Call of Duty Thread - Potential return to form? Or nothing but cope on the horizon? You decide!

Kinda sounds like a WW2 shooter isn’t for you then.

I mean, it’s a sub genre of shooters, right? It’s a game and the balance between realism and fun should lean towards fun, but... If you’re making a historical shooter, wtf is the point if you’re not making it... Historical?

(Sure, be a little more generous with the StG44’s or whatever, but at least make an attempt at using period accurate weapons. And people.)

It’s like making a Samurai game set in 17th century Japan and sticking white and black dudes in it. Or having helicopters in a Western game.
Silly thing to say. There's a sliding scale of realism, it's not it either has to be MilSim levels of realism or it can't be a game set during a certain war.

People might enjoy Red Orchestra 2 or Hell Let Loose for realism but may also enjoy playing a CoD game set during the same war for an arcade experience that really only shares the general themes of the conflict.

It's equivalent to saying if you enjoy Battlefield 1 over Verdun then WW1 shooters aren't for you.

I mean... Isn’t that what they always do?

I didn't hear word about Vanguard until...February or March?

It was definitely after Season 1 of Cold War started.

Though is it true that they killed off the Zakhaevs in a fucking Warzone cutscene or something? If that's true then it's completely retarded, I hate putting crucial story points in some shitty battle royale I'm never going to play.

It was in the Call of Duty Mobile comic. He was shot in the head. But then it turned out he somehow faked it and came back to life.

And then I was told CoD Mobile isn't part of the "shared universe" like the rest of the games even though it features old man Adler teaming up with Task Force 141?

Honestly, this shit has gotten MGS levels of convoluted and retarded so I'd just enjoy it as it comes.

The Judge Dredd bundle is out. Not really impressive, I would have prefered the costume from Karl Urban's movie. Dredd's watch is a reskin of anoher watch.

They probably figured the comic book look was more iconic, considering the Dredd film wasn't exactly a blockbuster.

I still question a Dredd tie in at all though. Like I said, I thought Dredd/2000 AD wasn't that popular outside the UK.

it's the same for rambo etc, it's about the nostalgia and name, not the actual content itself. half the people who would go "omg dredd so cool" probably don't even know who judge death is (and most likely are too young and/or normie to know of the game either).

It's to get the older demo to buy something I think. I don't care what my character is, I don't spend that much time jerking off about how cool my previewed loadout looks.

Now let me use a mace with the shield, a handgun or let me put spikes or a strobe or something dumb on the shield and we'll talk.

Has anybody tried the beta for Vanguard?
I've been going at it for the past couple of days, I'm hoping to unlock the BAR soon.

It's decent, basically Modern Warfare in WWII, but they need to make the guns and footsteps louder.

They also need to stop turning the guns into abominations with these attachments, but that's not gonna happen.

I also dislike how both teams feature the same characters, I've been killed so often because I hesitate.

I hope this is just a beta thing like Cold War and launch will have distinct factions, otherwise this will be a clusterfuck.

I haven't played it but it doesn't seem to be getting very good reception so far. From the footage I've seen it just looks boring as hell and all these games are seriously starting to just blend together into one gelatinous mass for me.

Unfortunately it's still probably gonna be DA BEST SELLING VIDEO GAME EVER!!!! this year thanks to the armies of consoomers and little kids out there who just mindlessly buy these games without question.

Cold War was more distinct because of its subtle art style and differentiation from Modern Warfare despite being the same engine.

Call of Duty NOW has to work around Warzone. There's no room for deviation. Vanguard proves it. How will World War II weaponry be balanced to work with Cold War and modern weaponry?

The exact same way Cold War weapons were balanced when they were added; not at all. The devs can't get you to buy as many skins for older guns that have been out for a long time, so make the new guns the only viable choice and re-start selling skins for an absurd price while ignoring people that say "X weapon is way too OP, there's no point using anything but it"

I think Cold War's color palette messed well with the direction Treyarch had taken after Black Ops 4.

Black Ops 4's color was over the top, over saturated, and vibrant. It wasn't a bad thing, in fact I think it worked well with a lot of their maps. I loved that Smuggler map with the wrecked ship.

I'm not sure how the WW2 era weapons are going to be integrated into Warzone, most of them are fine against each other but aside from a handful of semi / full auto rifles like the Garand, MP44, or FG42 these were large bolt action and sub machine guns. They're fine against each other, but in the context of these modern weapons it seems a bit odd.

I absolutely hate this as well.

COD WW2 got around this by only allowing the Allied side to change uniforms while the Axis had minor variations in uniform they were always German.

It's one of the things I liked about games like Battlefield 2. Each size wore a unique and authentic uniform from their country of origin.

Same here, also I've been killed several times because my character was taking 5 minutes just to throw a grenade. Somehow the flash/smoke grenade can be thrown fast but the lethal one is slow as hell and it looks like it falls right on your feet.
The lack of ping feature feels like they've gone backwards instead of building on what Treyarch did with Cold War.

Having played some more, I have some more thoughts on Vanguard.

- The gore system is a welcome return to the WAW days, and it makes the setting feel gritty.
- Each weapon that I've used has felt satisfying, particularly the MG-42. They sound a bit muffled though.
- With the exception of Eagle's Nest, I like the look and feel of the maps (Red Square reminds me of COD 2).
- Playing with subtitles makes the bottom of the UI very cluttered, they need to adjust that for launch.
- A lot of the attachments ruin the look of the guns, I'm going to forgo most of them to keep my sanity.
- The ability to choose how many players you want in a match is a good addition.
- Patrol is a nice game mode, I won't complain if it returns in future games.

Overall, I'm liking the game in spite of the muffled sounds and some strange art choices (mainly weapon customization and look of the soldiers, but I guess that sort of thing's here to stay in AAA gaming). As someone that thought WWII was alright, I think this is a solid improvement over that game, and I've got more faith in Sledgehammer offering a better functioning experience than I do with DICE (Battlefield V burned me badly, and I'm skeptical of 2042).

Bear in mind that I don't play COD religiously (certainly not for Cold War anyway), so I haven't experienced any burn out with the series lately. I've enjoyed Modern Warfare 2019 quite a bit, so more of that in WWII isn't a turn off for me like it is for others.

You caught my interest with the map comment.

How are the new maps? I didn’t think buy WW2 for multiple reasons but the maps really felt small, cluttered, and narrow.
