You use it as a vehicle to bring the desired food into your mouth. It's an edible eating utensil, sure. But that does not make it food any more than edible panties are.

well they're kind of bread, right?
so are they food or nah?

Nah. They are a vehicle for salt.
Or if you're a degenerate...

I think this argument only works when you have two pieces of bread with something inside. But what about toast and butter. I don't think that you're using the toast to get the butter to your mouth but rather using butter to make the toast (main food) yummy.

No, toast is simply an excuse to consume tasty melted butter. Kind of like popcorn.

I think bread is overrated, it's only purpose is for burgers and sandwiches. Of course, those things are great, but bread any other way is not very interesting. If you really want to soak up tasty sauce you have to go with white rice, more surface area for the sauce to adhere.

This doesn't apply to cornbread which serves a niche of being bread that's not good for sandwiches but actually worth eating by itself.

Step 1: Get a Baguette
Step 2: Cut Baguette by quarters
Step 3: Make hole using finger in the bread
Step 4: Pour flavored drink (Dr. Pepper if you ain't a faggot)
Step 5: Enjoy flavored drink bread

I guess you really do need an excuse to eat butter, taking a bite straight out of the stick might be socially unacceptable.

Is butter on crackers acceptable? Never seen anyone do it but it doesn't feel especially fat to do that.
