So Bobby's hypothesis as to why people are giving John Wick a pass for having similarities to capeshit is that...they don't like capeshit reviewers?

There's a simpler answer: the MCU is old, bloated, and tired, and more and more people are ready to move on at this point. Some movies might do okay, but I believe the era of "Marvel movie comes out, instant $1 billion box office" is over. General audiences are getting pickier, and as the quality continues to drop, just slapping a Marvel logo on something isn't a guarantee of success.

I saw John Wick 4 last night and had a hell of a good time despite John being put through injuries that should have killed him over and over. But I was willing to suspend my disbelief because of how entertaining the movie was, as well as that being kind of the point of the character: he's so damn hard to kill that he's something of a mythic figure in the movie's universe, and having him end up in the hospital for a chunk of the movie would detract from that experience. It doesn't hurt that it's rated R instead of the sanitized PG-13 of the MCU, so the violence could be brutal and effective throughout instead of two CGI dummies thwacking each other.

It's also a much smaller series than the MCU, and while they have plans to take it in other directions with spin-offs, it won't ever reach the levels of franchise bloat that Marvel has. A well-crafted action movie every couple of years is just right, compared to dozens of interchangeable capeshit flicks.

I would agrere, but also say that Robert's anger and bile around the MCU discourse has layers, like Onions and Shrek.

First there is the argument that people are sick and tired of the MCU and capeshit in general, which Robert counters that there is only 4-5 movies a year, and there is plenty other stuff to watch. But that is disenginious of course, what people are tired of is the discourse dominance the capeshit has, the whole zeigtgeist shit, when every single easter egg or backstage drama becomes news and topic for conversation.

Then there is the chuds issue. Robert can't help but being compeled to speak against any of the "wrong thinkers" that he conflates shit talking Marvel and their "progressive" actions as being a extreme right winger fanatic. So everything about the fucking Marvel movies become a political coin discussion, and that is catnip for Robert here.

Yes, people whining over every little shit Disney does being "woke" is annoying, but very much ignorable, but like I said, Robert can't help himself.

But I think the real issue here is that Robert is afraid capeshit will go away and leave the last vestige of relevancy he had with it. Robert's videos are in a really bad place now, since the start of the year he can't get more than 50K views, and only once he broke above the 40K, and this is a channel that at one point used to have a regular viewership over 200K but now struggles to break 20K. And the only videos that do "well" on Robert's channel, are the capeshit ones (and the occasional viral shit, like that Velma series)

Add that his patreon is a constant drip, and Robert is too proud to shill it, not to mention he outright stopped doing any sort of long form videos for over 3 years, the video essay scene has passed him by right now and I find hard to see him having the same hits he had with his Spiderman video if he ever comes back.

Outside of youtube there is nothing for Robert, he won't ever get a gig on a site ever again, since those are a dying breed as well, not to mention, he is too old, and with a well documented story of derranged twitter takes to be taken serously for a website that has to curate a rep. Robert doesn't colaborate with anyone, he doesn't go to podcasts or essentialy has any presence besides his twitter and YTchannel, which is most likely because of his rep.

The only thing Robert has besides that is the "writing" gig he has for Matpat, which he is very proud of being part of a million viewed video. Problem is, MatPat is probably paying him pennies and the job is to essencially wikipedia Marvel shit and cobble some crap theory about who is going to be in the MCU next, bringuing up some Z listers characters. Once the MCU, and capeshit is over, they won't have any need for Robert, besides some pity assigments.

Capeshit has been a integral part of Robert's "career" he was riding high on The Escapist hey days when it started, and it is the last thing Robert seems to be covering.

Robert doesn't do long format videos anymore, he doesn't do videos about videogames anymore, whenever he talks about any other type of movie, no one cares, he never cultivated a audience for that. his patreon is on a downsloap that brings him down, he can't muster the will to do anything besides his crappy bad green screen videos, and the realization that once the capeshit fad is gone, he will have nothing of note to offer...

Like you said, people aren't lauding alternatives to capeshit because they're snobs, they're just happy to have something other than capeshit to watch and talk about. As @Bolo_the_Second pointed out, when people say they're tired of the MCU, there's more to it than a "why don't you watch something else then?" reply can cover. It's the entire cultural conversation around capeshit that people want to move on from, whether it's chatting with your friends or coworkers or posting about them online.

Many people like to discuss what they've been watching and not just watch things for their own sake, so normies tend to stick to what's in and what's popular so they have common ground with those they talk to. But when you've had a trend that's been going nonstop for over a decade and only seems to be increasing in intensity, you're gonna get normie burnout. Disney implying that you need to watch four movies and a dozen TV shows every year in order to keep up with the Joneses is a harder and harder sell.

(Yes, we all know the dirty little secret of the MCU is that you don't actually have to watch everything to understand what's going on because the plots are so interchangeable that you can just turn your brain off and watch the pretty lights for a couple hours, but the implication is there. And no, Bob, just because you keep pointing this out doesn't mean you're somehow immune to the effects; in fact, it makes it sadder that you continue to care this much.)

Bob is also eager to continue blaming the coof for his precious MCU failing. While I'll admit that it certainly caused a big hiccup in audience viewing habits and likely had a sizable effect, it was not the sole reason it's faltering now. The reality is that nothing was going to stem the tides of the cultural zeitgeist shifting, and it was going to fade away sooner or later. The coof merely helped it happen sooner.
