Out of curiosity, since he hasn't posted much this month, I went to Bob's channel to count his views since it's almost the end of the month. Obviously these aren't exact numbers, but they're close enough. Sonic Revisted was his first video of the year, so I'm just manually counting the views I can see of those, not going into the vids to get accurate numbers because fuck giving Bob more views.

At the current moment, we have 10k, 16k, 6.2k, 5.9k, 2.2k, and 11k. Six videos in one month, not bad output, except for the fact that most of them are him reheating old shit. All up, this is his lowest month at 51,300 views. Most months he at least crosses six figures. His lowest month that I can see on Social Blade was last February and it was 116,942. Maybe he got another 50k views from people watching his old stuff, but looking at his daily views I don't think so.

It'll be interesting to see the actual final numbers come Saturday, but I don't think it'll be good for Bob.

Robert doesn't know the rules of money. What you earn depends on what you do, who you do it for, your ability to do it, and the ease of replacing you.

This is why a brain surgeon only earns six figures to a football players seven or eight. The brain surgeon can't be replaced easily, but only performs surgeries on people who need it. The football player is the center of a massive economy, consisting of stadiums (and vendors who set up in them), advertisers and their clients, sports paraphernalia, gambling websites, and more: their eight figures are simply their cut of the profits.

If you want lots of money, find a way to provide a service for other people, and do it better than anyone else. Or, provide an irreplaceable service for high-value clients. If you can't, or won't, do either, invest in a company that is, bearing in mind that your rewards will be proportionate to your investment size.

Shitting on MovieBob's Ideology Episode 1: Post-Scarcity.

This is something that comes up a lot with Bob, and I think its central to his worldview: the "Star Trek Future." Or more accurately "I watched a couple episodes of TNG and read the Wikipedia synopsis for a bunch of others and I want my reality to be like that." In Star Trek, humanity eliminates scarcity with replicators, allowing you to create virtually any mundane physical resources out of thing air. In Bob's mind, this is what makes the Star Trek future a perfect place, and what we'd have now if only we didn't have a bunch of dirty, smelly stupid genetic inferiors polluting our gene pool and slowing scientific progress... somehow? Apparently a redneck scowling at a picture of Kamala Harris is somehow going to deplete precious resources away from science.

Anyway, the concept of "post-scarcity" is much more complicated than Bob thinks it is, much like everything else ever. So I'm gonna try to nail down what he gets wrong about it here:

There's three ways a "Post-Scarcity" society can go. Star Trek, the ideal version, The Rat Utopia, the most cynical version, and something inbetween: Wall-E, what I find to be the most "realistic" version. Interestingly enough, in some small way, every single one of them is a mirror of our own current civilization. We actual live in the most comfortable and abundant time in human history, where there's more to go around for everyone than ever before, but we still have a lot of problems and, worse yet, we've developed many maladaptive behaviors in response to that abundance. The average person doesn't have to hunt or fight for food anymore, so the evolutionary instincts we have to hoard food and eat a lot make us fat when they would've kept us fed. We don't need to go out and hunt, but our bodies evolved to be constantly moving, so being sedentary can actually damage our bodies. Anxiety and depression helped our ancestors stay safe from predators and helped them get to sleep at night, but now it just weighs us down.

Star Trek presents an idealized future, but it's definitely not perfect. There are still schisms, power struggles, crime and selfishness in the Federation. It's a much better system full of people who are happier and pursue higher ideals, but that doesn't meant there aren't still greedy and lazy assholes too. Star Trek shows the ideal outcome of a society that has all of its physical needs met, where people pursue their passions or the betterment of makind. But being a "Post-Scarcity" society in and of itself didn't make it that way, it was the struggles and world-changing events that humanity survived and thrived through that made it good. Including managing to fight off an asshole who wanted to do Eugenics for "the superior future" and ended up in an exploding space ship for his troubles.

The Rat Utopia experiments (Behavioral Sink) are often cited by critics of "post-scarcity" as an example of what happens when society doesn't have any struggles. They put a bunch of rats in a makeshift city where they were taken care of constantly, and they all went absolutely fucking insane and killed each other. Now, the problem with this critique is that the "Utopia" they created wasn't a utopia at all. It was a goddamn prison. In prison, all of your physical and medical needs are met too, and it's still a fucking horrible experience only inflicted on the worst of society. Humans have many needs, emotional and social, not just physical. This goes for all living things. But if Bob became supreme leader of the world, this is closer to the society he'd end up making than Star Trek.

Finally, there's the Wall-E version. Everything is peaceful, robots take care of humans and they want for nothing. But they all become really fucking fat and lazy. So fucking fat that the climax of the movie is a human walking for the first time in generations. (Keep in mind its been a while since I watched it, so my recollection might be inaccurate) Humans became so fat and fucking useless that a giant computer has to babysit them all day, and tries to keep them from recolonizing earth because it (quite reasonably) believes that humans have become so soft, spongey, stupid and babyish that they couldn't survive a day by themselves anymore. The only reason humans break free of the AI is because they all get so fucking bored of being fat, lazy slobs they're desperate to actually fucking do something.

Wall-E, I think by far, is the most realistic outcome. I don't think humans would become insane if they had nothing to do. There are plenty of people right now who don't do shit and are taken care of, and they're not going crazy. They're like the humans in Wall-E: sedentary, bored, constantly engaged in entertainment and junk food, and often times end up depressed and wishing they had something better going on.

The bottom line is, having a "post-scarcity" society ultimately means nothing. You need to give people a motivation and a purpose for them to be happy, whether its religion, family, careers or passions. That's how you create a great society. Just feeding people infinite junk food and Netflix will leave them fat, bored, lazy and sad.
