That's why they need the (very poorly designed, implemented, and documented) attitude control system that was causing crashes.
Not at all, MCAS was a result of Boeing trying to sell the MAX to airlines with the promise of "you won't need to retrain your pilots! No sim time!" Without MCAS, there's a small region of flight where the stick feels a little different. Anyone trained on the 737 could reasonably quickly adapt to that with some sim time. If Boeing had just said "bro look I know the A320 is pretty good but look, you only need a couple of hours of sim time bro, bro come on bro" and bit the bullet, their stock would be higher than ever right now.
 
The whole coked up sales requirements to engineer it without a new type rating was insane. The whole kerfuffle is the FAA’s fault for allowing it to happen including the horrible idea of allowing the manufacturers to self certify and test.

Like every other gov agency it’s corrupt and this is an unfortunate example of how bad it is at every layer. The agency has shifted the blame fully to Boeing which is mind boggling.
 
F-22 was in dev for a long time because that was right at the tail end of the US's engineering capabilities totally falling apart, they could still kindof do stuff just very slowly so it was 'in the pipe' and being talked about for a long time before actually being put into service
The end of the cold war also kneecapped its development.

A shit load of US military procurement and development along with the majority of the defense contractors were killed by Clinton in 1994.
 
The F-22 was also continually upgraded from Day 1 although the numbers built are absolutely retarded. The USAF should have demanded a minimum of ~230 jets, so three wings of 72 jets combat coded and a few test and develop airframes. But no, they went full retard and said "ohh yes Congress 193 is just fine"
USAF originally wanted close to 800 F-22s to replace the F-15s almost on an one to one basis. But with the White House (Clinton, Dubya and Obama), Congress and especially Lockheed Martin being against the even the small production of F-22s, USAF was lucky just to get the 193 examples built for it.

The US Department of Justice is set to drop a criminal case against aircraft maker Boeing despite the fact that the company agreed to plead guilty last year, according to attorneys for families of victims of two fatal crashes of the 737 Max that led to the case.

The victims’ attorneys say they were notified by Justice Department officials Friday morning that it is looking at dropping the case and will instead reach a non-criminal settlement with the company. The new settlement will include an additional $444.5 million into a crash victims’ fund that would be divided evenly per crash victim.

The attorneys said the family members are outraged by the decision and that they will object to the decision in court.

“This is morally repugnant. It is a slap on the wrist. And it feels like a bribe,” said Sanjiv Singh, an attorney who represents 16 victims in the 2018 crash of a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max.

The Justice Department and Boeing declined to comment on the statement from the victims’ families.

The families’ attorneys said they were informed this morning that Boeing now no longer is agreeing to plead guilty, and would take its chances at a trial, and that is the reason that the Justice Department is considering no longer pursuing the criminal charges. But Robert Clifford, an attorney for families in the Ethiopian crash, said the is no “litigation risk” as now being claimed by the Justice Department, given the uncontested evidence against Boeing.

The Lion Air crash and a crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight in March 2019 killed a total of 346 people, and led to fraud charges against Boeing alleging that it deceived the Federal Aviation Administration during the initial certification process for the Max jets.

The decision to drop the case against Boeing is another sign that the Trump administration could go easier on prosecution of corporate misdeeds than had been the case under the Biden administration.

In the final days of the first Trump administration, Boeing agreed to a “deferred prosecution” settlement on the same charges that could have relieved it of ever facing criminal prosecution. But in January 2024, days before a three-year probationary period on that original agreement ended, a door plug blew out of the side of a 737 Max flown by Alaska Air.

While no one was killed in that incident, it opened the door for the Justice Department to again resume prosecution of the company.

Six months later, Boeing agreed to the guilty plea.

The original guilty plea reached in July included $487 million in fines — a fraction of the $24.8 billion that families of crash victims wanted the aircraft maker to pay. It also stipulated that Boeing would have to operate under the oversight of an independent monitor – a person to be chosen by the government – for a period of three years.

The victims families objected to that guilty plea, arguing it let the company off too lightly for its misdeeds. In December Reed O’Connor, the federal judge hearing the case, rejected the guilty plea, not because it was too lenient, or too harsh, but because he had problems with how the independent monitor would be selected.

“It is fair to say the government’s attempt to ensure compliance has failed,” O’Connor wrote in his opinion. “At this point, the public interest requires the court to step in. Marginalizing the court in the selection and monitoring of the independent monitor as the plea agreement does undermines public confidence in Boeing’s probation.”

The attorneys for the families cheered O’Connor’s decision in December to reject the plea, and they say they will turn to him again if the Justice Department moves to drop the criminal case against Boeing.

“You have all the facts you need to prosecute this case,” Clifford said in a statement. “These families are willing to take the risks that their government apparently is unwilling to take to hold these criminals responsible. We are offended by this deal, and we will challenge this.”

That is just fucking ridiculous. I'd like to see anyone defend the DoJ's actions, especially in light of Boeing pleading GUILTY already.

I bet it's because the Trump administration doesn't want a major strategic defense contractor to lose its footing right now, especially in the turbulent times we're in right now with multiple different possible war fronts that could flare up at anytime (my bets are on nothing ever happening though).

I don't think 'Inconvenience' is an acceptable reason to drop a fucking criminal case where 300 people died and the accused party has already fucking plead GUILTY.

So, this is ok, to let a corporation that killed 300 people off the hook for criminal liability, but it's okay for Trump to order his DoJ to pursue criminal charge against people he doesn't like without any good reason. If you believe this, please, shoot yourself in the head, because its obvious you are terminally brain damaged and have nothing more to contribute to society.

I’ve flown on Max aircraft when I’ve have had to recently, and I still feel iffy when flying on them.
I much rather prefer flying on Airbus newer or older aircraft, they’re usually quieter versus Boeing, and the bathrooms are quite a bit larger (especially the A220).
The Max 737's seem like they where thrown together on a short budget with not enough time to properly test it and make changes. I've only flown on 737's and Dash 8s and the older 737s feel much safer. From what I've heard the triple 7 is a decent plane but it is not a budget plane so they probably wouldn't cut as many corners on it.

A corporation cut corners and killed hundreds of people. How could the government do this?
 
Boeing is a year late on the new Air Force One contract with first delivery now pushed back to 2027. The US Government signed a 3.9 Billion Dollar contract with Boeing back in 2018. Cash upfront. Which means Boeing had to take any cost overruns. Which are now reportedly in excess of 2.5 Billion dollars.


FOR TWO FUCKING PLANES! Not even a new design! Just a modified 747! Where's the fucking money Lebowski?!
 
If all of Boeing's customers did cash upfront, Boeing would implode wouldn't it?
Its mind blowing. Cash upfront is supposed to be a sucker's contract. You are paying for something that isn't made yet. I bet Congress line itemed nearly 4 billion dollars to buy two planes as a pork barrel throw away to Boeing.

And yet they managed to fuck up a literal patronage kickback! How?! How can you be so incompetent as to turn a kickback into a 2.5 billion dollar loss?
