Call of Duty Thread - Potential return to form? Or nothing but cope on the horizon? You decide!

Wanted to ask; anyone fond of CoD: Ghosts? I admit, it's not my favorite, but I found Extinction to be fun, and the multiplayer was decent. Granted, those are my opinions; what do you guys think?
I liked the co-op and the squad mode. The 1 vs 1 with each player having their own AI squad based on the characters and loadout they've unlocked, that was pretty good. Being able to level up and unlock whatever weapon, attachment or perk you want without being restricted by the level progression, etc.
I would have liked to see Extinction come back but sadly nobody at Infinity Ward seem to give a shit and Raven is forced to work on Warzone anyway.

Yeah, Extinction was pretty solid; maybe not the best, but it was certainly something new, and I think that, if the devs actually kept it, refined it, maybe gave us a new story with it, it really could have been something good.

Instead, it got crowbarred into IW Zombies.

I do want to ask now, though; any CoD games on PS5 that you guys recommend? I was in the mood for a decent shooter; MWII and Vanguard both look like shit, though. Does the PS Store have anything?

Well, that's because best map High Rise puts all others to shame.

High Rise and Terminal are the only two MW2 maps I played I both remember and like. Though since I didn't play MW2 in its prime, I played the MW3 version of Terminal more.

I tried ghosts when it the iw6x client came out but didn't play it for more than a couple matches and kinda forgot about it.

Does Ps4 games via backwards compatibility count? If not the only modern Cod game I think is remotely decent in Black Ops Cold War. If PS4 games count, definitely get Black Ops 3.

Yep, PS4 games count! Very glad that the PS5 has backwards compatibility; makes it so much more convenient to find games.

I had BO3 a while back; I certainly had some fun with it, but the multiplayer was dominated by sweats. Granted, that's every CoD these days.

As for Zombies and the campaign; I think I would like to give them another shot, though I admit I did get burned out on Zombies for the most part. Still great fun, just dealing with burnout.

What does gamma correct mean?

In older 3D titles, lighting calculations are done in something called gamma space, which is basically perceived brightness. This is physically incorrect. The physically correct way to do it is to calculate luminance in a linear space, then convert the computed light intensities into gamma space. This is significantly more expensive, but it results in physically realistic lighting. The 360/PS3 gen is when we saw both types of lighting in games. COD4, MW2, and Killzone 2 are some examples of incorrect lighting. Gran Turismo 6, Black Ops 2, and Crysis 2 all had gamma-correct lighting.

campaign, multiplayer or zombies?
IW for campaign, enjoyed the fuck out of but depends if hard scifi is your thing
multi is probably full of sweats, no matter the game.
zombies IW again, it had it's own story and the first map is pretty solid. rest is hit or miss, but since it's season pass probably even more dead. if not limited to cod I can recommend zombie army 4 dead war.

MW 2019 is pretty good, somewhere between COD4 and Black Ops 1 in terms of feel.

I think I might be in the market for a World War 2 CoD right now, actually; I've played WW2, it was fairly solid, don't think I'll touch Vanguard though. The campaign alone is just... no.

Ever heard of a little series called Medal of Honor?
I wish Vince Zampella would bring back Medal of Honor. That way EA could alternate between MoH for the WW2 era and Battlefield for the modern/future settings.

Played Vanguard? (That title that starts you in D-Day) on the PS2. Shooters were clunky back then compared to now. Also played MoH: Warfighter. Horrible optimization and UI with an okay, if cliche story.

It's really nothing short of incredible how good games from the 360 era still look at high resolutions and maybe a bit of SweetFX.

  • If you plea after death, the squad that killed you cannot revive you. You have to rely on a separate squad to be benevolent and come pick you up, and that whoever killed your didn't decide to camp your body for more kills
  • Responding to a plea no longer adds them to your squad, and since most people are used to it working like that, you're likely to forgot to send an invite leading to one of the two parties just killing the other once the 30 seconds of truce is ended
  • If you kill too many players, including in self defense, the game siccs an AI squad after you to kill you
Wow, this is fucking stupid. Half the fun of DMZ was getting rolled by a squad, getting downed and asked then if you wanna join them, or responding to a plea from a player you just killed to help out with another fight. Also, there are a bunch of objectives that require you to kill other players, will AI still punish you for that?

As of I think tuesday, this retarded change was overturned. I have no fucking clue who thought it was a smart decision in the first place.

Yes, but they've since made it so you need to kill 2 3-man squads before the bots start hunting you. They aren't hard to kill, but if you're in the process of fighting someone else they can drain plates and they drop absolutely nothing of value.

I finally got around to playing the new MWII in online multiplayer and...it's fine, I guess. There are more cartoon-style operator skins than there were in 2019, which is annoying. The guns all have fake names, which is annoying. Some guns can only be unlocked by leveling up other, completely unrelated guns, which is really annoying. The maps are fine, I guess. In fact, they did a pretty good job with larger maps. Not everything is Nuketown-sized, but the bigger maps don't feel depopulated.

It's interesting to compare it to MW2 2009 and ways the game has changed, for better and worse. Besides just asset improvements, the biggest thing that's changed is how much better the spawns are. In 2022, I rarely spawn and get shot in the back 0.003 seconds later, while in 209, it's pretty easy to get trapped in some sort of cycle where you keep respawning with someone four steps behind you. Also, in comparison to the modern games, 2009 guns are absolute lasers. It's sort of jarring to go back to it from a modern game and get absolutely iced by the UMP 45 from across the map.

The sheer amount of shit that splashes all over your screen between matches is really annoying. I can't even begin to keep track of how much garbage gets unlocked from match to match any more. Attachments, XP tokens, skins...I don't even know. And half the junk requires purchasing the Battle Pass to actually access. I haven't played DMZ or Warzone...the only game like that I play is Marauders.

Allegedly the rights holders to those guns wanted Activision to pay more AND give them large royalties for the rights to the official names. Kind of agree with Activision in that they can go fuck themselves.

The idea behind the system is that you're unlocking similar receivers that can share multiple parts or are part of a themed family. Neat in concept, but annoying in execution. Also, completely dropped and forgotten as soon as the DLC guns were added, as none of them belong to any of these because you need to get 482 kills on enemies that were hit with a flashbang or some shit.

The funny thing is the process could be skipped by exfilling in DMZ with a locked gun and it will automatically unlock it for you.
