Call of Duty Thread - Potential return to form? Or nothing but cope on the horizon? You decide!

Idk, I haven't played any multiplayer COD since OG MW3 and I recently bought Cold War on sale for 20 bux and I've been having quite a lot of fun with it (altho the SMG meta is absolute cancer and recently I've been put into more and more sweaty matches with my average kd steadily declining)
There is several issues that plague modern day COD games:
1) Hacking is MUCH worse than in the olden days, and now it's so blatant that the cheaters are barely hiding it. Moreover, the engine was cracked by the hackers and they can pretty much do anything they want with it. Even older games than MW2019 are so compromised that playing them can be a hazard and can be used to brick your PC/Console or worse(BO3 notoriously had to have an update years later as there was an exploit found that could hijack your Steam account remotely)
2) The new game(MWIII) is already dead, there is barely anyone playing it. Every older COD, even niche ones like Ghosts or Advanced Warfare were populated for at least the year they were new, not anymore. This started with Vanguard, which came out after Cold War.
3) You being put into more and more sweaty lobbies is no coincidence, Activision has a patented SBMM system that makes every single match a sweatfest in order to force you to engage with the microtransaction store. This gets so bad in the recent releases that the matches are more or less predetermined at the start like a casino game. This killed the casual side of the community and now the remaining players are on the extreme sides of the spectrum: Either they're braindead and barely play the game(likely high out of their mind or only playing with one hand) or are the most try hard sweats you will ever see, there is rarely anybody inbetween
4) You weren't there when it happened, but Vanguard era updates broke Cold War and MW2019, so older games are now being ruined retroactively

Cold War is good NOW but it was hot garbage when it came out. Moreover, by the time it got GOOD it was already time to move over to MWII, which was garbage in it's own way and even more incomplete than usual(not just because it's second half of planned seasons were split into it's own 70$ DLC game but also because a lot of it's "new" content is just scrapped MW2019 content, which had a ton of stuff cut out of it for some reason).

If there is any nu-COD game one wants to buy, Cold War would be the best purchase as it has a ton of content, both from Multi and Zombies, as well as an actually decent campaign. Everything else afterwards is not even worth the hard drive space. You got lucky, if it wasn't for Activision's noncery Cold War could be considered an oldschool COD in some aspects.

I am still baffled at how kiwi and /v/ are treyarch fanboys and say Cold War was good.
It's not "good", it's simply the best of the newest mediocre crop of games. It IS a good time if you're a zombies fan, however:
*4 maps, all free
*Open world zombies
*Zombie survival mode on multiplayer maps
*Dead Ops Arcade
Combine that with the single player mode and you never have to play with anyone else to have a good time. It helps that the game isn't nearly as buggy, broken and incomplete as others of this generation, but again that's only after many, many updates over the years. At launch, it was no better than any other nu-COD game. Things were so bad that OG David Vonderhaar ran off in his Dodge Ram Superwagon out into the desert, "Desert Dave" if you will, during the game's lifecycle instead of fixing the game because that's how pointless trying to fix it was.

Now would be a good time to visit Cold War's campaign in preparation for BO6.

$30 for Black Ops 6's Vault Edition (coupled with my GP) is not a bad value proposition. But, the disk space it would hold up is way too much. At the least, I'd like to play the beta before impulse buying more video games.

All things considered, it's not bad itself.

I mean it really was good and I dare say it was even pretty good at launch. It was the first and last call of duty I really got into in years. I did try to get into MWII but I really only stuck with it for a month. I never bought MWIII nor vanguard and probably never will.

Old CODs were completely unplayable 2 years after launch. They managed to cripple BOII with a hack from the theater mode, which is part of why it's gone.
Is that why theater mode hasn't made a return since Black Ops 3? I remember hearing they did a purge of theater mode hacks recently. I don't know how verifiable that claim is.

I refuse to play Vanguard and MWII, MWIII out of principle.

I'm aware of SBMM, I was hoping that CW's current population wasn't enough for SBMM to actually kick in.

it's also very annoying that Tec-9 never got nerfed, so every match there is always at least one sweaty metagamer bro with a Tec-9 running around and it's just frustrating.

I'm still hopeful for BO6, but I'm not gonna buy it until a couple of weeks after release probably.

Why aren't the thermo grenades working? Was a nerf to their literal function that I don't know about?

Please understand, small indie game company working hard on making sure the in-game store is functioning and always has new bundles in stock. They can't be expected to make the actual GAME work!

You can buy the "upgrade" of the Vault Edition of Black Ops 6 for $30. Handy for Game Pass members. Still shows 300 GBs of it being massive.

I've been trying to play every COD game released on PS3. Beaten all of the Modern Warfares and moving onto COD 3 and World At War. I have a theory that these games and their grand scale and action are partly responsible for modern game budgets ballooning. You see, these games set permanent expectations in player's minds that ALL games should be grand to the extent that COD (at least the good ones) is. Which obviously can't be done, as there are few straight white men allowed to work in game dev without being harassed by DEI.

Out of all the Modern Warfares, 3 is the best imo. Most grand and chaotic. But they're all strong contenders for greatest game ever made, that everybody can agree on.

okay, whoa there: yeah, some of COD games have really good campaigns, but greatest game ever made is a bit of a reach imo, even when talking about the best COD campaigns, like Black Ops 1, 2 and CW
To be fair, having:
*Strong 5-6 hour Single Player(especially one with choices and alternative routes like BO2)
*One of the best and most active Multiplayer experiences of it's time that often lasted for years, unlike the nu-titles that last less than a year
*Zombies(nuff said)
*Likely some other fun little stuff like Survival, Dead Ops Arcade, Zork ect.
all in one box for the price of one game was a hell of a deal back in the day. I think you could group of some of the best COD games ever released together and throw them all as one entry on some "Best Game/FPS of all time" list easily.

Apparently theater mode is coming back back in BOGW (BO6 is a retarded name, Black Ops Gulf War is better) so be prepared to completely avoid it because of some old bug that can be exploited.

Texture streaming is the reason the game is always online. The size will be around 150gb. the 350gb estimate was a mistake, that is the estimate for having MW2 MP, MW2 Campaign, MW3 MP, MW3 Campaign, WZ, DMZ, MWZ all installed via COD HQ.

Texture streaming fucks my shit up on PS5, doesn't matter if I'm going wired or wireless. COD is the only game I ever have network issues with. I'm getting real close to saying fuck it and never playing COD again but the addiction is too strong.

Cheating in warzone is at an all time high right now. Even going into PS5 only matches isn't safe because a cheater can inject cheats into their perk packages on PC. These cheat injected perk packages gets saved to your COD account, and can be used on XB or PS. If you see someone running super fast this is how they do it. I don't remember what cheat service offers this nor do I care, I want all of these cheat providers removed in a scorched earth way.

At least on PC, size depends on whether you already have the base engine/CoD HQ installed (so basically if you already have one of the recent MWs), it's probably gonna be closer to 70 GBs like those games if you do.

I don't buy this as a reason, in the current CoDs texture streaming is optional/on-demand. Of course, if you have it on, you have a higher likelihood of textures failing to properly load in, and the game being nearly unplayable (at least in MWZ it amounted to shit like terrible textures, phasing through what looks like solid ground/walls, solid objects being invisible, and the map's visual geometry constantly moving around in areas). If this becomes compulsory in BO6, it very likely will be a point of contention once the game's out.

I liked the approach they took in MW2019. Base game had regular textures, "High res" textures were a dlc download. So everyone had to make the choice to download them and face the restricted storage.

Then during the BOCW era they made those packs completely useless which really pissed me off.

Texture streaming creates lag and dropped packets for me. Connection type doesn't make a difference, even different ISPs dont make a difference so it's gotta be something on Activisions end.

Speaking of packets I have now started to experience the dreaded packet burst randomly. The game was running like butter for months with sporadic issues but now? I can barely play any mode now and all I have is packet burst.

I thought maybe my pc was dying but I’m pretty sure last weeks patch fucked something. I tried every suggestion in the book and nothing has worked.
