There is a lowkey "Bavexit" movement in Bavaria, they want to secede from the Federal Republic of Germany and form their own nation.
Bavaria may be somewhat similar to California (with the exception of being largely conservative and not liberal/libertarian): Little raw materials, lots of light industry and agriculture, large tourism sector. Still, a secession could probably work, as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and some others show that even very small nations without raw materials can function. Maintaining power and water supply is a must, of course.(Switzerland, being an alpine country, has no problems in this respect, this is also true to a somewhat lesser extend for Bavaria.)

If California constructed a large number of new nuclear plants and added desalination facilities -- as was done for some time experimentally at San Onofre NPP -- they probably could achieve water and power independence. Tourism, entertainment industry and hightech industries could keep the cash flowing. Thus, a secession might work, theoretically. It would need years of planning, building new infrastructure and creating political bodies, though. Washington DC would need to be persuaded somehow to let them go (unless they want to start a second Civil War). I think it could be possible, but it would have to be a long-term project, not something you do overnight because you dislike the current central government.

Except everyone that isn't a Hollywood faggot from a mjor urban center is going to flip shit and declare their own independence from California the second they secede, taking all the agriculture and power plants with them. California doesn't want this ; LA and SF want it and they will starve on their own.

Ahhhh another transition of power, another bunch of buttmad losers threatening to secede from the Union.

Back is 2008, Texas was threatening rhetoric and stomping their feet. back then, I was much more in the Blue team than I am now (probably because I was still hanging around with college kids and still fostered naive notions that hope and optimism could change the world), and I distinctly remember watching a segment from MSNBC's Keith Olberman calling the Republicans dumbasses for the idea...

Some parts do differ, granted, but most of the notions remain the same...

So eight years later, people are still dumbasses- they're just wearing a different primary color.

So... to sum up my feelings if they did secede...

Let's see how well they do when the big earthquake comes and rocks their world.
They'll be begging Trump for financial aid. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and Trump will look down and whisper "No."
Their allies Cuba, Zimbabwe, ISIS and North Korea will provide.... Oh shit they'd be fucked.

A lot of whiny faggots are going to be super pissed when they find out this was all another /pol/ manipulation.

Yeah no, Calexit is about a thing as Texas secession was during 2012.

People are just pissy and it'll blow over in a week.

And in terms of California being its own country, bear in mind even thought its the state with the largest GDP, it relies heavily on the federal government (same thing with states like New York and Texas that have giant economies as well).

Basically what I'm saying is that this is just a post-election temper tantrum thats part of the natural process of beign pissed that your team didn't win.

Yep, this is nothing new. Remember 2004?

"Gosh! Now that Trump has won, how can we fight fascism and nationalism in the US?"

...

"SECCESSION!"

It's funny when you think about it, they're threatening to secede because the newly elected president has threatened to take all their workers-with-no-civil-rights-or-legal-status away. History repeats itself.

If they do secede, this should be their national anthem

It's not slavery if it keeps my i-phone and my laptop working, you damned fascist!

Not anymore. The Civil War decided that.

Texas v White decided it. In any case, unilateral secession is almost always "illegal", it's just a case of whether the motherland accepts it or is prepared to fight a war to stop it. If they let it go (or are forced to), it doesn't matter how 'illegal' it was because they no longer have legal jurisdiction.

California is going to have an uprising against the Southern States, it's going to be 'medicinal marijuana' advocates and edgy 3rd party voters led by Michael Moore's head in a jar.

Okay, thanks for the correction, in that case.

For anyone interested in reading up on it, it's kind of neat.

Our very own @LordKaT had a stream earlier, and there was a quick discussion on why we wouldn't allow California to secede even without the precedent of the Civil War: San Diego has a massive U.S. Naval Base. So even if California pulled it off, there's no FUCKING way they get San Diego.

Also, good luck getting by without the cheap hydroelectric power from up here in Washington, asshole! The Columbia owns your Starbucks drinking iPhone tapping asses!

I'm quoting this to whore karma.
