Battletech - Also known as Trannytech

Im dropping HBS Battletech. The game is just not fun late game and i've just had it. Going back to MW4 Merc/Mechcommmander much better experience there.

The 331st works best as the ghost that haunts Nicky's Furry Brigade forever really
Plus elements from the 82nd Royal divison. The Wolverines were a mixture of 331st und 82nd divisons members / descendants

That's one of those little touches I really like about the SLDF, just how many noteworthy historical units got preserved as royals.
Indeed. When I read the SLDF FM I was suprised how many US units were still existing within the SLDF: the 101st Jump Infantry divison, the 82nd Royal Jump Infantry Divison etc

That's because the SLDF is the very, very distant descendant of NATO. The Terran Alliance would later become the Terran Hegemony following a military coup right out of Heinlein's Starship Troopers, and then with the formation of the Star League the Hegemony Armed Forces, which still proudly maintained their Terran origins, heritage, and traditions, would become the SLDF Royals.

McKenna's coup was actually genius. "Hey guys let's build Warships" "but we don't need them" "Trust me we need them. And you don't want to get on the bad side of the military right *hint hint*

What's really hilarious is that he was a Canadian who grew up in the wilds with no formal schooling until 12, and were he not recruited into the Alliance militia would have been just a lumberjack. Although, given his obvious talents, ambition, and distaste for authority, probably would have ended up taking total control of Earth's lumber trade by the time he was 30.

He might have ended as the most perverse lumberjack. The joke about McKenna, the senator and the donkey was only told in whispers because it was not a joke. Washington in the Terran Alliance time had a very debauched nightlife.

Can't be any worse than Canopus, and given the political situation in the Terran Alliance at the time good luck telling a Senator and a donkey apart.

What book has the most up-to-date rules on designing <echs? And how reliable is the Mech builder on http://remlab.sourceforge.net/remlab30/mech.lab ?

I had to give up on looking for a proper UAC20 scout and settled on using Dragonflys all through Luthien and Tukayyid. I wound up losing a bunch of veteran pilots because of it, including one of my original Mechwarrior team. The rest of my company did really well (18 Timber Wolves, 6 Dire Wolves; no pilots lost) but though we carried the day, roughly half of my poor Scouts got stompied.

Since I can't find a Mech that meets my needs in-game, I ran some numbers through that builder on Remlab. If it's accurate, it looks like a 55 ton Omnimech
  • with a 330 XL can have max FF armor, the same running speed as a Wasp, 180m of jump, full ECM/BAP, a UAC/20 with a couple tons of ammo, and have space left over for several CERLs of M or S size.
  • with a 385 XL can have max FF armor, better movement than a Wasp, and full ECM/BAP, but would be limited to a CERPPC and CERLs instead of a UAC/20.
I'd like to check these against the most current in-book system if I could.

(also, how does a merc company go about building their own Mechs, anyway? I know Wolf's Dragoons does it; is there a good book with rules for turning your own merc regiment into a self-sufficient outfit like the Dragoons?)

I would use Megamek Lab, from what I've seen all rules are currently updated for that.

Me personally I'm trying to get the rules for Protomechs, they seem neato.

Black Lanner. I forget if it was available in the Invasion era, but it's a 55 ton Omni with a 7/11 movement profile plus MASC. Since some variants use Heavy Lasers I'm thinking it might not be around yet.

Yeah, the Black Lanner was on my initial to-find list, but I never managed to salvage any. Same with the Goshawk, too. They both seemed like promising heavy scouts, and probably would have saved at least two of my pilots.

I toyed with the idea of using my spare Executioners as scouts, but their initiative was too low and they were too easy to hit, even when they were running (this was the HBS game, btw), and the Novas had way too much laser firepower and weren't really fast enough to justify using them over scout Mad Cats, so in the end I had to go back to the Dragonflys. *sigh*

The Stormcrow is going to be your 6/9/6 version, with the Black Lanner for 7/11 like TFT said. It's a half-ton under max armor, but that's because it gains 3 points and wastes 7. You'll have to yank some actuators off to fit the AC, but it's going to fit the bill.

For the record, this is still a stupid, stupid idea and I can't wait to see how poorly it goes for you.

I had a ton of Stormcrows (they were my biggest group of Omnimechs until I got my Mad Cat numbers up), but sadly, the mod I was using doesn't allow you to add jump jets to any Stormcrow variant.

And I don't see why it would be a stupid idea...! Again, I mostly need this Mech as a spotter for a line of Mad Cats and Dire Wolves that are bristling with CERPPCs and LRMs. It's gotta be fast and small enough to dodge, but robust enough to survive at least one round of getting lucky hits by Clan Assault mechs (all of my Dragonflys died within a move or two of being able to withdraw back to safety, usually surrounded by Executuoners and Gargoyles). The hypothetical UAC/20 is there as an extreme burst-damage weapon, to take the occasional shot of opportunity into the back armor of Assault Mechs; just enough firepower to penetrate rear armor and then run like hell (I actually don't really like UAC/20s on most mechs, since the range is too limited and the refire penalty prevents you from spamming it every turn. But those aren't really going to be problems for a jumpy Assault Scout that needs to spend half its time sprinting and hiding anyways).

I guess it'd be like a compact Heavy Striker/Scout hybrid, only used primarily as a Spotter rather than a Striker.

Not sure if this

Not sure if this would fit what you need but, why not use a swarm of combat vehicles as scouts such as a Warrior?

The Magistracy came after the formation of the Hegemony. they probably took some inspiration from the old Alliance. Though with the added "all is consensual and everyone gets paid decently" Though according to the FM:Periphery Canopus puts more importance on art then crudeness in their erotica.
