Yeah, I blame the modern media (not like news and shit, but actual dictionary definition media) and it's constant glorification of hideous and outright fugly-ass shit as seen in putting fat girls in Victoria Secret ads and treating Taraji Henson like an icon of beauty, when she clearly looks like a racist anime drawing of Aunt Jemima. Young people love ugly, stupid bullshit and I'm tired of seeing 3's on my TV
Fortunately most of that trashiness of the 2000s is fading away in the mainstream. You still get stupid stuff like donks and excessive RGB lightning now though. Most of car culture has migrated to Youtube and other social media from what I've seen. I feel the retarded cable shows like Pimp My Ride don't really have much of an influence anymore.

I swear I cannot find a clean sports car in my area that hasn't been lowered, "tuned", wrapped, or modified. Everyone thinks their car looks awesome, and swear that all their shitty mods have doubled the value. The truck market is horrible for it too. Everything here is donked and it looks gay as shit
 
I'm not a car guy, but why do people put modifications on their cars to where their tires are slanted and/or the suspension is very low on the ground?


Hit a bump or incline and your bumper is scraping on the pavement. Plus, it looks ugly as hell.
funny as fuck. if i ever modded my suspension i would be adding a 4" lift kit to all my cars. air actually seems a great idea because my area has bad roads in some sections.
 
If I ever do suspension mods on a street car, I would do airbags on a cruiser, or some 50s gasser where the front is higher than the rear

I'd have to do something outright heretical but could only be identified as such by actual car guys. Like take a 75 Trans Am and put early 90s Formula 350 wheels on it, put in a super charged VQ37VHR and put in Mazda racing seats (in the same color as the interior) and the infotainment system from a QX and throw on Mustang fastback style louvers on the back window.

Everything about it would make the layperson say "Thats cool and its even faster than the original" while making every car guy's asshole itch with unidentifiable rage

Oh, and I'd change out the headlights to mid Jeep YJ square lights

What are you all's thoughts on the GMT400 Suburban/Tahoe and the GMT360 Trailblazers.

Thinking about buying another car in the next year or so, don't really care about mpgs or age. I just need something cheap that is reliable-ish and can be parked somewhere and not care if it gets scratched. Wanted a RWD boat, so my first thought was a Caprice or a Crown Vic, but in this used market they're both too expensive for what you get. Same with literally all pickup trucks.

So I narrowed it down to the 90s Suburban or 2000s Trailblazer, because they both seemed like a good value for what you get. Toyota anything is too expensive to be a beater unless its a complete rust bucket. Same with most Jeep models of the 90s/2000s that aren't total crap. Ford's equivalent to the Suburban/Trailblazer would be the Explorer/Expedition, but I had bad experience with the Explorer and none with the Expedition so not to keen to roll the dice there again.

Thoughts? Am I dumb? Should I hold off and just keep saving money?

Do you work on your own cars? If not, go Japanese. If you have your heart set on an old American SUV stay away from anything with cylinder shut-off, especially in that era. GM was bad for it in the 6L. Ford's variable valves on the 5.4 L 3 valve modular is a joke and will leave you stranded. You will never be disappointed if you spend more than you wanted to on a used car

E: The explorer from that era rides terrible in my opinion. I'd recommend a 4 runner or even the RAV4 or CR-V over the explorer or Mercury Mariner. I like the Tahoe it's not too bad

If you're considering the Crown Vic, check out the final gen Lincoln Town Car. Same as a Crown Vic but more plushy. Their prices are a bit cheaper depending on miles, but that particular modular V8 will last lifetimes if taken care of. I can find really clean Town Cars for ~5-8k depending on condition. If the prices are too high where you are, consider flying out to pickup the car somewhere else if you really want it. Used car market is still wonky, but I've been able to find some good deals on running project cars, typically old Germans since people are still afraid of working on them even though they're not any more difficult than any other marque.

Buy a newer Corvette or other actual mid-range sports car that never seems to be used for "sports" (sports here usually means shitting up the chassis configuration/handling, overtuning, and pushing 250hp per liter in the vain hope that nothing fails catastrophically while you're driving like a retard on public roads).

The biggest problem is there's not a ton of options. You will spend a minimum of $20k, but for that you can get a minty-mint C6 LS2 Z51 garage queen with all the options with like 50k miles and all the OE parts still in good shape because a 70 year old man drove it below the speed limit. Add 5 grand or so and you can get a newer LS3 one. It's possible to find a mint "Z07" C6 Z06 with low miles for around $30k, but the wacky engine is notorious for needing certain preventative things. However, the Z06 may as well be a supercar the way it's equipped.

You can get clean Z's in this range, but they're more susceptible to street modders. Something like the Nismo 370 has a better chance of being factory mint because it was optioned to begin with, and rare. Later model M3 cars are pretty sick, but expensive to fix and the entry cost is higher too, starts to get kind of stupid. Porsches of the mid-2000s have fallen into the $20k range but as much as I like them, it's not a particularly "sensible" choice for those with limited resources. Include the Dodge Viper here, the first generation can be had in the $20's, and they're all pretty much garage queens. It's a bizarro supercar though, and while the engine might be cheap to fix, I dunno about the rest of the parts. The GTS second generation is still kind of expensive and also subject to supercar tax.

If you want a "sports" car that's actually just a muscle car, the Camaro/Firebird LS1 cars can still be found as unmodified garage queens, for closer to $10k. Newer gen RS and SS Camaros, and I assume the ZL1, were unreasonably expensive when I looked. The Mustang sucks, I'm sure there's a few specials in the family that are good (Roush mods, Cobras) but it sucks.

Oh, and if you're gonna make a project/modified car, buy one that someone's already killed their wallet on powering up. It'll still be beat to shit, and you might need to buy new performance parts anyway, but you'll get $50 grand in parts/labor for about the same price you'd spend on a mint factory version. There is almost zero return on performance modifications, and just the parts cost thousands upon thousands before you get to labor.

I keep getting the temptation to buy someone else's project car, but I'm always worried it'll be a basket case. I looked at a German car someone gave up on a week ago. It was sitting in a field, and the wiring was a total mess. By the time I figured out which ones to jump to get it to start my battery went dead and I left out of frustration. I labeled the wires for the next schmuck.

I know I can fix something like that, and money isn't an issue, but I hate the idea of spending 100+ hours just to get something road worthy. This would have been patch welding, total brake job, nuke that wiring harness, tuning the engine, cleaning the gas tank, tires, etc.

Mid range grandpa sports cars look like the way to go. I really like the LS1 muscle cars, and I'm not afraid of German. Except BMW. Those are money holes.

I'd much rather deal with valve stem seal issues in the more modern BMW V8s like the N62 than touch any VAG V8. Older BMW V8 like the M62 is a Toyota in comparison. Timing chain in the front and everything logically placed in the engine bay. Very good motor. Just runs a bit hot from the factory with the oem thermostat.

Okay you got me on the Audi timing chain garbage. I think some of those are on the back of the engine, so you have to pull the engine to get to those crappy chain tensioners.

We should have never left cam in block behind. I'll take less revs for reliability any day
 
There's a whole subculture in the car modifying and tuning scene that aims to make as ridiculous as mods as possible. Ricing and stancing is one of them. People will put tacky visual mods like cheap side skirts and shitty spoilers, Altezza style headlight/taillight assemblies (now I guess it's all about the LED). For stance, people put on some cheapo coilovers and lower it as much as possible sometimes with ridiculous camber. If done right, they actually can look pretty good, but almost 90% of those kinds of mods result in no performance benefits.
The big thing now (That I can gather from the car shows I've taken my mustang to) is "sleeper cars." IE, buy some heap of junk car for a couple hundred bucks, then pump about six figures worth of shit under the hood and then slap some racing slick on it. Do all of that and go out hunting for supercars to beat.

But I'm not bothered, I'll happily keep torching ricers with what is essentially a stock mustang.

I'm a big fan of sleeper builds too. They're more involved and serious so the end result is usually something pretty cool that requires some creativity to accomplish.
 
Lately I've been using a late model Ford Taurus non-SHO for my measuring stick to see if a car is worth its salt. 6.7 second 0-60 low 15 1/4 mile naturally aspirated with regular gas. You can get a low mileage example for under $10k with full trim. They're super comfy and have as many features as any luxury car without turning anyone's head.

It's so uncool but I know deep down it sits at the top of that value bell curve, combining economy, performance, comfort and practically.

Everytime I go look at a car I have to ask if it's really better than a Ford Taurus, the ultimate modern sleeper.

Highway Star by Deep Purple and The Distance by Cake are obvious answers, Ventura Highway by America and Roundabout by Yes are great cruising choices and Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits and Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh are my personal favorites
