I like the format of Rubin's show. There aren't many long-format interviews where an actually interesting guest (the guy who organized the DHS under Bush was a very good guest, for instance) is allowed to clearly put their points of view. Adversarial interviews are important but there's also a space for actually listening to your guest. Rubin allows that. But as a commenter and contributor himself I've never seen him add anything. And worse, I saw part of his stage show where an articulate student from a Left Wing position stood up and challenged him on his views and he just went to pieces. Started saying crap about how she was probably too young to understand certain terms - blatant ad hominim the moment he realised he was on the back foot and whilst he might have had a supportive crowd who cheered him along, it was obvious to the girl (and to anyone watching on YouTube) that he was violating every noble thing he'd professed about reasoned debate and willingness to listen to his opponent.

I should probably dig it out - it was really dreadful and showed his true colours when he's actually challenged.

I agree with your initial sentiment: Form your own opinions. Don't be spoonfed. But the idea that Amazing Lucas, Crowder, et al are actually radicalizing anyone is laughable.

I think this is something that's been going on for a while. This hybridization of political commentary and entertainment which I like to call "The Colbert Effect", in my opinion really got big around the time Stewart and Colbert started doing their shows on Comedy Central. Mixing laughs with political points, allowing you to duck behind the "comedian" shield whenever you get criticized for getting the facts wrong, and keeping your audience's attention more through entertainment than genuinely insightful points. The funny thing is, I think Stewart actually is aware of the damage the brand of comedic commentary he helped popularize has done to the political conversation in this country, which is why he quit and practically dropped off the face of the Earth. When he does pop up, he looks like he's just sick and tired of it all. That being said, having Youtube commentators step in and start to siphon off the audience is slightly better, if only because there's going to be a broader range of opinions simply because of the lack of homogenizing corporate oversight.

Still, you're certainly right that unplugging for a while, so to speak, will do a soul good.

Apparently the "Facts" and "Logic" that Shapiro's company is now publishing are that swords are ten pounds and zero women have ever fought with them. Brilliant.

As for the 10 pound swords, he must be thinking about the big-ass claymores and the heavy duty two handers that can punch through a car door with ease. They had them, but it was often only the biggest or strongest guys thst used them, anybody else had the 'normal' 4-5 pound swords that wouldn't leave your arm tired swinging it around in battle.

Needless to say Ol' Benny-ben's not going to be waving around either of those beasts any time soon. He needs to do a bit more research before he looks like a dumbass.

Anything over 8 lbs would break a person's wrists. Even glorious, strong MALE wrists. Fencing isn't about brute force. Mary Read and Anne Bonny used to tear through half the pirates in the Caribbean with their titties out. Julie Aubergny beat a dozen men at once. Women used to run away from home, cross-dress and enter warfare all the time. But any "conservative" sounding bullshit will pass among the Daily Wire's audience.

Oh this thing. Yes - the Daily Wire are making total idiots of themselves on this one. The mealy-mouthed not really backtracking just made it worse. The guy was showing his ignorance of sword-fighting right off the bat when he talked about how women couldn't handle swords which were "5-10lbs". That's way over how much swords weigh. A one-handed sword is maybe 2lbs. Even a two-handed sword is probably around 3lbs. I have used a two-handed sword. They're not the hulking heavy things that they are sometimes portrayed as and that's a two-handed sword! Not only can some women wield a sword effectively, but most women have the strength to do so. The whole point of swords are to multiply your force.

Size, weight, strength are all large factors in unarmed combat. In swordplay, skill is a bigger factor than all of these. To the point that most HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) competitions are actually mixed gender in sword categories. Read that again - how many sports competitions actually have mixed sex categories (ignore the troons) that can you think of? The ignoramus picked one of the few categories where he's most wrong. Swords are a great equalizer if you know how to handle them.
