Not really, reading between the lines in the book, Bob was rewarded for mediocre grades (Like when he 'earned' an SNES by getting his grades up temporarily) and was even bribed into going to the therapist instead of forced to go. I wonder if it's like Dobson where the parents decided to coddle rather than force Bob to make a change because it was easier.

I mean, his parents let him live with them until he was 31. There are plenty of people who need a roommate to help with rent, and Bob was working at the time, he easily could have left. Hell, he could move out now, $2700 a month is more than enough to get a place if you're sharing with someone. But he refuses to live with anyone, and his parents just indulged him. They didn't force him to save his money, they let him spend it as soon as he got it. He begged them for a better internet connection so he could spend all night after they went to bed on the computer, and they said sure, instead of realizing how unhealthy this is. Speaking of unhealthy, you do not let your teenage son get to that level of fat unless you're overindulging him.

Maybe Bob would still be the same old vicious moron had his parents forced him to stand on his own two feet, but I doubt their coddling helped.
