Hopefully some of you oldfags in the crowd remember Rob Manuel. He runs b3ta.com, which is kind of like Fark but for Britoids. It's been around forever and is still alive and kicking. Rob also collabed back in the day with Mr. Weebl (the Badger Badger Mushroom Mushroom guy) and Rathergood (the Spongemonkeys guy). You may recognize some of his Flash animations like "Hey Hey 16k" and "Spiderman Will Make You Gay" - again, incredibly, they're still online. In an era when quiz widgets were all the rage on Myspace and LiveJournal, Rob's contribution to the fad was "Female or Shemale".

In my mind I have given this guy fond commendation, simply because a lot of years have passed and he has avoided acting like a turbofaggot who deletes any content that's been deemed problematic post-facto. Not 100% of the time, but enough of the time.

Enough introduction - besides taking reader submissions on his own website, Rob also runs the social media accounts known as "Fesshole" and "Anon Opin". This is a simple gimmick in which anons fill a contact form with Things That Grind Their Gears! and once per hour, a script will pick one of these submissions and publish it. These get automatically crossposted to Twitter, Threads, Mastodon and yes, Bluesky!

What I offer you today is this innocuous, if not boomer-tier, anonymous take about social media personalities:

If you make a silly, niche social media account that somehow starts getting a large following, that doesn't mean you can suddenly pivot to giving your thoughts on world events or politics. People follow you for the silly niche thing and that's all they'll ever want from you.

The reception on Twitter was mixed, but reasonable. Ranging from "yes I agree" to "nah bruh" to pointing out the irony of this opinion having been published on... a silly, niche social media account.

Rob did not republish this fourth-wall-breaking drivel to the companion Anon-Opin accounts on Twitter or elsewhere. At least if he had done, you could fairly surmise that he actually meant his word. If I had to guess why something so banal is getting them frothing at the mouth, it's because these people make their shit politics the center of their life and identity. You know there seems to be a n odd form of disconnect with leftists. They seem to aspose the idea of “nuance” and yet they have a pure black and white view of the world. You see this in the media they make. How many times in the last 20 years have you seen a twist of the legendary hero revealed to be a horrible person who was racist or some shit. It’s because this is a form of faux deep or fake deep. Something that exists because the creator put in as a way to look deep without actually being deep. Actual depth in writing doesnt really on cheap subversive reveals it relies on the actual content of the story.
