So, I was taking a look at MW23 again, and I think I know why the game just feels so crap to me; aside from the SBMM I think it's honestly the map design.
Let me explain; in previous CoDs, the map all tended to feel like actual parts of the world, you know? Ghosts's maps all felt like actual post-apocalyptic areas that people lived in, WWII's maps felt like WW2 battles, BO3's maps all fit well with the "simulation" story they were going with, BO4's maps all had distinct designs and themes to them, etc. Hell, even Vanguard's maps had some unique ideas, like Mayhem, which was set in a movie studio, or Beheaded, which was about dealing with the aftermath of a monster attack on New York. Basically, all the maps had a distinct "character" to them, with each of them having their own appeal and all feeling like part of the world they were a part of in some way. Every one of them felt unique, even when we had reused maps like Ghosts having two versions of "Dome"; it felt like they designed the world first with concepts in mind, then put the playable maps in them.
Then we get to MW23, and... there's only 2 maps out of the 65 in-game that actually feel memorable, and none of them really felt "fun". It feels like Activision made the most generic possible maps; yes, we got unique locations like Tokyo and Paris, but they just feel like random locations the devs put into the game, rather than actual parts of the game world. Every map feels like they have the same general layout with a different skin slapped over them, to say nothing of the actual multiple reskins they shoved into the game; everything just feels slap-dashed together, with nothing that really makes them appealing.
Basically, the maps feel too "video-gamey", with no real consistency or immersion to them.
Case in point: Grime, which is supposed to be set in London. There's nothing to the map that really comes across as a standout feature; it's just a random dockyard surrounded by buildings, with the same "three-lane" design most of the other maps use, not even any distinct landmarks in the area/background that make it feel like you're in London. Same thing with Tokyo, which aside from all the neon colors and some aesthetics, just feels like another CoD map. Hell, Bait has a restaurant with only one table and a dock house on the second/center level... with no way to reach the water and no door large enough to remove the boat inside.
It's especially bad with the Vortex maps, which were supposed to be more horror/apocalyptic-themed versions of other maps, but... they just don't hit. Airborne looks decent enough - like The Last of Us or something - but the other maps just feel dull; Das Gross looks like it was made for shock value, and Satan's Quarry... you guys made a map set in literal hell, but you couldn't put it anywhere else? Like a city, for a Doom or Metal: Hellsinger aesthetic, or something? Why a quarry?
Seriously, if you guys needed a horror map... why not Fog from Ghosts? Or make something that feels a bit more unique or fun; hell, I could imagine a remix of Vortex from the original MW3, like a tornado of souls.
Also... did we really need 6-7 versions of Shipment? I get that it's popular with CoD kiddies, but just one would've been enough on a 24/7 playlist.
It's a genuine shame, too, because I REALLY LIKE the weapon variety of MW23; we've got melee weapons like the spear or sledgehammer, launchers like the Stormender and bow, unique guns like the MORS, and the Conversion Kits make for some really interesting weapon variety. The gameplay feels fun - when it isn't getting fucked by the SBMM - but the complete lack of anywhere interesting or fun to actually play in kills it.
It's part of the reason why I'm of two minds on BO6, honestly; yes, it's a modern CoD with all the shit that it entails, but I'm genuinely curious on the actual gameplay, and some of the maps look genuinely more interesting than the entirety of MW23, frankly.
EDIT: Fixed a few things.
