You can tell it wasn't staged because that slap had incredibly weak form. If it was fake, they would have made him appear more manly with an actual punch and not... whatever the hell that was. Also, he was really trying to not cry as tears welled in his eyes walking back. Couple that with the audio being cut out, and the japanese simulcast apparently not getting the memo, it was all real.

Those talks of taking away his Oscar is real fuckin' stupid, though. I'd respect them just a little more if they did whisk it away from him and gave it to say, Andrew Garfield instead for his performance in Tick, Tick Boom.

That's how you know its not scripted, because the network was worried about shit popping off and frozen the channel in case Will continued to throw hands or the two went at it.

If it was scripted there'd be no need to freeze the screen or mute the audio in case Will Smith shouted any slurs

I think he connected with his fingers and not the whole hand, the sound it makes sounds more like the cuff of his jacket touching Rock's mic. He also did the gay baby bunny rage hop as he threw it. If it was 100% scripted and planned why didn't they rehearse it in a way that didn't make Smith look like a faggot on lubed up rollerskates?

On one hand, Will Smith should have let it go because Chris Rock is a comedian and they were on stage in front of hundreds of people.

On the other hand, Chris Rock made an insensitive joke towards the wife of a fellow actor and alleged friend.

I think bygones should be bygones from a personal standpoint. Professionally, Will Smith should not be allowed at the Oscars ever again.

I felt these hosts discussed it well.

I mean, who knows, but it being staged makes a lot of sense:

1. Chris Rock never creates any space. Any normal man would either take a step back or put their hands in front of them. Something like "Whoa, hey man, just kidding!" is a very natural response. But instead he sits there and takes it. Strangest part to me.
2. Will Smith later wins best actor. First ever Oscar and it's for best actor. Okay. Such a deal would still be tempting for someone who has racked up nothing but Ls for over a decade.
3. People are finally talking about the Oscars. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
