Better Call Saul

Looking back at Mr White and his high school chemistry life, I cant help but wonder how he went from being so smart and skilled that he built Gray Matter along with other two people to a chemistry teacher that hates his life.

At Elliot's birthday party, one of the members asks Walt at what University he is teaching and things get naturally awkward but it dead ass raises the question on just why Walt isnt teaching in some prestigious place that would at least pay enough for him to live at least a comfortable upper middle class life.

And I think the answer is obvious and right on our fronts, its his ego. Walt may complain that he is overqualified but the series never established that he attempted at getting a job at any university that appreciates his skills so we can make the assumption Walt legit never tried, even tho he will probably made up that he did and nobody took him in for whatever reason.
Given all we know about Walter White during and after BB came to an end, it legit would not surprise me that this man, being as egotistical and petty as he is, kept himself in a high school chemistry teacher position on purpose for the simple fact he loves being the smartest person in the room. He will complain the school and his students dont appreciate him but assuming there was a student that proved himself smarter than him, it wouldnt be beyond Mr Walt to legit fail that student on purpose out of spite.

If he was in an university, he would be teaching students that may be his intellectual equal if not surpass him altogether and this man's ego would not stand it so he will legit keep himself in a position that doesnt appreciate his qualifications while paying peanuts as long as he doesnt have to doubt that he is the smartest man in the room.

Shit like this makes me wonder if he just married Skyler because, unlike his previous girlfriend, she would never surpass him intellectually (which to be fair, Skyler is smarter than she looks, I do think she IS better at business than him at least) or in wealth (I do believe he loved her but like we nearly everything, he came first).

@The handsome tard solid theory, might also be because he was never scouted out and asked to join/found a company. The act of having to actually send in a resume or interview might have been seen as beneath him and so he settled for a crappy high school job because they were the only ones who begged him to come work for them.

I’ve worked with a bunch of Walt types: very smart but very egotistical and a pain in the ass to deal with. These guys often struggle beyond entry level STEM type jobs because of how awful they are to work with. They mostly end up as principal engineer or lead chemist type of positions.

I assumed whoever he worked with went the extra mile and blacklisted him for basically every prestigious work possible just to get the message across. It's clear that whatever happened in his old work wasn't just on him and he has legit grievances with the people there.

That is his Chicken Man outfit. I believe he has always worn a modest yellow shirt with a clip-on tie when he is at Los Pollos Hermanos. I could have sworn I remember a scene where he actually checks out of Los Pollos Hermanos and immediately changes from that outfit into his elegant mobster outfit.

I'm not sure if the yellow shirt is universal every time, but it's definitely part of the scheme, as well as a tie that is definitely less formal than those he wears in his criminal career.

He wants to look harmless in his job and does not dress ostentatiously.

An identical yellow shirt is visible in the background at the store when Jimmy starts buying his Saul wardrobe.

Juan Bolsa is clearly named after Johnny Sack from Sopranos. Like half of the scenes in BB are from Sopranos. Even the idea of the main character having cancer was taken from Sopranos. Vince Gilligan even had the cancer doctor, Dr. Kennedy from Sopranos, treat Walt in BB. You can name almost any scene from BB and find where they copied it from Sopranos.

Unless there is some fourth "amigo", it was just Walt, Gretch and Elliot that were spearheading the whole Gray Matter thing. Walt left because he couldnt stand Gretch and her family being more rich than him (and thus he wouldnt be the breadwinner) and he wanted something entirely for himself deep down. Gretch and Elliot seemed to have better shit to do than to blacklist Walt from any work opportunity (ironically thats something that Walt would probably do in THEIR situation) and they seem to be always open to accept Walt back if he gave them a call.

Oddly enough, Im sure that the whole "they blacklisted me" story is something Walt would tell others as to why he doesnt get a better paying job.

Mad Men was also a very popular show on AMC, but it didn't last as long. The Walking Dead was popular during the time the zombie craze was in a full cultural renaissance during the early-2010s. However, it's still on the air and it's getting worse and worse by 2014 onward that it should've ended by the third season.
Tried to rewatch Mad Men and turned it off halfway into the first episode. Same for TWD's premiere episode.

Just for the future, since your a new account, you can reply to everyone in one message rather than posting each individual reply.

For me the weird thing was how they were ready to throw a huge amount of money on him after hearing about his situation, not something you'd do unless you feel massive amount of guilt and/or know you'll be fucked if it gets out. It's not like the real world isn't filled with absolute dirtbags corpos that once they get a lot of money suddenly remember it's their goal to give it back (tax free of course).

Yeah but you are missing the whole point here. Gretch and Elliot, as far as we can tell, seem to be a rich but innocent couple who havent really wronged anyone that we know of. Everything "awful" they did was told to us by someone we know is an unreliable narrator. Everytime we meet them, they seem to be pretty kind and in "good terms" with Walt (or at least they think so). It all implies that they have been open for Walt to call them and want to work with them again, instead of cutting all contact. They did part ways in good terms (until Gray Matter took off and made billions while Walt's dumb ass watched with spiteful jealousy and made up a narrative that they "cut him out").

The funny thing is that believing they are doing this for image and "charity" is the reason why Walt refuses their money and offer to work at Gray Matter again and goes back at cooking meth again. Said moment is considered by many fans to be the "point of no return" as now Walt cant argue that he is still doing for the family.

Mad Men was the most overrated of the golden age television serial dramas. People liked it because Jon Hamm nailed the role and the setpieces looked authentic but they had to soft reboot the show every few episodes because Matthew Weiner, associated with some of the weakest episodes of The Sopranos, couldn’t write for shit.

I watched the first couple of episodes and got into it, and then Don's family shit came in and I just found myself losing interest, but kept going because I had bought the box set. And then it went up and down. I wanted to watch Don come up with new campaigns, pitch ideas to the other guys, work through the problems and shit. Which was the original plan, Betty and the kids were supposed to be minor background characters at best.

But that's a discussion for another thread if someone wants to start it.

The whole Brock situation makes you wonder a few things

1- Did Saul really not know that a kid would be poisoned? His scene trying to quit from Walter and him being held a gunpoint by Jesse do lean that he is telling the truth but it really makes me wonder what story Walt told him to make him go along with this but not know this would involve poisoning a child to the point of sending him to the hospital. Its possible Saul knew that Brock would be poisoned but Walt possibly lied and downplayed what kind of poison it was but the fact that Brock went to the hospital did mean to Saul that there was a chance this could have been fatal or left some life long consequence for the kid. The devil's in the details and Saul's line "But you never told me that the kid would end up in a hospital!" do imply Saul didnt expect Brock to be THAT affected, just enough to scare Jesse, and that was crossing the line.

2- Walt is def. lying when he says he knew how much to give Brock. When Walt came up with the plan, he was cornered and desperate so poisoning Brock was the "best" plan he came up with (worst case scenario, Jesse shot him and that would be a much faster and more merciful end compared to what Gus would do to him). He knew Brock was a kid so he kind made an estimation based on literally nothing that he had no allergies or genetic conditions that made even that amount fatal. It was entirely on luck that the kid didnt die and Walt knows it (when Jesse says that Brock will make a full recovery, Walt is legit relieved). Im very sure he would have felt bad somewhat if Brock died (he still wasnt in the point of whistling after a kid got shot) but would eventually justify it was necessary to kill Gus.

MM was at its best when it was about Don being the man wheeling and dealing. Once it got bogged down trying to moralize and remind you how bad white people where to blacks, jews, gays etc. it really loses steam.

They should make a new show called "Heull in a Cell", about the BB and Better Called Saul character Huell Babineaux's short lived career as an amateur wrestler.

It's set in Alberquerque in 1991,and features cameos from Chuck, Saul, Walt and even baby Jesse. Vince, contact me for details. This is a really really good idea.

Better Call Saul premiered a decade ago today.
