendicular armor plates for a HESH round to do its best job with.

I actually like the Atlas III. It's clearly taking inspiration from the original while still doing its own thing. And I'm a sucker for those huge bulky legs and that specific artist's style.

Would it be racist to say they're a bunch of cheap Asian knockoffs?

EDIT: @Wasteland Ranger Its a design from the Space Germans. You seriously couldn't think of anything from an Arnold movie? Like oh, 'ITS NAHT A TUMAH!"
